MLflow can make repeated Iris model-training runs traceable, preserve their metrics and artifacts, and give accepted models a versioned identity for controlled promotion. It does not, by itself, create a continuous-training service: you still need a trigger or orchestrator, reliable data handling, evaluation gates, approval rules, and a rollback plan.

What MLflow adds to an Iris training workflow

Think of MLflow as the experiment and model-lifecycle layer around your training code. A training run can record parameters, metrics, code information, and output artifacts, including a model. Those records make it easier to inspect how a candidate was produced and compare it with earlier runs. See MLflow Tracking.

When a run produces a model worth retaining, the Model Registry can give it a shared name and track versions and lineage. Versions can also carry aliases, tags, and descriptions to help identify their purpose and status. See the ML Model Registry.

In a scikit-learn workflow, MLflow documents autologging and model and environment capture. These features can reduce manual logging, but the training code still needs to define which data and acceptance criteria matter for your project. See the MLflow Scikit-learn Integration.

How the Iris example fits the workflow

MLflow’s official serving walkthrough uses an Iris classifier to demonstrate a sequence that trains and logs a model, promotes it, serves it, and makes predictions. It is a useful teaching pattern for connecting training records with a model lifecycle, not a turnkey production retraining service. The walkthrough does not establish universal data checks, evaluation thresholds, retraining triggers, or approval policies for your project. See MLflow Model Serving: Complete Example: Train to Production.

For your own Iris project, the important shift is to treat each execution as a candidate-producing run rather than assuming that every successful training job should replace the model in use.

Design the continuous-training flow

A practical flow separates candidate creation from promotion and deployment:

  1. Keep training code in source control. Define the training procedure and its dependencies so a run can be tied back to the code that produced it.
  2. Load an agreed data version. Decide how the data is selected and identified for each run. The example’s use of Iris data does not define a data-versioning policy for your application.
  3. Record a run. Log relevant parameters, metrics, code information, and the resulting model artifact with MLflow Tracking.
  4. Evaluate the candidate against explicit gates. Choose project-specific tests and thresholds before allowing a candidate to advance. A metric being logged is not, on its own, a promotion decision.
  5. Register qualifying models. Give accepted candidates a registered identity and retain their link to the training run.
  6. Promote and deploy deliberately. Apply your approval and environment policy, then configure inference to resolve the intended registered version or alias.
  7. Trigger later runs and handle failures. Use a scheduler or event-based mechanism to start retraining. Define how failed checks stop promotion and how to restore a previously approved model if deployment causes problems.

MLflow supplies tracking and registry building blocks; your team chooses the trigger mechanism, data policy, tests, gates, approvals, and rollback procedure. MLflow’s workflow guidance recommends moving training, inference, and infrastructure code through source control and CI environments, including for production retraining workflows. Choose where tracking and artifacts live

A local setup can be convenient while developing or learning the Iris example. A remote tracking server and shared artifact storage can make runs and models available to a team, but they also create operational responsibilities. Choose based on who needs access, where data and model files may reside, how you will back them up, and who will maintain the service. MLflow documents tracking-server and artifact-storage options in its Tracking guide.

For a self-managed MLflow server, registry UI and API access requires a database-backed backend store. Plan that configuration along with artifact storage, access permissions, and backup ownership rather than assuming a local development setup is already suitable for shared production use. The workflow requirements are described in Model Registry Workflows.

Make model selection explicit

Deployment policy should say exactly which registered model version or alias an inference service uses. An alias can represent a role such as the version selected for a particular environment, while an explicit version reference can make a deployment target unambiguous. Avoid relying on an undocumented assumption that the latest run, or latest version, is automatically the one to serve.

Keep the model’s registry identity and training-run lineage available to the people operating it. That makes it possible to inspect how a deployed candidate was created and to select a prior approved version when a rollback is needed. The registry supports versions, lineage, aliases, tags, and descriptions; the rules for assigning and changing them belong to your deployment process. See the ML Model Registry.

What MLflow does not decide for you

  • When retraining starts: provide a scheduler, event trigger, or other orchestration mechanism.
  • Which data a run uses: define data selection, versioning, and validation.
  • Whether a candidate is acceptable: set metrics, tests, and thresholds appropriate to the task.
  • Who can promote a model: establish automated and, where needed, human approval steps.
  • How production recovers: specify monitoring, rollback criteria, and the procedure for restoring a known-good version.

Without those policies, you have logged training runs and a model lifecycle—not a complete continuous-training system.
