Beginner game code gets harder to extend when classes take on unrelated jobs, inheritance is stretched to represent mix-and-match abilities, or systems depend too tightly on one another. These are useful design problems to watch for—not a ranked list of the mistakes beginners make most often. Start with the simplest structure that fits your game, then refactor when a concrete change becomes awkward.
When does inheritance become a problem in game development?
Inheritance is a good fit when one type really is a specialized form of another and that relationship is likely to remain stable. For example, a basic enemy class might define shared health and damage behavior, while a flying enemy adds flight-specific behavior.
It becomes brittle when you use the class tree to represent combinations of abilities. Apple’s archived GameplayKit guide illustrates the problem with a tower-defense game: a shooting enemy and a tower may both need targeting and firing, but neither is naturally a subtype of the other. Moving those behaviors into a common root can leave that root full of checks for each subclass’s identity, making it more complex to maintain.
Warning signs of an inheritance tangle
- You are adding subclasses mainly to combine capabilities, such as “fast,” “armored,” and “shooting.”
- Changing a shared base class requires special cases for particular subclasses.
- A new object type needs to inherit from a class that does not accurately describe what it is.
These signs do not mean inheritance is always wrong. They suggest that behavior may be changing independently of the object’s type.

When should a game use composition instead?
Composition builds an object from smaller behaviors or components rather than requiring every capability to appear in its ancestry. A tower and a shooting enemy, for instance, could each use targeting and weapon components while remaining different kinds of objects. Apple’s GameplayKit guide describes an entity-component approach, and Microsoft’s beginner space-game curriculum teaches both inheritance and composition.
Use composition when abilities need to be mixed and matched across otherwise unrelated object types. Keep inheritance when a stable “is a kind of” relationship makes the code clearer. Neither approach is a rule to impose everywhere: a small game with a few straightforward objects may be easier to understand with simple classes than with a new component framework.

| Question | Inheritance may fit | Composition may fit |
|---|---|---|
| What does the relationship represent? | A stable subtype relationship: one object is a specialized kind of another. | A capability that can be attached to different kinds of objects. |
| How do behaviors vary? | Most subclasses share a predictable set of behaviors. | Objects need different combinations of independently changing behaviors. |
| What happens when you add an object type? | It fits the existing hierarchy without special cases. | It can reuse needed capabilities without changing a shared root class. |
How do you avoid giving one class too many jobs?
A class becomes difficult to change when it owns several unrelated responsibilities. Unity’s SOLID overview describes the single-responsibility principle as a module, class, or function being responsible for one thing.
Consider a player class that handles input, movement, health, inventory, interface updates, and saving. A change to the inventory might then affect code that also handles saving or user input. Instead, give each responsibility a clear home and keep the player object focused on coordinating the behaviors it actually needs. For a very small game, that may mean a few well-named classes or functions—not a separate abstraction for every line of code.

A practical split
- Keep movement logic responsible for moving the character.
- Let health logic track damage and survival state.
- Put inventory rules in an inventory-focused class or module.
- Have interface and save systems obtain the information they need through a clear boundary rather than taking over the player’s entire implementation.
How do you keep game classes loosely coupled?
Direct calls are often the clearest choice when one object has one well-defined dependency. A player can call its movement component, for example, without needing an event system.
Consider an event or observer mechanism when several independent systems need to react to something without the object that produced it owning or knowing all of them. Unity’s observer tutorial presents the pattern as a way to support loose coupling between interacting objects. A health change might be relevant to a user interface, sound effect, and achievement system; with observers, those systems can respond without the health logic directly managing each one.

Patterns are tools, not finished solutions to copy into every project. Unity makes that point in its game programming patterns guidance. If only one caller needs an immediate response, adding event infrastructure may make the code harder to follow rather than easier to maintain.

Do not base motion on machine speed
Game logic should not assume that every computer processes the same number of updates in the same amount of time. If movement is calculated as a fixed distance per update, a machine that runs more updates can move an object faster. Use the engine’s appropriate time-step mechanism so movement reflects elapsed time. Unity’s patterns guidance describes independence from clock speed as a game-loop requirement; the exact implementation depends on the engine and its version.

Learn the engine’s callback order
Do not guess when initialization, updates, and cleanup happen. A system that reads another object before that object is ready can fail intermittently or behave differently from what the code suggests. For Unity projects, consult the relevant version’s script execution order and lifecycle callback documentation rather than assuming callbacks run in the order you want. Other engines have their own lifecycle rules.
Quick Recap
A simple way to review your object design
- Describe each class’s job. If the description joins unrelated tasks with “and,” consider separating those responsibilities.
- Check what inheritance means. Ask whether each subclass is genuinely a specialized version of its parent, or whether it just needs one of the parent’s abilities.
- Look for repeated capability combinations. If unrelated object types need the same behavior, consider a shared component or other composed behavior.
- Trace dependencies. Use direct calls for clear, simple relationships; consider events when independent systems need to react without being owned by the caller.
- Verify runtime assumptions. Check how the chosen engine handles time steps, callback order, and object lifecycles before relying on a particular sequence.
