Hair loss in women has several possible causes, including hereditary pattern thinning, autoimmune disease, thyroid or hormonal conditions, nutrient deficiency, tight hairstyles, and temporary shedding after childbirth or illness. A widening part may fit female pattern hair loss, while patchy loss or scalp changes can signal a different problem—but appearance alone cannot establish the cause. Arrange a medical evaluation for new, persistent, worsening, patchy, or unexplained loss.
How the pattern can offer clues
Notice when the loss began, where it appears, whether the scalp has changed, and what was happening in your health or hair routine beforehand. These details can help a clinician assess possible causes, but they are not a home diagnosis: different conditions can look alike and need different treatment.
- Speed: Was there sudden, noticeable shedding, or gradual thinning over time?
- Distribution: Is thinning diffuse, concentrated in a pattern such as a widening center part, or occurring in distinct patches?
- Scalp signs: Is there irritation, scale, inflammation, or an area that appears scarred?
- Context: Did loss follow childbirth, illness, surgery, or high fever? Consider tight hairstyles, nutrition, medications or treatments, and known thyroid or hormonal conditions.
Common causes of hair loss in women
| Possible cause | Clues and context | Why evaluation matters |
|---|---|---|
| Female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) | Usually gradual thinning or a widening center part; it is hereditary and is more common after menopause. Hormones may also play a role. | A clinician can confirm the pattern and check for other causes that may look similar. For diagnosed female pattern hair loss, non-prescription minoxidil is an option commonly recommended by dermatologists. AAD guidance on female pattern hair loss. |
| Alopecia areata | An autoimmune condition that can cause patches of hair loss on the scalp or elsewhere, including eyebrows and eyelashes. | A dermatologist may examine the scalp and history; selected cases may warrant blood tests or a biopsy. AAD: alopecia areata causes. |
| Temporary shedding after a trigger | Shedding can follow childbirth, significant illness, surgery, or high fever. | Record the timing and any major health events to discuss with a clinician; not all diffuse shedding has the same cause. AAD overview of hair loss. |
| Thyroid or hormonal conditions | Thyroid disease may contribute to thinning; PCOS or other hormonal changes may also be involved. | Medical review can identify whether an underlying condition needs attention. AAD overview of hair loss. |
| Nutrient deficiency | Inadequate iron, protein, zinc, or biotin may contribute to hair loss. | Testing and clinician-directed correction are preferable to taking supplements without evidence of a deficiency. Excess amounts of some nutrients can worsen hair loss. AAD overview of hair loss. |
| Traction alopecia | Repeated pulling from tight buns, braids, or ponytails can affect the hairline or other areas under tension. | Reduce tension early. Continued pulling can cause permanent loss. AAD guidance on hairstyles that pull. |
| Scarring alopecia | Inflammation damages follicles and may leave areas of hair loss with scarring. | Once a follicle is destroyed by scarring, it cannot grow hair again, so prompt assessment is important to limit further loss. AAD overview of hair loss. |
When to see a doctor
Make an appointment with a dermatologist or other appropriate clinician if hair loss is new and unexplained, persistent, worsening, or patchy, or if it comes with scalp changes. Seek evaluation promptly when inflammation or scarring may be present, because scarring can permanently damage follicles. Early assessment can help identify treatable causes and guide the right care.

What to do while arranging an evaluation
- Note when shedding or thinning began and whether it is changing.
- Write down recent childbirth, illness, surgery, or high fever, along with relevant health conditions and medicines or treatments.
- Ease hairstyles that pull on the hair, especially if tension affects the hairline.
- Do not treat supplements as a default fix. Ask a clinician whether testing is appropriate before taking nutrients for hair loss; excessive amounts of some nutrients may make it worse. AAD tips for managing hair loss.
Treatment depends on the cause
For female pattern hair loss, AAD identifies non-prescription minoxidil as FDA-approved for women and commonly recommended. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes before you consider it; minoxidil is not a general treatment for every kind of shedding, alopecia areata, thyroid-related loss, or nutrient deficiency. The appropriate treatment and response vary by diagnosis and individual. AAD guidance on female pattern hair loss.
