To convert a public web page to PDF with CloudConvert API v2 in Node.js, create a capture-website task with the page URL and output_format: "pdf", then pass its result to an export/url task. What the CloudConvert workflow does
The capture-website operation captures a website as a PDF or image. For this tutorial, it receives a publicly reachable URL and requests PDF output. The export/url task then makes the resulting file available through a downloadable URL. CloudConvert documents the operation and its parameters in its Capture Website API reference.
The example below uses CloudConvert’s Node.js SDK and API v2. The official API documentation lists a Node.js SDK; check the current package documentation for import syntax and SDK details, which can change. See the API introduction.
Prerequisites and API key handling
- A Node.js project with the CloudConvert SDK installed. Confirm the current installation instructions and supported import style in CloudConvert’s API documentation.
- A CloudConvert API key with the
task.writescope, which the Jobs reference identifies as required for creating jobs. - A target page URL that CloudConvert can access. This example is for a public website URL, not a page that depends on your browser’s logged-in session.
Keep the API key on the server. Load it from an environment variable such as CLOUDCONVERT_API_KEY; do not put it in browser-side JavaScript or commit it to source control.

Create a capture job and export the PDF
This example creates a job with two named tasks: capture the web page as PDF, then export that task’s output as a URL. It waits for completion to keep the example straightforward.

Use webhooks for production completion handling
CloudConvert jobs are asynchronous by default, and its documentation recommends webhooks for completion notifications. Waiting in the same request can be unsuitable for long-running jobs. In a production service, create the job, return or persist its ID, and let a configured webhook notify your application when processing is complete. Then read the export task’s result and use the returned URL or send output to an object-storage integration if that better suits your workflow.

Webhook configuration and event handling depend on your application. Follow the current Jobs reference for job behavior and webhook setup rather than assuming a synchronous wait is appropriate for every request.

Capture task parameters
The capture-website reference documents optional engine selection, engine version, filename, and timeout parameters in addition to the URL and output format. Choose values based on the current reference and your job’s needs. Do not assume a particular rendering result or fidelity beyond what the selected engine and current documentation establish.

URL input versus HTML input
For capturing a web page by address, capture-website is the documented operation. CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF page also describes accepting either a URL or an HTML file, but a URL capture job is the direct fit when the input is a live webpage.
Handling the exported file
The export/url task exposes the result through a downloadable URL. If your application needs output stored in an object store rather than fetched from an export URL, CloudConvert also describes storage integrations. Select the output path that fits your retention and access requirements; consult the current quickstart and product documentation for setup details.

Troubleshooting common problems
- Authorization or job creation fails: confirm that the server is loading the intended API key and that its bearer token has the
task.writescope required by the Jobs reference. - The export task cannot find its input: check that
input: 'capture-page'exactly matches the capture task key undertasks. - The job is still running when your request times out: do not make a long-running job depend on a request that must return immediately. Use CloudConvert’s asynchronous job flow and a configured webhook for completion.
- The PDF does not reflect the page you expected: verify the target URL is publicly accessible to the service, and check the selected engine and its supported parameters in the current capture operation reference. The documented inputs alone do not guarantee a particular page rendering or fidelity.
- The SDK import or result inspection differs from the example: SDK details can change. Check the currently installed package’s documentation and the official quickstart; the snippet is based on documented methods, not an execution test.
Cost and operational considerations
CloudConvert’s HTML-to-PDF product page advertised a starting price of $0.008 per file when accessed on October 3, 2026. This is a vendor price claim, may change, and should not be treated as a guaranteed price for every capture workflow. Check the live HTML-to-PDF page for current pricing and applicability.
For reliability, treat capture as an asynchronous job, retain the job ID for status checks or webhook correlation, and handle failed or delayed jobs in your application. The documentation does not establish a universal completion time or page-rendering fidelity, so avoid promising either to downstream users.
