Choose CloudWatch for AWS resource metrics, Grafana Cloud for hosted, multi-source observability and PromQL workflows, and PostHog when the metrics describe product usage or user behavior. They are not interchangeable dashboard products: first define what a metric represents, who needs to act on it, and what decision the dashboard should support. Then compare the ingestion path, operational workflow, integrations, and total cost for your actual workload.
What kind of custom metric are you trying to track?
The word “custom” can refer to very different data. A metric might describe CPU load or request latency for an AWS service, or it might count product sign-ups and feature use. Those jobs call for different backends and workflows.
- Infrastructure and resource health: Choose CloudWatch when the data primarily concerns AWS resources and you want AWS-native metric publishing, dashboards, and alarms.
- Observability across sources: Consider Grafana Cloud when you want a hosted layer for multiple telemetry sources and PromQL-based metric queries. It can collect CloudWatch metrics through a stream or a scrape.
- Product behavior: Consider PostHog when dashboards are for product usage, funnels, or user behavior. Treat it as a product analytics choice, not as an assumed substitute for an infrastructure-monitoring backend.
A metric’s audience matters too: an on-call engineer responding to a threshold breach needs a different workflow from a product team investigating a change in user behavior.
How do CloudWatch, Grafana Cloud, and PostHog differ?
| Backend | Best fit | Ingestion and query model | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon CloudWatch | AWS resource and application monitoring | Publish custom metrics through OpenTelemetry or PutMetricData; use CloudWatch metric, dashboard, and alarm capabilities. |
Classic metrics use a namespace, metric name, and dimensions, and exist in the AWS Region where created. AWS documents expiry after 15 months without new data. See CloudWatch metric concepts. |
| Grafana Cloud | Hosted observability across sources, including AWS | Collect CloudWatch metrics through Amazon Data Firehose metric streams or by scraping across regions and accounts; ingested metrics are stored in Prometheus format and queried with PromQL. | CloudWatch integration may add Grafana-side usage costs as well as AWS-side collection or API costs. See Grafana Cloud’s CloudWatch integration documentation. |
| PostHog | Product usage, funnels, and user behavior | Product analytics and insight workflows, rather than an assumed infrastructure-metrics pipeline. | Detailed infrastructure-monitoring parity, pricing, and specific operational capabilities are not established here. Verify them against the current PostHog documentation for your intended use. |
When is CloudWatch the right backend?
CloudWatch is the straightforward fit when custom metrics primarily describe AWS resources or applications and you want metrics, dashboards, and alarms within AWS. AWS documents both OpenTelemetry and classic metric paths for publishing custom data. Its monitoring service also covers logs and alarms alongside metrics. See the CloudWatch overview and dashboard documentation.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For classic metrics, the namespace, metric name, and dimensions identify a metric; dimensions therefore belong in the design, not as an afterthought. Metrics are regional. AWS says they expire after 15 months without new data, so confirm that the available history suits your reporting needs rather than assuming inactive metrics remain indefinitely.
CloudWatch dashboards can combine telemetry views, and AWS documents cross-account and cross-Region dashboard use. That can matter when teams organize resources across multiple accounts or regions. Check the dashboard documentation for the scope and setup relevant to your environment.

Can Grafana Cloud use CloudWatch metrics?
Yes. Grafana Cloud documents two collection approaches: CloudWatch metric streams delivered through Amazon Data Firehose, and scraping CloudWatch across regions and accounts. Grafana stores ingested CloudWatch metrics in Prometheus format, so teams can query them with PromQL and use Grafana’s tags and prebuilt dashboards for common AWS workloads. The right path depends on your AWS scope, permissions, and collection design; consult the integration guide before choosing.
This is a useful option when AWS metrics need to sit alongside data from other sources in a hosted observability layer. It is not automatically a cost-saving replacement for CloudWatch: a route through Grafana can involve AWS-side collection or API costs plus Grafana-side ingestion and other product usage.

When does PostHog belong in this comparison?
PostHog belongs when “custom metrics” means measures of product usage, funnels, or user behavior and the dashboard supports product decisions. That is a different job from monitoring infrastructure health or responding to operational threshold alarms.
The available PostHog documentation link establishes the product’s documentation entry point, but not enough detail to compare infrastructure-monitoring features, alerting, retention, or pricing directly with CloudWatch and Grafana Cloud. If you are considering PostHog for operational metrics, confirm the exact capabilities and plan limits in its current documentation rather than inferring parity from the fact that it has dashboards.

How should you compare alerting, integration, and ownership?
Make the workflow explicit before selecting a backend. Decide whether a metric should trigger an operational response or help explain product behavior. Then check how it is collected, who can access it, and where it is queried.
- Operational response: Establish whether the team needs threshold alarms and operational actions. Check the exact capabilities and plan for the selected service; do not assume an analytical dashboard provides the same workflow.
- AWS scope: For CloudWatch or a Grafana Cloud integration, map the AWS accounts and regions in scope, along with permissions and the chosen collection path.
- Data movement: Decide whether the data stays in an AWS-native workflow or is sent to a hosted multi-source observability service. Account for the operational responsibility and billing on both sides.
- Product analytics: For PostHog, verify that its current event, query, retention, and alerting capabilities match the product question and workflow you need.
- History and resolution: Specify the time range and resolution your team needs, then verify current service or plan limits. Do not infer retention from a general product description.
How do CloudWatch and Grafana Cloud charge for custom metrics?
Neither comparison can be reduced safely to a single headline price. CloudWatch identifies custom metrics, API requests, dashboards, and alarms as separate potential cost sources. AWS says custom metrics are metered when sent and prorated by the hour; pricing varies by region and the metric path. Review CloudWatch cost guidance and validate the current regional rates for your usage.

Grafana Cloud uses usage-based pricing, with separate meters for its products. Its pricing guide measures metrics per 1,000 billable series and lists distinct measures for visualization, logs, traces, profiles, and other offerings. The guide points to rate tables or account billing details rather than establishing one universal total. See Grafana Cloud pricing and usage.
For a CloudWatch-to-Grafana design, estimate both bills: AWS-side collection and requests, plus Grafana-side ingestion and any other products used. Compare the vendors only after modeling the same workload.
Quick Recap
Build a workload estimate before choosing
- Count the metric series: Estimate cardinality, including how dimensions or labels multiply series.
- Set sample frequency: Record how often each metric is emitted or collected.
- Choose history and resolution: Define the retention period and query detail the team actually needs, then verify current limits.
- Estimate activity: Include query and alert volume, API requests, dashboards, and the number of users.
- Include every product meter: For Grafana Cloud, account for the relevant products, not only metrics; for an AWS integration, include the AWS-side collection path too.
- Check current billing details: Validate regional prices, account-specific allowances, and plan terms directly with each vendor before committing.
A practical selection checklist
- Choose CloudWatch if the metrics are mainly about AWS resources and native AWS dashboards and alarms meet the team’s needs.
- Choose Grafana Cloud if you need a hosted multi-source observability layer, want PromQL workflows, and have validated the integration and combined costs.
- Choose PostHog if the metrics answer product-usage or user-behavior questions, after confirming its current capabilities suit your intended workflow.
- If more than one use case applies, keep the metric’s purpose clear rather than forcing infrastructure monitoring and product analytics into one comparison.
