The notable e-bikes of 2019 were not one interchangeable set of commuter bikes: the year’s lineup ranged from folding and cargo-friendly urban models to premium road bikes, off-road machines, and even a pedal-free concept. For everyday commuting, the RadRunner, Luna Fixed, iMiro Sivrac, Juiced CrossCurrent S2, and Specialized Turbo Vado 2.0 offer the most relevant comparison. Their prices and specifications below are historical 2019 figures, not current availability or shopping advice.

What “best e-bikes of 2019” means

New Atlas published its roundup on December 9, 2019, as a survey of bikes and concepts that stood out that year—not as the result of a controlled, head-to-head commuter test or a single ranked winner. Its selection spans different budgets, riding styles, and power levels. A machine suited to off-road riding or a premium road-bike build is not automatically a practical or legal daily commuter.

For a commute, compare the intended use and local e-bike classification alongside the motor, battery, cargo provisions, portability, and charging needs. Historical sticker prices cannot establish what a model costs now, whether it is available, or the condition of a used bike’s battery.

Commuter-relevant models at a glance

Model 2019 price reported Motor and battery reported Commuting angle
RadRunner $1,299 (New Atlas, 2019) 750-W hub motor; 672-Wh battery (New Atlas, 2019) Rear rack and modular add-ons; an urban utility focus
Luna Fixed $1,750 launch price (New Atlas, 2019) 400-W mid-drive (New Atlas, 2019); battery capacity not stated (New Atlas, 2019) Single-speed setup and carbon belt drive
iMiro Sivrac Starting at $1,299 (New Atlas, 2019) Battery capacity and motor output not stated (New Atlas, 2019) Folding format, integrated lights, removable battery
Juiced CrossCurrent S2 $1,799 (New Atlas, 2019) 52-V, 676-Wh battery (New Atlas, 2019); motor output not stated (New Atlas, 2019) Commuter utility and a long claimed pedal-assist range
Specialized Turbo Vado 2.0 $2,850 (Specialized, 2019 product page) 250-W nominal motor; 460-Wh removable battery (Specialized, 2019 product page) Commuter equipment, hydraulic disc brakes, and fender/rack mounts

The first four specifications and prices are reported in New Atlas’s 2019 roundup; the Specialized figures come from the manufacturer’s 2019 product page. The sources do not provide consistent comparable weights, service-network coverage, or battery figures for every model, so those cannot support a reliable ranking here.

Which 2019 e-bike fits a commute?

RadRunner: utility and modular carrying options

New Atlas characterized the RadRunner as a modular urban e-bike and reported a 750-W hub motor, 672-Wh battery, rear rack, and optional add-ons at a 2019 price of $1,299. The rack and accessory approach suits riders who value carrying flexibility. The 750-W figure also makes local classification especially important: motor-output limits and the legal categories for e-bikes differ by jurisdiction, so do not assume this configuration is permitted on every road or path.

Luna Fixed: a simpler single-speed drivetrain

The Luna Fixed was presented as a single-speed commuter with a carbon belt drive and a 400-W mid-drive; New Atlas reported a $1,750 launch price in 2019. That drivetrain profile may appeal to riders seeking a stripped-down setup, but the source does not establish a comparable battery capacity or range. Check whether the single gearing suits the hills and stop-and-go conditions on your route.

iMiro Sivrac: folding and last-mile convenience

New Atlas reported a starting price of $1,299 in 2019 for the folding Sivrac, highlighting integrated lights, a removable battery, and a claimed rapid-folding mechanism. Its appeal is storage and portability rather than a published performance comparison: the roundup does not state a battery capacity, motor output, or standardized folded dimensions. Confirm those details and the practical folded size before relying on it for a train connection or small storage space.

Juiced CrossCurrent S2: a range claim to treat cautiously

New Atlas reported the CrossCurrent S2 at $1,799 in 2019, with a 52-V, 676-Wh battery and a manufacturer/author-reported pedal-assist range of 50–100 miles; the article also gave a lower figure for throttle-heavy riding. These are claims, not independently verified real-world results. Actual distance varies with rider and cargo weight, terrain, speed, assist mode, weather, and battery condition.

Specialized Turbo Vado 2.0: a better-documented commuter package

Specialized’s archived 2019 page lists a 460-Wh removable battery, a 250-W nominal motor, hydraulic disc brakes, and commuter-oriented components, including fender and rack mounts. It also gives a historical price of $2,850. The manufacturer describes the assist behavior this way: “The more power you put out, the more power the motor puts out.” Treat that as the brand’s description, not an independent performance finding. A removable battery can make indoor charging easier, while mounts provide a route to adding carrying or weather-protection equipment.

Other machines in the 2019 roundup

The roundup also included the Delfast Offroad, Luna X-1 Enduro, and Scout Pro Hardtail, which sit closer to high-output or off-road riding than an ordinary urban commute. It covered premium options such as the Trefecta RDR, Specialized S-Works Turbo Creo SL Founders Edition, Nua Electrica, and Tern HSD S+, as well as gadget-oriented designs. Their inclusion reflects the breadth of the 2019 e-bike scene, not a claim that they compete directly with the commuter-focused models above.

The Škoda Klement was described as a concept with no pedals. It should not be treated as a conventional pedal-assist bicycle, and its presence in a roundup does not establish that it was a road-legal production e-bike.

How to assess a 2019 e-bike for daily use

Check local rules before comparing motor numbers

Motor output alone does not determine whether a bike is legal for a particular road, trail, or cycleway. Rules can depend on rated power, assistance speed, throttle behavior, and vehicle design. This matters particularly for high-output models; verify the current rules where you ride rather than inferring legality from a 2019 article.

Read battery capacity and range as different measures

Watt-hours describe battery energy capacity, not guaranteed distance. A claimed range is meaningful only alongside its test conditions and riding mode, which are not consistently provided for these models. For a used bike, battery age, storage, charging history, and present condition also affect usable range; none can be inferred from the original specification.

Account for the full commuting setup

A rack, fender mounts, lights, removable battery, and compatible cargo accessories can matter more day to day than a headline motor figure. Check what is included versus optional and whether accessories fit the exact model and year. The 2019 sources do not give consistent data on weight, replacement-part availability, or service support, so inspect those points directly before buying a used example.

What changed in the commuter-bike context since 2019?

Trek’s current Allant+ Gen 1 overview provides a separate modern comparison point, not evidence that the model appeared in New Atlas’s 2019 roundup. Trek describes assist up to 28 mph, batteries up to 625 Wh, and standard rack, fenders, and lights. Those are manufacturer claims for the current overview and should not be retroactively applied to the 2019 bikes or treated as a like-for-like test.

The 2019 examples remain useful for understanding the range of design priorities—cargo flexibility, simplicity, folding, advertised range, and integrated commuter equipment. They do not establish present-day prices, stock, resale values, warranty status, or the condition of any surviving battery.
