A blank Cloudinary screenshot can mean two different things: URL2PNG returned a blank or failed capture, or a webpage’s Cloudinary image element has an empty src because responsive-image JavaScript has not populated it. Check the actual request’s HTTP status and X-Cld-Error response header first; then follow the branch that matches what is blank.
First, identify what is blank
- The image request or screenshot file is blank: Check its HTTP status, response headers, and whether the returned bytes form a valid image. For a URL2PNG capture, also open the public target URL directly and compare its rendered content.
- The page shows an empty image element: Inspect the element’s
srcanddata-src. In Cloudinary’s responsive-image workflow, the actual URL may be held indata-srcuntil the responsive JavaScript runs. - The screenshot captures a blank webpage: Determine whether the target page itself is blank or incomplete when opened directly. A successful screenshot request does not establish that the target rendered as intended.
Check the HTTP response and Cloudinary error header
In the browser, open Developer Tools, select Network, reload the page, and select the Cloudinary request. Record its status and inspect the response headers for X-Cld-Error. Cloudinary recommends this header to diagnose transformation-delivery problems; its troubleshooting documentation was last updated September 9, 2026: Troubleshooting Image Transformation Errors.
A blank appearance alone does not identify the cause. Cloudinary documentation says, “A 400 – Bad Request error is returned when the delivery URL is invalid.” Follow the specific response and error rather than treating every blank result as a signing problem.
Fix URL2PNG access and signing problems
Cloudinary’s URL2PNG add-on generates screenshots of public websites using the url2png delivery type. The add-on must be registered. By default, delivery URLs that use it must be signed or eagerly generated; Cloudinary documents an account setting to allow unsigned add-on transformations. Choose the access route that fits your workflow

If the response indicates a signature or authorization problem, check that URL2PNG is registered, the URL is signed or eagerly generated as required, and the account setting allows the requested access mode. For private or authenticated assets, check the delivery type and signature requirements separately: authenticated assets cannot be transformed on the fly, and eagerly derived versions need their own signatures. Correct malformed transformations and missing assets
Cloudinary identifies invalid syntax or parameter values, conflicting options, unsupported features, missing base or overlay assets, and signature or access restrictions as possible causes of transformation delivery errors. If the response is a 400 or names a transformation error, check:

- Numeric values and parameter syntax. Cloudinary documents invalid width values as an example.
- Whether the options are supported together; its examples include incompatible
g_autocombinations. - The order and components of the delivery URL.
- Whether the public ID, resource type, and folder path identify an existing asset, including any referenced overlay.
- Whether the asset is private or authenticated and therefore requires the appropriate delivery method and signature.
Use the precise message in X-Cld-Error to narrow the fix. Cloudinary’s transformation troubleshooting guide describes using its error inspector and, for qualifying accounts, Console error reports.
Initialize Cloudinary responsive images
If the network request succeeds but the visible image is empty, inspect the rendered <img> element in Developer Tools. A blank src alongside a populated data-src can be intentional before the responsive-image library runs.

- Check whether
data-srccontains the expected Cloudinary URL. - Confirm the intended responsive-image library loaded successfully and in the correct order.
- Verify that the page calls the library’s responsive method after the relevant elements are present.
- Check that the image has a usable container width so the responsive workflow can select an appropriate source.
Cloudinary documents its responsive-image workflow at Responsive images. If src and data-src are both empty, check how the element is rendered and whether its markup receives the expected Cloudinary URL.
Separate a URL2PNG capture issue from image delivery
If Cloudinary returns a valid image but the screenshot content is blank or incomplete, investigate the public target page separately from transformation delivery. URL2PNG supports viewport, user-agent, and delay options; test relevant settings and compare the result with opening the target URL directly. Those options are diagnostic levers, not proof of a specific cause, and Cloudinary’s documentation does not establish one universal fix for blank rendered content.

When the issue remains unclear, keep the URL with signatures or tokens removed, the HTTP status and response headers, and the relevant src and data-src values. Do not share API secrets or live access tokens.
