If you mainly read novels and other text, start with a black-and-white ereader. Choose color if you regularly read color comics or illustrated books, or want color-coded highlights and notes on a compatible device. Color appears only when the ebook page contains color; a color screen does not turn a grayscale page into a color one.
Which type suits the way you read?
| Your reading or note-taking needs | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mostly novels, articles, and other text | Black-and-white | Color adds little to pages that contain no color. Compare the specific models’ resolution and current prices. |
| Comics or illustrated books with color pages | Color | The screen can display color that is present in the ebook. Some books have color covers but monochrome interior art. |
| Color-coded highlights, handwritten notes, or notebooks | A model that explicitly supports those features | For example, Kobo Libra Colour supports color highlighting and handwritten annotations with the separately sold Kobo Stylus 2. Compatibility is model-specific. |
| Price-sensitive or undecided | Compare current local prices for specific models | A color-versus-monochrome label alone does not establish the price difference across brands or regions. |
Kobo explains that its color screen shows color only on pages designed for color, and that it does not add color to pages made for black-and-white: Kobo’s explanation of its color screen.
What color changes—and what it does not
Color depends on the ebook page
A color ereader can show color artwork, diagrams, covers, and highlights when those elements are included in the book or supported note-taking tools. It cannot colorize a monochrome illustration or text page. Check samples or previews of the titles you actually read: a comic’s cover may be in color even when its interior drawings are black-and-white.

Color and black-and-white detail can have different resolutions
On the 7-inch Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo specifies 300 PPI for black-and-white content and 150 PPI for color content. These are specifications for that model, not a rule for every color ereader. If fine text or line detail matters, compare the resolution listed for the exact device and content type rather than relying on the word “color.” See the Kobo Libra Colour specifications and its official factsheet.

Do not assume color looks like a tablet
These examples are E Ink readers, not tablets. The cited specifications establish display type and resolution, but do not provide an independent, head-to-head measure of color vividness or eye comfort. If those qualities are decisive, evaluate the particular device in person where possible rather than treating the display label as a guarantee.
A concrete same-brand comparison: Kobo Clara Colour and Clara BW
Kobo’s US catalogue provides a useful comparison between two 6-inch models. The prices below are what the manufacturer’s US catalogue displayed when accessed on October 4, 2026; they are a dated snapshot, not guaranteed current prices or a general color premium.
Rank #2
- Read in color – The 7" Colorsoft display is high-contrast and easy on the eyes, with paper-like color that brings covers and content to life.
- A brand-new experience – The Kindle Colorsoft display is optimized for reading in color and is different from the Kindle Paperwhite display, which is optimized for black and white reading.
- Color your pages – Highlight your favorite scenes in yellow, orange, blue, and pink.
- Marathon reading – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 8 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
| Model | Screen listed by Kobo | Storage | US catalogue price displayed October 4, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kobo Clara Colour | 6-inch Kaleido 3 color | 16 GB | $179.99 |
| Kobo Clara BW | 6-inch Carta 1300 HD monochrome | 16 GB | $159.99 |
In that US listing snapshot, Clara Colour was $20 more than Clara BW. Check the current catalogue for your region before buying; prices and availability can change, and the observed difference should not be generalized to other models or markets. Kobo’s US eReader catalogue also describes these display and storage specifications.

- Your actual books: Look for interior color pages in the titles you read, not just colored covers or product descriptions.
- Content-specific resolution: Check whether the manufacturer lists different resolution figures for color and black-and-white content on that model.
- Notes and accessories: Confirm stylus compatibility and the cost of any separately sold accessory. Kobo says the Libra Colour works with Kobo Stylus 2 for handwritten annotations; that compatibility should not be assumed for other ereaders.
- Size and handling: Compare screen size, weight, buttons, and other ergonomics on the actual models you are considering; color alone does not settle comfort or portability.
- Store and library access: Check that your preferred ebook store and library service work in your country and with your library. Kobo lists OverDrive/Libby availability as dependent on country and library.
- Price in your region: Use current local listings, and factor in any required accessories rather than relying on a past US catalogue price.
How to interpret battery claims
Kobo says the Libra Colour can last up to 40 days under a specific manufacturer usage scenario: 30 minutes of reading per day, front light at 30%, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off. That is a stated test pattern, not a real-world guarantee or a comparison proving that color and monochrome ereaders have the same battery life. Use the conditions attached to any battery estimate when comparing devices. Details are on Kobo’s Libra Colour product page.

Choose based on the pages you read
For text-first reading, black-and-white is the sensible starting point unless a specific color feature matters to you. If your reading regularly includes color artwork or you want compatible color annotation tools, consider color—but verify that your books contain color pages, then compare the exact models’ resolution, ergonomics, accessory requirements, store and library compatibility, and current regional prices.
