Codex uses TOML configuration shared across its desktop app, CLI, and IDE extension for the same host; Claude Code uses CLI setup and JSON configuration with project and user scopes. The right choice depends on the server’s transport and authentication, where the agent will run, and how you want to share configuration—not on a documented universal winner.
Set up an MCP server in Codex
Codex reads its default MCP configuration from ~/.codex/config.toml. A trusted project can also provide .codex/config.toml. The desktop app, CLI, and IDE extension share configuration for the same Codex host, so you generally do not need to add the same server separately in each of those clients.
Add a local STDIO server
Use the Codex CLI pattern below; put the server command after --:
codex mcp add <server-name> --env VAR=VALUE -- <stdio-server-command>For example, the Codex documentation shows:
codex mcp add context7 -- npx -y @upstash/context7-mcpTo inspect or authenticate a configured server, use codex mcp list or, for a server that supports OAuth, codex mcp login <server-name>. In the Codex terminal UI, /mcp shows active servers.

Configure a remote server
Codex documents STDIO and Streamable HTTP transports. In desktop or IDE settings, add a server, choose STDIO or Streamable HTTP, enter its command or URL, save, and restart the relevant client. HTTP authentication options documented by Codex include bearer tokens and OAuth, including Client ID Metadata Documents and Dynamic Client Registration. Trusted first-party servers may use ChatGPT session authentication. See the Codex MCP documentation for configuration details, tool enable/disable lists, and server-level or per-tool approval behavior.
Set up an MCP server in Claude Code
Claude Code supports CLI setup and JSON configuration. Its default local scope stores a server in the current project’s entry in ~/.claude.json. Use --scope project to create or update a project-root .mcp.json that can be shared through version control, or --scope user to make a server available across projects.

Add a remote HTTP server
claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url>Add a local STDIO server
claude mcp add --transport stdio <name> -- <command> [args...]The -- separates Claude Code options from the server command and its arguments. The official FAQ recommends restarting Claude Code and running /mcp to verify the connection.
Claude Code documents local STDIO and remote HTTP, SSE, and WebSocket connections, subject to server details. HTTP is recommended for remote services; SSE is deprecated where HTTP is available. WebSocket is intended for persistent bidirectional connections, but the documentation says it does not support OAuth or the claude mcp add --transport flag. Authentication may use headers or environment variables. Check the current Claude Code MCP documentation for syntax and version-specific behavior.

These documented differences do not establish comparative reliability, speed, security superiority, or compatibility with every server. Consult the Codex documentation, Claude Code documentation, and Claude Code user FAQ for the relevant client behavior.
Try a server documented for both clients
OpenAI’s Docs MCP is one concrete shared example. It provides read-only search and page-content access to OpenAI developer documentation; it does not call the OpenAI API on your behalf. The setup page gives these commands:

- Compatibility is server-specific. The server’s available transports, authentication flow, and exposed tools determine whether a client setup will work; a transport listed by a client does not mean every server supports it.
- Codex cloud use can differ from local use. The documentation cautions that local MCP servers and transports may not be available in cloud contexts. Check connectivity, credentials, and policy in the environment where the agent will actually run.
- Claude Code OAuth has a non-interactive limitation. Anthropic’s FAQ says servers requiring OAuth cannot prompt in non-interactive mode, and interactive approvals do not carry over. For CI or scripts, it recommends API-key authentication and MCP servers configured with environment-variable tokens.
- Claude Code transport guidance is version-sensitive. SSE is deprecated where HTTP is available, and fallback behavior can vary by version. Prefer current client and server guidance over older SSE examples.
- Review external actions and approvals. Depending on the server, connected tools may read or change external systems. Inspect the tools exposed and the client’s approval and policy settings before depending on the connection.
The official sources reviewed do not provide a controlled numerical comparison of Codex MCP and Claude Code MCP. Commands and support details can change, so verify them against the live documentation for your installed version.
