Browser compatibility problems happen when browsers, versions, operating systems, devices, or assistive technologies handle a feature or interaction differently. The practical fix is not to test every possible combination: define the environments your audience needs, check the features your site uses, and test important user flows across representative browsers and devices. Automation helps make those checks repeatable, but it does not replace real-platform or accessibility testing.

What causes browser compatibility issues?

A website may behave differently because browser versions support different features, browser engines implement features differently, or operating systems and devices affect rendering and behavior. Assistive technologies introduce another dimension: a page that looks correct may still be difficult to navigate by keyboard or screen reader. MDN’s introduction to cross-browser testing describes the practical need to check both functionality and user experience across target environments.

Unsupported or differently implemented features

Newer CSS, JavaScript, or web APIs may be absent in older browser versions. A feature can also exist but behave differently across engines or platforms. Check compatibility for important features while implementing them, then decide whether to supply a fallback or accept a reduced but still usable experience. MDN’s browser compatibility data and guidance on supporting older browsers are useful references; compatibility information changes, so do not rely on memory alone.

Layout, device, and operating-system differences

Viewport size, device class, hardware, and operating-system integrations can affect layout and interactions. A page that works in one Chromium-based browser is not thereby verified in Firefox or Safari. Media is a particular example: available codecs vary substantially by operating system, as Playwright’s browser documentation notes.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Accessibility gaps

Visual rendering does not establish that a page is accessible. Keyboard operation and screen-reader navigation need their own checks. MDN recommends simple keyboard and screen-reader testing, and notes that Baseline indicates browser support for web features rather than proving accessibility, usability, performance, or security.

Which browsers and devices should you test?

Set a support range with the site owner or product team instead of promising universal compatibility. Base the range on actual or expected audience, region, product obligations, and the functionality at stake. Where available, use site analytics or other audience evidence. MDN’s testing strategies guidance likewise recommends choosing an appropriate strategy rather than attempting every combination.

Write down the support policy so the team can make consistent decisions. Record the browser and version policy, operating system, device class, and assistive-technology expectations. Include representative desktop and mobile environments and the distinct engines that matter to your users. Prioritize combinations by audience and risk rather than mechanically enumerating every theoretical device-browser-version permutation.

How to test a website across browsers

  1. Define the target environments. Agree on supported browsers, version policy, operating systems, device classes, and relevant assistive technologies. Use audience evidence where available, and document what is outside the support range.
  2. Inventory risky features and flows. List newer or platform-sensitive CSS, APIs, media, and interactions. Identify the core user journeys—such as navigation, forms, menus, and media playback—and define the expected result for each.
  3. Check feature support early. Look up important features in MDN browser compatibility data and decide on fallbacks where needed. Resolve likely support issues before a feature is deeply integrated.
  4. Test changes in a stable browser first. Exercise the changed behavior and fix general defects before widening the test matrix. This catches straightforward problems early without confusing them with platform-specific differences.
  5. Expand to representative target browsers and devices. Cover distinct browser engines and the desktop or mobile environments important to your audience. Use emulation to increase breadth, but check physical devices when hardware or operating-system behavior matters.
  6. Automate repeatable functional checks. Run core flows against Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects with Playwright. Add branded Chrome or Edge channels when those specific browser binaries are required. Keep Playwright and its browser binaries current; the Playwright browser documentation explains supported browsers, channels, and device emulation.
  7. Do manual, accessibility, and platform-specific checks. Test keyboard-only use and screen-reader navigation. Verify features such as media playback on the actual relevant browser and operating system when codec support or native integration matters.
  8. Record reproducible failures. Capture browser and version, operating system, device or viewport, preconditions, steps, expected result, actual result, and evidence such as console output or screenshots. This gives developers enough context to reproduce the issue.

What automation can and cannot tell you

Automation is strongest for repeatable checks: it can run the same navigation, form, menu, or other functional assertions across configured browser projects. Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, plus branded Chrome and Edge channels when installed and configured. It also supports device emulation. Keep the runner and browser binaries aligned and up to date, following the official setup guidance.

Emulation and engine coverage are not identical to testing every branded browser on every operating system. Playwright WebKit is not branded Safari; its documentation describes platform-dependent differences, including media codec availability. For a high-risk or platform-specific requirement, test on the actual target browser and operating system. Likewise, a screenshot can show a visual result at a particular viewport, but it cannot by itself establish that an interactive flow works or that a page is accessible.

Ways to capture screenshots during compatibility checks

For a quick visual record from a browser you have open, use the browser’s built-in screenshot or developer tools, then compare the same page at matching viewport dimensions in each target environment. For repeatable scripted captures, use browser automation. If you need screenshots without maintaining browser-capture setup, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server; its clean-shot handling removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. A screenshot service is useful evidence for rendering, not a replacement for interaction, accessibility, or real-platform checks.

Capture screenshots with Playwright

In a JavaScript project with Playwright installed, this runnable example captures the same URL in Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit at a fixed viewport. Install and update the corresponding Playwright browser binaries as described in its browser documentation.

import { chromium, firefox, webkit } from 'playwright';

const url = 'https://example.com';
const browsers = { chromium, firefox, webkit };

for (const [name, browserType] of Object.entries(browsers)) {
  const browser = await browserType.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 } });
  await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: `shot-${name}.png`, fullPage: true });
  await browser.close();
}

Use a fixed viewport and the same page state when comparing captures. Network-idle waiting may not suit every site, especially pages with persistent network activity; if navigation never settles, wait for a meaningful selector or use a deliberate delay appropriate to the behavior under test. A full-page image helps inspect long layouts, but it still does not test interaction or accessibility.

Common testing problems and how to diagnose them

  • A feature fails only in an older browser: Confirm the project’s minimum supported version, check the feature’s compatibility data, and add a fallback or revise the support decision.
  • A layout differs between browsers: Reproduce at the same viewport and device class, then compare layout and interactions across the target browsers. Add a phone or tablet check if those devices are in scope.
  • A test passes in Chromium but fails elsewhere: Add the relevant Firefox or WebKit coverage; Chromium-based browsers alone do not cover other engines. If the issue depends on a branded browser, test its required channel or actual target installation.
  • Media works on one system but not another: Check playback on the relevant official browser binaries and operating systems. Codec availability can be platform-dependent.
  • A page looks right but is hard to use: Perform keyboard-only and screen-reader checks in addition to visual inspection. Browser feature support does not establish assistive-technology compatibility.
  • An emulated mobile check misses a defect: Reproduce on a physical device where possible. Emulation broadens coverage, while real hardware can expose device- or OS-specific behavior.
  • A scripted screenshot appears blank or incomplete: Verify that navigation completed, the expected content selector appeared, and the chosen wait condition suits the page. Check console output and repeat the capture under the same viewport and state before treating the image as a browser rendering defect.

How to write a useful compatibility bug report

Include enough context for someone else to reproduce the problem, not just a screenshot. A concise report should identify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Browser name and version, plus operating system.
  • Device model or class and viewport dimensions, where relevant.
  • Preconditions, including account or page state needed to see the issue.
  • Numbered steps to reproduce.
  • Expected behavior and actual behavior.
  • Evidence such as a screenshot, relevant console output, or a recording for an interaction issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does testing in Playwright WebKit mean a site has been tested in Safari?

No. Playwright WebKit is not the branded Safari browser. Use the actual target browser and operating system when Safari-specific or platform-dependent behavior is important.

Does a screenshot prove that a page is compatible?

No. It documents visual rendering at a particular state and viewport. Functional flows, keyboard access, screen-reader navigation, and platform-specific behavior need separate checks.
