Start by matching your Puppeteer release to its supported browser, then check installation paths, Linux dependencies and sandbox settings, writable container directories, and the specific operation that timed out. The fixes below follow those failure stages and show what to inspect before changing timeouts or launch flags.
First, identify the failure stage
The same symptom, such as a timeout or a Chrome launch failure, can have different causes depending on whether Puppeteer is installing a browser, starting it, loading a URL, or waiting for an element. Use the error text and the operation that produced it to narrow the diagnosis.
| Stage | Typical symptom | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Install | Could not find expected browser locally |
Whether the browser download completed and whether install-time and runtime cache locations match. |
| Launch | Failed to launch chrome, missing shared libraries, or a crashpad database error |
Browser/Puppeteer compatibility, Linux dependencies, sandbox configuration, and writable directories. |
| Navigate | page.goto() throws or navigation times out |
URL validity, network reachability, SSL, navigation rules, and the actual response status. |
| Interact | TimeoutError from a selector or other wait |
Selector correctness, page state, and whether the expected element can appear. |
Puppeteer does not publish an incidence statistic establishing which errors are most common, so treat this as a practical diagnostic order rather than a frequency ranking.
Fix “Could not find expected browser locally”
Starting with Puppeteer v19, the default browser cache is ~/.cache/puppeteer, based on the home directory. The error can mean the browser was never downloaded, or that installation and runtime are using different cache locations.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check the installation output for a completed browser download. Package managers or build environments that block install scripts may prevent it.
- Install the browser explicitly with
npx puppeteer browsers install. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide also documents corresponding commands for Yarn, pnpm, and Bun. - If you configure a custom cache directory, ensure both installation and runtime use that configuration. Reinstall the browser after changing the cache setting so it is placed in the new location.
Use the current Puppeteer troubleshooting guide for the package-manager-specific commands and configuration details; do not assume an old cache path or install command applies to your project.
Fix Chrome launch failures on Linux
Check missing system libraries
A browser can be present and still fail to start because the operating system image lacks required shared libraries. Inspect the browser executable’s dependencies; Puppeteer’s guide suggests using ldd chrome to identify missing libraries. Install the dependencies appropriate to your distribution rather than copying a package list from an unrelated or older image.
Check the current Puppeteer system requirements and its linked platform dependency lists. That page also states current Node.js and supported platform requirements; verify them against the Puppeteer release you actually use.
Investigate “No usable sandbox!” safely
This message points to the host’s sandbox or distribution configuration. Diagnose that setup before changing launch flags. Puppeteer strongly discourages running Chrome without its sandbox; its guide describes --no-sandbox only for content the operator absolutely trusts. Do not treat the flag as a general fix for launch errors.

On Ubuntu 23.10 and later, AppArmor user-namespace restrictions can affect downloaded Chrome for Testing. Check whether that documented condition applies to the host before changing the browser configuration.
Align Puppeteer and its browser
Puppeteer releases are paired with specific browser releases because its automation protocols can change. As the Puppeteer FAQ explains, “Every Puppeteer release is tightly bundled with a specific browser release to ensure compatibility with the implementation of the underlying protocols, the Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi.”
Check the supported browsers table for the exact Puppeteer version in your project. Starting with Puppeteer v20, the expected Chrome path uses Chrome for Testing; older releases used Chromium. A system-installed Chrome is not necessarily the browser version that matches your Puppeteer package.
Fix crashpad errors in read-only containers
An error such as chrome_crashpad_handler: --database is required can occur when Chrome cannot write the profile, configuration, or cache files it needs during startup. A read-only container filesystem does not remove those write requirements.

/tmppaths as an option. - Set an explicit writable Puppeteer
userDataDirwhen needed. - Confirm that the user running Node and Chrome owns the mounted directories and can write to them.
See the deployment and troubleshooting guidance for the documented container configuration options.
Diagnose TimeoutError instead of guessing
Puppeteer’s TimeoutError API reference defines the error as indicating that an operation was terminated after its timeout. It does not identify the root cause. Examples include page.waitForSelector() and puppeteer.launch(), which need different investigations.
When waiting for a selector
- Verify the selector against the page’s actual DOM.
- Check that the page has reached the state in which the element is expected to exist.
- Determine whether the element is conditional, delayed, or absent for this URL or session.
- Increase the timeout only if the expected condition is valid and simply takes longer in this environment.
When launching the browser
Check whether the expected browser is installed and compatible, then inspect dependencies, sandbox configuration, and writable paths. Increasing a launch timeout will not repair a missing executable or an unavailable shared library.
When calling page.goto()
The Frame.goto() API reference documents several causes of navigation failure: an invalid URL, an SSL error, a timeout, an unreachable remote server, a failed main resource, or URL blocklist/allowlist rules that reject navigation. Check the exact URL and network conditions, and inspect any configured navigation rules.

A valid HTTP response such as 404 or 500 does not by itself make goto() throw in headless shell; inspect the response status if the page loaded with an HTTP error. about:blank and a same-URL hash change have special success behavior, so they should not be diagnosed like an ordinary failed remote navigation.
Investigate ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT on remote HTTP pages
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide describes a Chrome for Testing HTTPS-warning behavior that can produce net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT on remote HTTP navigation. In the documented case, Chrome displays a warning page; local HTTP hosts do not trigger that warning. First verify that the page is actually this interstitial. The guide documents clicking through the warning or using a launch argument to disable the feature, but do not apply the workaround to an unrelated blocked request.
Collect useful diagnostics
If the cause is still unclear, capture browser output or protocol diagnostics rather than repeatedly changing settings. Puppeteer’s debugging guide documents these options:
- Set
dumpio: truein launch options to forward browser-process output to Node’s standard streams. - For unresolved asynchronous calls, use the guide’s
NODE_DEBUGprotocol logging instructions. - Inspect
browser.debugInfo.pendingProtocolErrorsfor pending protocol errors.
Logs can contain request or page details. Review and redact them before sharing outside your team.

If your goal is to capture a website rather than operate Chrome directly, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; its cleanup steps can accept cookie/consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture.
For example, save a WebP screenshot of Stripe with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 404 response mean Puppeteer’s page.goto() failed?
Not necessarily. A valid HTTP 404 or 500 response does not itself make goto() throw in headless shell; inspect the returned response status.
Should I add –no-sandbox to fix Chrome launch errors?
Not as a default fix. Puppeteer strongly discourages disabling the sandbox and describes it only for content the operator absolutely trusts.
