Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →SQL injection occurs when untrusted input changes the structure or meaning of a database command. In student projects, the common cause is building a SQL string by joining request or form data to query text, then executing the result. The dependable fix is to define the SQL first and bind values as parameters; validation and restricted database permissions add protection but do not replace that fix.
How SQL injection enters a student project
MITRE classifies SQL injection as CWE-89: Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an SQL Command. The central problem is not that an input looks suspicious. It is that the application lets input become part of executable SQL syntax.
A typical vulnerable pattern is to assemble a query by concatenating a form value or request parameter into the SQL text—for example, appending a supplied login name to a WHERE clause and executing the resulting string. OWASP uses this kind of Java example to illustrate the risk in its SQL Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet. The same design flaw can occur in other languages and frameworks when they construct executable SQL from mixed code and data.
Do not try to make this pattern safe by removing a few characters or filtering for suspicious-looking input. Rules like that are easy to get wrong, and ordinary valid values may contain characters that have special meaning in SQL. Keep query structure under application control instead.

Use parameters for data values
Write the SQL structure with placeholders, then pass user-controlled values separately through the language or database API’s parameter-binding feature. The database treats bound values as data rather than interpreting them as additional SQL syntax. OWASP’s Query Parameterization Cheat Sheet gives examples across common web languages; consult the official documentation for the API used in your project.
OWASP summarizes the principle this way: “Prepared statements are simple to write and easier to understand than dynamic queries, and parameterized queries force the developer to define all SQL code first and pass in each parameter to the query later.”

Parameterization applies to values such as names, search terms, IDs, and dates. It does not generally let a placeholder stand for SQL structure such as a table name, column name, or sort direction. If a screen offers a choice of sort order or field, map that choice to a finite set of options defined in application code; do not append the user’s raw text to the query. Where practical, redesign the query so the structural choice is not dynamic.
Check every way a project builds or executes queries
Prepared statements are not a guarantee if a code path later bypasses them. An ORM can still be used unsafely if the project builds raw SQL strings or otherwise uses an escape hatch that executes constructed query text. OWASP also demonstrates named parameters in HQL and warns that query construction must remain safe. Review all routes from user input to an executable query, not just the main database helper.

Stored procedures can be an effective option when implemented safely, but they are not automatically immune to injection. A procedure that creates dynamic SQL unsafely can reintroduce the same vulnerability. In a code review, inspect the procedure’s construction of SQL as well as the application’s call to it.
| Approach | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Prepared or parameterized query | The project uses the language and database API’s parameter feature, and every user-controlled data value is bound rather than concatenated into SQL text. |
| Stored procedure | The application calls it safely, and the procedure does not build dynamic SQL from untrusted input without a safe design. |
| ORM or query builder | Values use the framework’s parameter API; raw-query features and other paths that construct executable query text receive the same scrutiny. |
Use validation and least privilege as additional defenses
Validate input to enforce the application’s own rules—for example, that an ID has the expected form—but do not treat validation as a substitute for parameter binding. OWASP strongly discourages escaping all input as the principal defense because escaping is fragile and depends on database-specific behavior.

Give the database account used by the application only the permissions it needs. Least privilege can limit the damage possible if a flaw remains, but it does not repair an injectable query. OWASP’s prevention guidance and MITRE CWE-89 both identify restricted privileges as a mitigation alongside fixing query construction.

- Find query execution points. Search the project for database calls, raw SQL, query-builder escape hatches, and stored-procedure calls.
- Trace untrusted values. Follow form fields, URL parameters, API inputs, and other externally supplied data to each query.
- Check the boundary between code and data. Confirm the SQL structure is defined separately and each user-controlled value is bound as a parameter.
- Review dynamic structure. For table names, columns, and sort directions, require fixed choices or an application-controlled allow-list rather than arbitrary input.
- Inspect procedures and ORM escape hatches. Check for unsafe dynamic SQL inside procedures and constructed strings passed through raw-query APIs.
- Check database permissions. Confirm the application’s account has only the access needed for its tasks.
These practices follow OWASP’s SQL Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet, its Query Parameterization Cheat Sheet, and MITRE’s CWE-89. Their guidance can change; check the current documentation and the official parameter API for the specific language, framework, and database in use.
