No single social media management tool is better than Buffer for everyone. Whether another tool fits you better depends on four things: which networks and account types you publish to, how many accounts and brands you manage, how many people need access, and what the total monthly cost comes to at your account count. Buffer’s own positioning centers on straightforward scheduling and analytics, with billing based on connected accounts. Other tools in the category lean toward social listening, agency reporting, Instagram-first visual planning, approval workflows, or a shared inbox. The sections below explain how Buffer charges, how the alternatives are positioned, and how to run a comparison that reflects your own workload.

Plan details here reflect Buffer’s official pricing page as checked on 7 October 2026. Vendor pricing changes, so confirm current figures on each company’s plan page before you buy.

How Buffer charges: by channel, not by brand

Buffer’s pricing page defines its billing unit this way:

“A channel is one social account you connect to Buffer — a single Instagram profile, Facebook page, LinkedIn page, TikTok account, and so on.”

Channels drive the bill, not brands, clients or team size. A business with an Instagram profile, a Facebook page and a LinkedIn page uses three channels. An agency that manages ten client brands with two accounts each uses twenty channels. Count every connected account across every brand before you compare any plan.

The Free plan

According to Buffer’s pricing page, the Free plan includes three channels and 10 queued posts per channel. If you publish more than 10 posts per channel at a time, the Free plan will not hold them all in the queue, so check your posting schedule against that limit before relying on it.

Paid plans and the fair-use cap

Paid plans offer unlimited scheduling, subject to a fair-use cap of 5,000 posts per channel. That cap is a limit on the paid “unlimited” claim, not a per-month allowance you can count on exceeding. For most small and mid-sized accounts it will not be the constraint; for high-volume channels, read the cap as the ceiling Buffer states on its pricing page.

Single-user plans versus Team

Buffer’s plans distinguish single-user plans from Team, which the pricing page describes as allowing unlimited users. If several people will work in the tool, the seat structure matters as much as the channel count. Confirm which plan includes the collaboration features your team needs, because those features are not identical across plans.

Worked example: four accounts

Suppose a small brand publishes to an Instagram profile, a Facebook page, a LinkedIn page and a TikTok account, and two staff members need access. That is four channels. On the Free plan the four channels would fit within the three-channel allowance only after you remove one, so the Free plan does not cover that setup. A paid plan would be needed. Work out the monthly figure for four channels and the seat count from the live plan page, not from a comparison article.

Why price figures in comparison articles can conflict

Buffer’s own comparison article against Hootsuite, dated August 2026, gives two different starting prices for Buffer in different parts of the same page: one in the main text and another in the FAQ. Other Buffer comparison pages list a starting price as well. Buffer’s pricing page states that its prices were last updated in November 2025, so any figure older than that page’s current version may be stale.

Use the comparison articles to understand positioning. Use the live pricing page for the number itself, and multiply it out for your channel and seat count.

How the alternatives are positioned

The table below summarizes how each tool is described in the vendor and comparison sources reviewed. These are vendor descriptions, not independent test results, so use them as a shortlist. “Not stated” means the sources reviewed did not give that detail.

Tool How it is positioned in the sources reviewed What to confirm before buying
Hootsuite Broader functionality than Buffer. Buffer’s comparison suits it to larger marketing teams that need social listening, advertising, and competitive benchmarking. Feature and cost details on Hootsuite’s current plan page.
Sprout Social Social listening and customer engagement, with deep analytics and a built-in social CRM named as differentiators in Buffer’s comparison. Current product availability and which features each plan includes.
Later Instagram marketing and visual planning. Later’s own comparison describes Instagram and TikTok-first features. Whether networks beyond Instagram and TikTok are covered at the depth you need. Not stated in the sources reviewed.
Metricool A combination of analytics, planning, conversation management, and social advertising tools, with a free starting point, according to Metricool’s official page. Which of those tools the plan you choose includes.
Loomly Approval workflows, according to Buffer’s comparison. Pricing and approver seat limits. Not stated in the sources reviewed.
Sendible Agency and client management, with white-label reporting, according to Buffer’s comparison. Whether white-label reporting is included in the plan you pick.
Agorapulse A shared inbox, according to Buffer’s comparison. Seat and inbox limits on each plan. Not stated in the sources reviewed.

How to run the comparison yourself

  1. List every network and account type you publish to. Note whether each is a profile, a page, or another account type, since some tools handle these differently.
  2. Count channels across all brands and clients. On Buffer, each connected account is one channel.
  3. Decide whether posts need review before they publish. If they do, compare approval workflows, not only scheduling.
  4. Count seats: separate the people who draft and schedule from the people who approve and report.
  5. Rank the functions you cannot do without: calendar and queue, bulk scheduling, analytics and exports, inbox or listening, client reporting, and integrations.
  6. Price each shortlisted tool at your channel and seat count, using the live plan page. Note the date you checked.
  7. Test the workflow on the free tiers with real accounts before you pay. Buffer’s Free plan and Metricool’s free starting point both allow a trial of the core scheduling workflow.

Choosing by situation

  • One brand, a few accounts, one person posting: Buffer’s scheduling and analytics focus may be enough. Check whether the Free plan’s three channels and 10 queued posts per channel match your schedule before deciding.
  • Many client brands or agency reporting: Look at Sendible first, then confirm whether white-label reporting is in the plan you need. Price it against your total channel count, not a single brand.
  • Instagram-heavy visual planning: Later’s comparison describes Instagram and TikTok-first features. Test the calendar with your real content.
  • Listening, competitor benchmarking or customer engagement: Hootsuite and Sprout Social are both described as strong here. Verify which of these features the plan you need includes.
  • Approval-heavy teams: Loomly is described as built around approval workflows. Confirm approver seats and pricing directly.
  • Shared customer inbox: Agorapulse is described as a shared-inbox tool. Check inbox and seat limits on its plans.
  • Analytics plus planning and advertising in one place: Metricool describes that combination. Confirm which parts are on your plan.

Limits of this comparison

The positioning above comes from vendor pages and vendor-authored comparison articles, not from hands-on testing of each product. Feature availability, plan limits and pricing can change, and the sources reviewed do not establish which tools currently offer affiliate or referral programs. Treat each statement as a starting point for your own check.

The Bottom Line

Buffer is a sound choice when you want straightforward scheduling and analytics and your cost is driven mainly by how many accounts you connect. Look at another tool first if your main need is listening, agency reporting, approvals, a shared inbox, or Instagram-first visual planning. In every case, price the shortlist at your own channel and seat count from the live plan pages before you decide.
