Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →On March 12, 2024, Cognition introduced Devin as “the first AI software engineer.” The launch described a persistent software agent that could plan a task, work in a shell and code editor, browse the web, run code in a sandbox, test and debug changes, and report progress to a human. “World’s first” was Cognition’s positioning claim—not an independently established historical fact—and Devin was not shown to replace the full responsibilities of a professional software engineer.
What launched on March 12, 2024?
Cognition’s launch announcement presented Devin as more than autocomplete or a coding chatbot. A user could provide a software task in natural language, after which the agent would attempt to:
- Make a plan and break the request into steps.
- Explore an unfamiliar repository and learn its conventions.
- Use a shell, browser, and code editor.
- Write and modify files in a sandboxed computing environment.
- Run tests, investigate failures, and revise its work.
- Continue working asynchronously rather than waiting for every keystroke from a developer.
- Post progress updates, accept feedback, and return changes for human review.
Those capabilities were described by Cognition in its launch material, not established as universal, human-level competence. The product was an integrated agent workflow for software tasks, not an employee with independent authority over requirements, production systems, or organizational decisions.
Cognition’s launch announcement included demonstrations and examples involving open-source bug fixes, unfamiliar technologies, coding-interview-style tasks, software changes, and work sourced from Upwork. These should be read as company demonstrations or reports. A video demonstration is not the same as independent reproduction, sustained production use, or an audited customer case study.

Why Cognition used the phrase “AI software engineer”
The important change was the length and continuity of the interaction loop. Earlier coding assistants generally suggested a line or function, answered a question, or edited files while a developer directed each step. Devin’s pitch was that a user could delegate a larger assignment and let one agent plan, operate tools, execute code, recover from errors, and return a result.
That is a workflow and product-integration advance, not proof that autonomous software engineering had been solved. Tool use and multi-step coding were already present in other assistants, research systems, and automated program-repair projects. Cognition’s differentiator was combining those elements into a persistent, hosted environment and presenting the result as an engineer-like collaborator.
| Category | Typical workflow | Main strength | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autocomplete assistant | Suggests code as the developer types | Fast, low-friction edits | Little task-level autonomy |
| IDE agent | Edits files and runs commands while the developer supervises | Interactive implementation | Requires close direction |
| Terminal coding agent | Works through a command line in a repository | Flexible repository operations | Depends heavily on local setup and review |
| Autonomous software agent | Receives a task, works asynchronously, and reports back | Delegation and parallel work | Higher verification, security, and cost burden |
| Devin | Cognition’s hosted environment for persistent engineering tasks | Task execution, tools, collaboration, and workflow integration | Still requires requirements, review, architecture, and ownership from people |
What the SWE-bench result actually measured
Cognition published an early evaluation in which Devin resolved 79 of 570 sampled SWE-bench issues, a 13.86% end-to-end resolution rate. The report specified a 45-minute runtime limit, an issue description and repository environment as input, and no additional user guidance. The proposed patch was applied and the repository’s tests were run.

| Reported item | Value and qualification |
|---|---|
| Benchmark | SWE-bench |
| Evaluation sample | 570 issues from a 2,294-issue set |
| Resolved issues | 79 |
| Resolution rate | 13.86% under Cognition’s described setup |
| Runtime limit | 45 minutes per issue |
| Success criterion | The generated patch passed the repository’s benchmark tests |
Cognition compared that figure with an earlier reported 1.96% unassisted baseline and 4.80% assisted result. The company acknowledged that the setups were not perfectly identical and argued that an end-to-end agent setting was more representative of practical work. The result was notable for its time, but it was a narrow automated-repair measurement—not a claim that Devin could perform 13.86% of a professional engineer’s job.
The benchmark also cannot measure product design, architecture, security review, maintainability, stakeholder communication, deployment safety, long-term ownership, or prioritization of business requirements. In February 2026, OpenAI reported concerns about flawed tests and contamination risk in SWE-bench Verified and recommended newer or more carefully controlled evaluations such as SWE-bench Pro. See OpenAI’s analysis of SWE-bench Verified for that later qualification. Historical scores therefore need their date, sample, harness, and benchmark limitations attached.
What “AI software engineer” does not establish
A software-engineering job includes substantially more than producing a passing patch. It can involve:

How to evaluate Devin in a real engineering organization
Capability
- Can it resolve well-scoped bugs and multi-file changes?
- Can it learn an unfamiliar repository and preserve local conventions?
- Can it recover from failed tests instead of repeatedly retrying?
- Does it handle frontend, backend, infrastructure, and documentation work appropriately?
Reliability
- How often does it produce a usable pull request rather than a plausible-looking partial fix?
- Does it recognize ambiguity and stop for clarification?
- How often does it introduce regressions, unnecessary dependencies, or configuration drift?
Economics
- Does saved engineering time exceed subscription, compute, and review costs?
- Are tasks repetitive and well specified enough to delegate?
- Will parallel agents increase throughput, or overwhelm maintainers with more pull requests?
Security and governance
- Which repositories, credentials, networks, and deployment systems can the agent access?
- Are prompts, commands, file changes, and network activity auditable?
- Can the organization enforce approval gates and revoke access quickly?
Workflow fit
Devin is most differentiated when asynchronous delegation matters. An organization that wants an engineer in an existing editor may prefer an IDE agent; one that wants direct command-line control may prefer a terminal agent. The practical choice is usually between different forms of integration and delegation, not between “AI” and “no AI.”

Where Devin is a sensible starting point
Cognition recommended beginning with small frontend bugs, first-draft pull requests, and targeted refactors when it announced general availability. Similar low-risk tasks are useful because they have bounded scope and can be checked by tests and review.
- Repetitive backlog items with clear acceptance criteria.
- Documentation updates and codebase exploration.
- Small frontend or API fixes.
- Targeted refactors supported by strong tests.
- Parallel work on several independent, well-defined tasks.
Be cautious with ambiguous requirements, large architectural changes, security-sensitive code, poorly tested repositories, hidden business rules, and deployment work. A passing test suite cannot prove that a change is safe, complete, maintainable, or aligned with the product requirement.

Devin compared with other coding agents
| Product | Best fit | How it differs from Devin |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | Teams centered on GitHub that want IDE, pull-request, and repository-native assistance | More tightly integrated with an existing GitHub workflow; generally an assistant and agent suite rather than one delegated remote engineer |
| Cursor | Developers wanting an AI-first editor and close control over edits | Editor-centric and interactive rather than primarily asynchronous delegation |
| Claude Code | Terminal-first developers who want direct repository control | Closer to a developer-controlled command-line workflow than a managed hosted environment |
| OpenAI Codex | Users already working in OpenAI’s coding-agent ecosystem | Competes in agentic coding but differs in models, integrations, user experience, and pricing |

Bottom line
Devin’s March 2024 launch mattered because it made a high-profile case for delegating multi-step software tasks to a persistent agent that could plan, use tools, execute code, debug, and report back. Cognition’s “world’s first AI software engineer” wording should remain attributed to Cognition, and its 13.86% SWE-bench result should remain tied to the 79-of-570, 45-minute evaluation—not converted into a job-replacement percentage. Devin represented an important change in software-development workflow, while requirements, architecture, security, review, and accountability remained human responsibilities.
