Cypress helps make UI tests more reliable by waiting for the specific UI state a test expects, observing or stubbing the network requests behind that state, and keeping tests isolated. It does not eliminate flakiness: weak assertions, uncontrolled dependencies, shared state, and CI differences can still produce failures. The key is to match each problem with the right test design—not to add arbitrary delays or rely on retries.

Why UI tests become unreliable

A UI test is vulnerable when it assumes something has happened without checking that it has. The page may still be rendering, an animation may be in progress, a request may be unfinished, or a test server or database may be unavailable. Dependencies, network conditions, and differences between local and CI environments can also affect results. Cypress identifies these as common sources of unreliable tests; its guidance is technical documentation, not an independent comparison of test tools. Cypress: Test retries

Start by identifying the condition the next step truly depends on: a visible element, a changed value, or a particular network response. Then wait for and assert that condition instead of guessing how many milliseconds it needs.

Fix timing races without arbitrary sleeps

Use assertions that describe the required outcome. Cypress retries linked queries and assertions while waiting for the expected state, so a test can allow a dynamic interface to settle without hard-coding a delay. For example, assert that a success message is visible after submitting a form rather than waiting a fixed interval and then checking.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When a UI change depends on a request, intercept and alias the relevant request, wait for it, and then assert on the resulting page. This ties the test to the event it needs rather than to an assumed duration. Cypress: Intercepting network requests

Do not confuse retry-ability with test retries. Queries and assertions in a linked chain retry automatically; actions and other non-query commands are not repeatedly issued as though they were queries. Configured test retries rerun a failed test and may rerun its hooks. They are a separate feature and are off by default. Retrying can help expose or contain transient failures, but it does not repair a flawed test or make an unstable dependency reliable. Cypress: Retry-ability Cypress: Test retries

Control network behavior deliberately

cy.intercept() can inspect request URLs, headers, and bodies; stub a response including its body, status, and headers; delay a response; or observe and wait for a request. Choose the approach based on what the test should prove:

  • Stub a dependency when the test needs a controlled scenario, such as a predictable error response or empty result set.
  • Use the real server when exercising the integration itself is part of the test’s purpose.
  • Mix both where appropriate: Cypress supports stubbed and real requests within the same test.

Avoid intercepting every request with a broad wildcard when only one or two requests matter; Cypress notes that broad interception adds overhead. Cypress: Intercepting network requests Cypress: Optimizing test performance

Diagnose tests that pass locally but fail in CI

CI can differ from a developer’s machine in network speed, environment, and available resources. A test that races ahead of a request locally may fail more often under different conditions. Check that the request driving the UI has completed before asserting on the dependent content, and assert meaningful intermediate steps rather than letting a failure surface much later.

Also inspect whether the CI process changes application state or resource availability. Cypress Cloud Test Replay is a documented option for examining a recorded CI run; it can help locate where a failure occurred. Cypress: Debugging Cypress Cloud: Detect and fix flaky tests

Keep tests independent of hidden state

A test should pass when run alone, reordered, or after another test is skipped. If it depends on a previous test leaving a logged-in session, a populated database, or browser state behind, suite order can mask the dependency.

Cypress recommends independent tests and documents end-to-end test isolation as enabled by default. Design setup and cleanup so each test establishes the state it needs rather than borrowing it from its neighbors. Cypress: Writing and organizing tests

Choose the test scope that matches the question

Different test types prove different things. A fast, focused test is useful, but a passing test at one layer does not establish that the entire application works.

Component Focused component behavior and fast feedback; Cypress mounts components in a real browser. The mounted component behaved as asserted in that test setup. That all app integrations or full user journeys work.
API Endpoint behavior without rendering a page. The exercised endpoint behavior met the test’s assertions. That the UI renders or that the complete user journey works.
End-to-end Integrated user journeys across the application. The covered journey worked through the integrations exercised in that run. That every component, endpoint, or untested journey is correct.

A balanced suite uses the layer that gives the clearest answer for each risk: component tests for focused behavior, API tests for endpoint contracts, and end-to-end tests for integrated journeys. Find accessibility gaps without overstating scan results

Accessibility checks can be added to component or end-to-end coverage. Automated scans can identify known rule violations, such as missing labels or poor contrast, but cannot prove that an interface is fully accessible or certify complete WCAG conformance.

Pair scans with explicit assertions for intended accessible names and semantics, and manually assess issues that automated rules cannot determine. Cypress documents Cypress Accessibility as a paid Cypress Cloud offering. Cypress: Accessibility testing

Make slow suites faster by finding the bottleneck

Measure where time is going before changing the suite. Cypress calls out a mismatched test type, repeated logins, real network calls, bloated CI setup, and resource-constrained machines as potential contributors. Prefer the narrowest suitable test scope, avoid arbitrary waits, and intercept only requests relevant to the scenario. Use retries sparingly rather than using them to hide slowness or instability.

Cypress Cloud documentation describes analytics for slow and flaky tests. Use those signals to investigate a specific bottleneck rather than assuming that every slow test has the same cause. Cypress: Optimizing test performance

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Cypress retries run by default?

Configured test retries are off by default. Cypress’s automatic query-and-assertion retry-ability is separate.

Does a passing component test mean the full application works?

No. Component tests cover the mounted component behavior in their test setup, not every integration or complete user journey.
