To check for Linux package updates without installing them, use the command for your distribution: for Ubuntu or Debian, run sudo apt update followed by apt list --upgradable; for Fedora or RHEL, run dnf check-update; for Arch, refresh package databases and query with pacman -Qu; for openSUSE, use zypper list-updates; and for Alpine, use apk version -l '<'. The key distinction is that checking and refreshing metadata are not the same as applying upgrades.
Quick command reference
| Distribution family | Find updates without installing | Apply updates | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debian / Ubuntu | sudo apt updateapt list --upgradable |
sudo apt upgrade |
apt update refreshes repository indexes; it does not upgrade installed packages. Ubuntu package-management guide and Debian APT manual. |
| Fedora / RHEL family | dnf check-updateLegacy systems: yum check-update |
sudo dnf upgradeLegacy systems: sudo yum update |
DNF returns 100 when updates are available, 0 when none are available, and 1 on error. DNF command reference, DNF return codes, and YUM manual. |
| Arch Linux | Refresh databases, then query: sudo pacman -Sypacman -Qu |
sudo pacman -Syu |
-Qu lists outdated installed packages. Avoid treating a standalone refresh as a completed upgrade; -Syu refreshes databases and upgrades the system. pacman manual and ArchWiki pacman Rosetta. |
| openSUSE | zypper list-updates |
sudo zypper update |
Only installable updates are listed; dependency problems or vendor changes can exclude otherwise newer versions. zypper manual. |
| Alpine Linux | apk version -l '<' |
sudo apk upgrade -U -a |
The comparison shows installed packages for which the repository has a newer version. Alpine package-management documentation. |
How to check updates on Debian or Ubuntu
- Run
sudo apt updateto download current package indexes from configured repositories. This refreshes the information APT uses to determine available versions; it does not install package upgrades. - Run
apt list --upgradableto list installed packages with newer versions available in those indexes. - When ready to install, run
sudo apt upgrade. APT treats index refresh and package upgrading as separate operations; Debian also documentsfull-upgradeas a distinct operation that can handle dependency changes.
How to check updates on Fedora or RHEL
Run dnf check-update to display available updates from configured repositories without installing them. A nonzero result does not always indicate failure: DNF uses exit code 100 when updates are available, 0 when there are no updates, and 1 for an error. That makes the distinction important in scripts and monitoring. For a system that still uses YUM, yum check-update lists packages with updates available in configured repositories. Use sudo dnf upgrade or, on a legacy YUM system, sudo yum update to apply updates.
How to check updates on Arch Linux
Refresh the package databases, then query for outdated installed packages:
- Run
sudo pacman -Syto download fresh repository databases. - Run
pacman -Quto list installed packages that are out of date relative to the databases. - When you are ready to upgrade, run
sudo pacman -Syu. The-yoption refreshes databases and-uperforms a system upgrade.
For routine maintenance, use the combined -Syu operation rather than refreshing databases and leaving the system unupgraded; the pacman manual defines --sysupgrade as upgrading packages that are out of date.

How to check updates on openSUSE
Run zypper list-updates to list updates that are currently installable, then review the results. This is not necessarily a complete list of every package with a newer version: updates affected by dependency problems or a vendor change can be excluded. To apply normal package updates after review, run sudo zypper update.
How to check updates on Alpine Linux
Run apk version -l '<' to compare installed package versions with repository versions and show installed packages for which the repository version is newer. To update all installed packages, Alpine documents sudo apk upgrade -U -a.
Which command should a script use?
For a simple update-availability check on a DNF system, inspect the exit status as well as output: 100 means updates are available, 0 means none are available, and 1 means the check encountered an error. Do not treat every nonzero status as failure. The other commands above are distribution-specific; their documented behaviors differ, so automation should follow the relevant package manager’s documentation rather than assuming a shared exit-code convention.

Check first, install only when ready
Commands such as apt update and pacman -Sy refresh repository metadata; listing commands report available packages; upgrade commands change installed software. On openSUSE, the listing is limited to installable updates, while DNF explicitly distinguishes available updates from errors through its exit status. Choose the check command for your distribution, review its output, and run the corresponding upgrade command only when you intend to make system changes.
