There is no universal cheaper option: a home NAS can cost only a few dollars a month in incremental electricity if you already own it, while a continuously running cloud VM can cost much more once you include compute, storage, and networking. Compare the same 24/7 workload using your NAS’s measured power draw and electricity tariff, then price a specific VM and its extras.
How to compare the monthly cost fairly
Use an average month of 730 operating hours for both options. This is a calculation convention, not the exact number of hours in every calendar month. Keep one-time hardware purchases, recurring operating costs, and costs you would pay anyway separate.
- Home NAS: count the incremental electricity used by the NAS, encoder, and any additional equipment that the stream requires. If the NAS is already on for other purposes, its entire power draw is not necessarily an incremental streaming cost.
- Cloud VM: count compute for the full runtime, then add storage, network charges, backups, and any other services in your configuration. An hourly VM rate alone is not a complete cloud bill.
- Both: use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, uptime assumption, and stream workflow. Note purchase and replacement costs separately if you need new hardware.
Estimate the home NAS electricity cost
Calculate the cost from the power draw attributable to the streaming workload and your local price per kilowatt-hour:

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Measure power while the NAS and encoder are doing the intended job if possible. Idle wattage or a specification-sheet figure may not reflect continuous streaming. Include extra disks, cooling, or networking equipment only if streaming causes them to be powered or used when they otherwise would not be.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a 2025 U.S. residential average of 17.30¢/kWh in 2026. It also reported a 2025 state range from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii, so the national average is only a benchmark; use your own bill or tariff for a local estimate. Example using an explicitly assumed 30 W
At an assumed continuous incremental draw of 30 W and the 2025 U.S. average rate of $0.173/kWh: 0.030 kW × 730 hours = 21.9 kWh, and 21.9 × $0.173 = about $3.79 for the month. The 30 W is an illustration, not a published or measured NAS result. Substitute your measured draw and local rate.
Estimate the cloud VM cost
Choose a provider, region, machine type, operating system, and runtime before comparing prices. At 730 hours, Google Cloud’s displayed on-demand example for a c4-standard-2 VM at $0.096866 per hour works out to about $70.71 for compute: $0.096866 × 730. Google’s page identifies that as a region-specific pricing example and excludes disks and networking from the VM price table. The figure is therefore not a complete monthly bill or a universal VM price. Check the Google Cloud VM pricing page for the region and pricing model you would actually use.

- Check whether discounts or other pricing models apply to your planned runtime rather than assuming the on-demand example applies.
With YouTube ingest, your server sends an encoded contribution stream to YouTube; it does not necessarily send a separate copy to each viewer. YouTube handles viewer playback delivery. Still, confirm your cloud provider’s network terms for the actual configuration before estimating charges.
Do not mix a VM with managed live encoding
Google Cloud Live Stream API is a different architecture from a VM running encoding software. Google bills it by active channel time and input/output resolution, with a ten-minute minimum and durations rounded up to the nearest minute. Price the configured service separately if you use it; do not automatically add it to a VM-only estimate. Details are on the Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing page.

Use a scenario table, not a universal winner
The figures below are calculation examples, not matched quotes: the NAS illustration assumes 30 W and the 2025 U.S. average electricity rate; the cloud illustration uses Google Cloud’s cited hourly compute example for 730 hours. Their regions, included services, and assumptions differ.
| Option | Known monthly component | Not included in that figure |
|---|---|---|
| Existing home NAS, illustrative 30 W incremental draw | About $3.79 electricity at $0.173/kWh for 730 hours | New hardware, internet plan, UPS, cooling or network equipment not included in the watt assumption, and replacement or maintenance costs |
| Google Cloud c4-standard-2 on-demand example | About $70.71 compute for 730 hours at the page’s displayed $0.096866/hour rate | Disk, networking, backups, and other services; actual regional pricing and discounts may differ |
For a useful personal comparison, make low, expected, and high home-power cases from measured draw, then compare them with a cloud estimate for the exact VM, disk, and network configuration. If you need to buy a NAS or add an encoder, include that capital cost in your decision rather than treating the electricity line as the whole home-server cost.

Check the stream workload before choosing hardware
The encoder settings affect upload capacity and may change CPU load, hardware-acceleration needs, or managed-encoding fees. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select a quality your internet connection can sustain, and test with the expected audio and motion. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates guidance.
| H.264 example setting | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are encoder input rates, not estimates of viewer-delivery bandwidth. YouTube’s guide to going live describes encoder-based streaming with a YouTube stream URL and stream key. The encoder can be software on a computer or a standalone hardware device; hardware is optional if your NAS or VM can run the software workload.
What the monthly comparison leaves out
- Home reliability: power, home internet, router, NAS availability, and recovery from local outages affect whether a stream stays live. The electricity calculation does not price those risks.
- Cloud reliability and upkeep: a VM removes dependence on your home connection but still requires configuration and consideration of provider and service outages.
- Storage and media: account for the video files, playlist assets, and backups wherever they are kept. A disk line item should reflect the capacity and retention you actually need.
- Ownership costs: hardware purchase, replacement, UPS, and maintenance are not included in the illustrative NAS electricity total.
- Terms and rights: use content you have rights to stream and follow YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization policies. Continuous playback does not itself establish permission to use music or video.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a 24/7 YouTube loop without keeping a home NAS or computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-live service.
