For most players, Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) is the right choice: it brings six official Halo games together on Xbox and Windows, with campaigns, multiplayer, Firefight, and an official Steam Workshop mod route. Choose a community project such as SPV3 when you specifically want that project’s distinct experience and are prepared to check its separate setup, compatibility, and support requirements.
What you get with Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Halo Support lists six games in MCC: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4. It is available on Xbox and Windows, by direct purchase or through some Xbox Game Pass plans. Halo Support’s MCC FAQ has the availability details.
Halo Waypoint describes the package as containing 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps. Those are the publisher’s figures, not independent measurements. Each included game also brings its own multiplayer maps, modes, and game types. Halo Waypoint’s MCC page lists the collection’s contents.
The official quick-start guide organizes play into campaigns, multiplayer, and Firefight, and points newcomers to Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary as a starting place. The guide is included in Halo Support’s MCC FAQ.

What “community Halo port” means—and why the distinction matters
“Community port” is not one standardized product category. Projects can differ in the game engine they use, their prerequisites, supported platforms, installation process, and current maintenance. The details below apply to SPV3 as documented by its developers; they should not be assumed to describe other projects.
SPV3 is separate from an MCC Workshop mod
In a September 9, 2022 update, SPV3 developers described the project as “a ‘standalone’ mod built on Halo Custom Edition’s engine with the OpenSauce 4.0 extension.” They said its MCC compatibility was limited to disabling Custom Edition DRM when the user owns Combat Evolved Anniversary, and that many SPV3 features depend on OpenSauce. SPV3 developers’ DevUpdate 3 provides that dated technical description. It does not establish present-day installation instructions, so consult the project’s current documentation before attempting setup.

MCC’s Steam Workshop, by contrast, is a way to use supported mods within MCC. SPV3’s documented relationship to MCC does not make it an ordinary Workshop item.
How MCC mods and creator tools work
Using a Steam Workshop mod
- Subscribe to the Workshop item you want to use.
- Launch the game using the “Halo MCC Anti-Cheat Disabled” option.
- Follow the setup directions provided by that mod’s creator.
Halo Support says MCC Workshop mods include multiplayer and Firefight maps, gameplay tweaks, and custom campaigns; mods do not work with Easy Anti-Cheat enabled. Halo Support also says it does not provide troubleshooting or mod-development guidance. See Halo Support’s MCC mod instructions.

Downloading MCC mod tools
Microsoft says MCC mod tools for Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3 can be downloaded through Steam. The tool overview says the Halo: CE tools are available regardless of which MCC titles you own; the Halo 2 and Halo 3 tools require a Steam license for the corresponding base game. These are creator-tool access rules—not a promise that the tools install SPV3 or any other particular community project. Microsoft’s MCC modding documentation covers the tools.
If you plan to distribute game content or use a mod commercially, review the current MCC EULA rather than relying on a general summary: it sets limits on distributing Microsoft game content and modded versions and on commercial use, and requires a valid Xbox Live account. Microsoft’s Xbox rules and agreements page is the relevant place to review current terms. This is not legal advice.

Which option fits your situation?
| What matters to you | Halo: The Master Chief Collection | A community project such as SPV3 |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Six official games; Halo Waypoint lists 67 campaign missions and more than 120 multiplayer maps. | May focus on a narrower experience or a substantial overhaul; check the specific project. |
| Platform | Halo Support lists Xbox and Windows. | Check the individual project’s current platform and operating-system requirements. |
| Setup and support | Has an official Workshop workflow. Mods require launching with anti-cheat disabled; Halo Support does not troubleshoot mods. | May have separate engine, loader, or dependency requirements and project-specific documentation. |
| Multiplayer and local play | Online play is supported; local split-screen is available on Xbox, not PC. Campaign and Campaign Playlists cannot use cross-play. | Do not assume MCC’s multiplayer, split-screen, or cross-play rules apply; verify the project’s documentation. |
| Ownership and tools | Halo Support lists direct purchase and access through some Game Pass plans. Creator-tool access has title-specific Steam license requirements. | May have distinct ownership or prerequisite requirements; check the project’s current instructions. |
The MCC multiplayer and split-screen details in the table come from Halo Support’s MCC FAQ; tool access rules are in Microsoft’s MCC modding documentation.

Can you play MCC split-screen on PC?
No. Halo Support’s guide says PC players can play with friends over Xbox network but cannot use split-screen. On Xbox, split-screen uses two or more Xbox controllers and supports up to four players on one console; when more than two players use split-screen, only Multiplayer is available. The guide also says online cross-play is available between Xbox and PC, but Campaign and Campaign Playlists cannot use cross-play. See Halo Support’s multiplayer and split-screen guidance.
How to decide
- Choose MCC if you want a broad collection of official campaigns and multiplayer, play on Xbox or Windows, or prefer the official Workshop route for supported mods.
- Choose a community project if its specific changes are what you want and you are comfortable verifying its current prerequisites, compatibility, and support independently.
- Choose both if you want the official collection as your main game and a separate project for a different take on Halo. Treat each project’s install and ownership requirements on their own terms.
There is no established, comparable current player-count figure here for MCC and individual community projects, so population should not be used to claim one is more active than the other.
