Commet is a beta chat app that connects to the Matrix ecosystem; it is a client, not a messaging network or a hosted service. The project lists Windows, Linux, and Android as supported platforms. Its feature set includes end-to-end encryption, spaces, threads, and calls, but some capabilities—including MatrixRTC and encrypted Element Call support—are experimental.
What is Commet?
Commet is an open-source Matrix client. Matrix is the underlying ecosystem it connects to, while Commet is the app people use to access Matrix conversations. The project describes its aim as building “a secure, privacy respecting app without compromising on the features you have come to expect from a modern chat client.” That is the maintainers’ goal, not the result of an independent security audit. The repository is licensed under AGPL-3.0. Commet project repository
The Matrix Foundation labels Commet “Beta,” so readers should expect active development and changing feature maturity rather than treat every listed capability as equally settled. Matrix Foundation Commet profile
Which devices can run Commet?
The project lists Windows, Linux, and Android as supported. Its README describes macOS and iOS as planned, so iPhone and Mac users should not assume they can install a supported Commet app based on that statement. Check the project’s current distribution options before choosing it as your primary client. Commet project repository

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What features does Commet offer?
Commet’s project materials list end-to-end encryption, custom emoji and stickers, GIF search, threads, encrypted room search, multiple accounts, spaces, emoji verification and cross-signing, push notifications, and URL previews. The Matrix Foundation profile separately identifies stable features including spaces, threads, multi-account support, one-to-one voice and video calls, Jitsi group calls, legacy SSO, OAuth 2.0 sign-in, multiple interface languages, emoji and image packs, and device verification it describes as “invisible cryptography.” These are project and Foundation feature listings, not independent tests of performance or security. Is Commet end-to-end encrypted?
End-to-end encryption is among Commet’s listed features, and its profile includes device verification. Those capabilities can help protect encrypted conversations, but a feature listing is not evidence of an independent security audit. Encryption support for media and calls is qualified by the Matrix Foundation as applying “if supported,” so do not infer that every call is end-to-end encrypted. Matrix Foundation Commet profile

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Does Commet support voice and video calls?
The Matrix Foundation lists one-to-one voice and video calling and Jitsi group calls as stable Commet features. It lists MatrixRTC calls as experimental. In September 2026, the Foundation also described Commet’s encrypted Element Call support as experimental and requiring users to enable it before use. Treat that option as distinct from ordinary call availability, and do not assume all calling modes have the same encryption or maturity. Widgets and their requirements
Commet supports the Matrix Widgets API, but widget hosting differs by platform: Android uses a separate activity and webview, Windows runs a separate Rust host process, and Linux uses installed Chromium instances. The Foundation’s September 25, 2026 report said two widgets developed by Commet—a collaborative drawing game and a watch-together experience—were in very early alpha. Their presence does not establish broad availability or integration with a particular streaming service. Matrix Foundation report, September 25, 2026
