For a small business handling defense-contract information, start by identifying whether the work involves Federal Contract Information (FCI), Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), or both; then check the solicitation for the CMMC level and the systems in scope. Training can help you prepare, but completing a course does not certify your company or meet a contract requirement.

Program status is date-sensitive: the DoW CIO’s About CMMC page reports that on July 13, 2026, the department suspended the Phase II requirements originally scheduled for November 10, 2026, while stating that Phase I self-assessment requirements remain in place. Check that live page and your solicitation before budgeting or making a contract decision.

How to identify the CMMC training you need

Company size alone does not determine the required CMMC level. The relevant contract and the contractor information systems used to perform it drive the requirement. Read the solicitation and identify which systems will process, store, or transmit the contract information before choosing a course or setting a readiness plan. The DFARS Subpart 204.75 and current DFARS CMMC clauses address contract requirements; follow the language that applies to your solicitation rather than inferring a level from a general program schedule.

  • FCI: Federal Contract Information is associated with Level 1 basic safeguarding.
  • CUI: Controlled Unclassified Information is associated with Level 2 protection.
  • Systems in scope: Determine which contractor information systems handle the relevant FCI or CUI. The level and applicable assessment path relate to those systems, not simply to the business as a whole.

DoW describes Level 1 as covering 15 security requirements and Level 2 as covering 110 requirements based on NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2. These are requirement counts, not estimates of training hours or evidence that a company has passed an assessment. See the DoW CIO overview for the program description.

What each CMMC level entails

Level Information focus Requirements Assessment and affirmation cadence described by DoW
Level 1 Basic safeguarding of FCI 15 security requirements Annual self-assessment and affirmation
Level 2 Protection of CUI 110 requirements based on NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2 Self-assessment every three years, with annual affirmation

These descriptions and cadences are from the DoW CIO’s About CMMC page. Verify the applicable requirement and assessment route against the current solicitation and rules; do not assume the same path applies to every contract.

Official CMMC training and self-assessment resources

Begin with DoW’s program and scoping documents

The DoW CMMC Resources & Documentation page links to the program rule, a CMMC 101 briefing, model overview, Level 1 scoping guidance and self-assessment guide, and Level 2 scoping guidance and assessment guide. Use the guide for the level in your solicitation to understand what is assessed and how to prepare.

Use the Level 1 assessment guide for assessment objectives

The CMMC Assessment Guide Level 1 explains assessment objectives and the kinds of examine, interview, and test methods that may be used, with examples. It says Level 1 aligns with FAR clause 52.204-21 and focuses on FCI. Use it alongside the Level 1 scoping material; a list of practices alone does not explain which systems belong in scope or how an objective is evaluated.

Use Level 2 resources for CUI work

For a Level 2 requirement, use the Level 2 scoping and assessment resources linked from the DoW documentation page. They are the relevant starting point for understanding the assessment objectives and the boundary of the systems handling CUI. The DoW CIO overview describes Level 2 against the 110 requirements in NIST SP 800-171 Revision 2.

Free small-business readiness and SPRS training

The DoW Office for Small Business Innovation says small-business concerns can access free cybersecurity training and readiness tools through Project Spectrum and its CMMC resource page. Treat these as preparation resources; course completion is not itself a CMMC assessment or certification.

If you need help with the reporting system rather than the security practices, the SPRS CMMC page lists vendor instructor-led training for Cyber Reports. It covers entering, editing, affirming, and deleting CMMC and NIST records. That workflow training complements, but does not replace, the applicable DoW assessment guide.

  • Level fit: Does it address the Level 1 or Level 2 path your solicitation calls for?
  • Scope coverage: Does it explain how to identify the systems and information in scope, not just recite security practices?
  • Assessment preparation: Does it explain objectives, evidence, and assessment methods in a way consistent with current official guidance?
  • Reporting workflow: Do you also need instruction for entering or affirming records in SPRS?
  • Currency and authority: Is the material consistent with current DoW guides, regulations, and the language of your solicitation?
  • Provider terms: Confirm what a course includes and whether it costs money. DoW’s small-business resource identifies free training and readiness tools; commercial course pricing and provider terms are not established by the official resources cited here.

Training does not create CMMC status

CMMC status follows the applicable assessment path and is recorded in SPRS for the contractor information systems associated with the requirement. A training certificate by itself does not establish that status or satisfy a contract clause. Before relying on a course for compliance planning, check the required level, assessment route, current affirmation, and any subcontract flowdown obligation in the solicitation, current rules, and SPRS. The governing contract provisions and clauses are addressed in DFARS Subpart 204.75 and the current CMMC clauses.

Check the current program status before acting

The DoW CIO page reports a July 13, 2026 announcement suspending Phase II requirements originally scheduled for November 10, 2026, alongside the statement: “All Phase I self-assessment requirements remain firmly in place.” Because this is a dated program update, it should not be treated as a permanent schedule or as a substitute for contract-specific language. Recheck the live DoW CIO page, the applicable DFARS text, and the solicitation before committing funds or deciding which assessment to pursue.
