What CodeSpotlight does
CodeSpotlight draws configurable animated focus around the code you select, including selections spanning multiple lines. The product overview describes modes that use moving borders, pulses, glows, sweeps, or orbiting effects. The goal is to make the active passage stand out while someone explains code in a recording, livestream, class, or presentation.
Developer Karan Sahani described the problem behind the plugin on Product Hunt: “When someone is explaining code, the viewer doesn’t always know exactly where to look.” That is the maker’s motivation, not a measured finding about viewer comprehension.
How do I set up CodeSpotlight?
- Install the plugin. In IntelliJ IDEA, open Settings, select Plugins, then use the Marketplace tab to search for CodeSpotlight and choose Install. JetBrains says to restart the IDE if prompted. Its documentation also describes installing a downloaded plugin using Install Plugin from Disk and a local ZIP or JAR file: Manage plugins.
- Open its settings. Go to Settings → Tools → Animated Selection (CodeSpotlight), the configuration path given in the product overview.
- Configure the effect. Enable animated selection, choose an animation mode and colors, and adjust the visual controls available for that mode and tier.
- Return to the editor and select code. The plugin’s described effect appears around the selection; the overview says the selection remains a normal editor selection.
JetBrains’ installation instructions describe the general plugin workflow; they do not confirm that CodeSpotlight is currently listed in Marketplace or compatible with a particular IDE build. Check the CodeSpotlight Marketplace listing for current availability and compatibility before installing.

Does CodeSpotlight change my source code or editor behavior?
The product overview says CodeSpotlight is a visual overlay: it does not alter source files, and it preserves normal selection and editing behavior. These are the product’s descriptions rather than findings from an independent hands-on test. The plugin is intended to add emphasis to selected code, not to replace the editor’s selection or change the code being demonstrated.
Which IDEs support CodeSpotlight?
The product overview reports support for IntelliJ IDEA, Android Studio, and 13 additional IntelliJ-based products. It also reports version 1.0.1 released on September 21, 2026. Those are overview-reported details, not a live compatibility check: plugin support can change, and the Marketplace page did not expose substantive listing details here. Confirm the current supported IDEs and version requirements on the official Marketplace listing before relying on them.

Who is CodeSpotlight for?
The maker’s launch materials target programming YouTubers, tutors, instructors, course creators, livestreamers, and technical presenters. The product overview also names code demonstrations, reviews, recordings, and everyday editing as possible uses.
