That was 5.6°C above normal and, Hindustan Times and Times of India reported, the highest October temperature in south Mumbai since at least 2013. It was not Colaba’s all-time October record: the station’s October high remains 39.5°C, set on 22 October 1968.
How hot did Colaba get in October?
IMD’s station summary dated 3 October lists a maximum of 37.4°C for Colaba on 2 October 2026. The same report puts Santacruz’s maximum at 36.9°C. Both were well above their station-specific normals:

These are separate station observations, not readings from a single citywide thermometer. Colaba’s reported maximum was 0.5°C higher than Santacruz’s that day. IMD’s daily station report provides the figures and departures from normal.
Was this Colaba’s hottest October day in years?
Hindustan Times and Times of India described the 37.4°C reading as the highest October temperature in south Mumbai since at least 2013. That is a recent-period comparison, not a claim that it surpassed every October reading on record. The wording “since at least 2013” reflects the comparison reported by those outlets; IMD’s annual historical-extremes table does not yet provide a filled 2026 row.

How does it compare with Colaba’s October record?
IMD’s historical-extremes page lists 39.5°C on 22 October 1968 as Colaba’s all-time October maximum. The 2 October 2026 reading was 2.1°C below that figure, so the recent-period mark did not break the station’s October record. IMD’s historical-extremes table identifies the 1968 record.

Why was Mumbai so hot in October?
Sushma Nair, a senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre, IMD Mumbai, told Hindustan Times that changing winds during monsoon withdrawal delayed the sea breeze, while a nearby anti-cyclone also contributed. Her explanation was reported as follows:
“Monsoon should withdraw from Mumbai in a day or two. This is a period of transition, when wind patterns change from westerlies to easterlies and blocks the setting of sea breeze and delaying its onset over the city. There was also an anti-cyclone near Mumbai that contributed to the high temperature,”

This is Nair’s attributed explanation for the episode, rather than the result of a separate causal study. Hindustan Times also reported a contemporaneous forecast of daytime temperatures between 35°C and 37°C for two to three days; that was the outlook at the time, not a current forecast.
