There is no universal cost winner. A GPU instance can encode faster, but the right comparison is the total cost to produce or sustain the exact stream you need—not the machine’s hourly price by itself. Test your own video and settings on candidate machines, then include runtime, storage, data transfer, and any idle time.

What you are paying to do

For a prerecorded YouTube stream, a server may read a video file and encode it into one outgoing live feed. That is separate from YouTube’s processing after ingest: YouTube says it automatically transcodes a received live stream into multiple formats for viewers. Unless your production has a specific need to create multiple renditions before sending, do not assume your server must build a full resolution ladder. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe the ingest requirements and recommendations.

A GPU may reduce the time or compute needed for encoding, but that does not guarantee a lower bill. The result depends on whether the machine can meet your real-time requirement, the quality you consider acceptable, the number of concurrent streams, and the full price for the hours it runs.

What the AWS benchmark can—and cannot—tell you

AWS’s January 4, 2024 Compute Blog benchmark, “Optimizing video encoding with FFmpeg using NVIDIA GPU-based Amazon EC2 instances,” compared CPU x264/x265 with NVIDIA NVENC using FFmpeg 6.0. Its live-streaming scenario encoded to 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, and 160p. AWS reported that a g4dn.xlarge sustained up to four parallel encodings in that tested scenario, while CPU instances sustained at most one parallel stream in the tested configuration. The post gave example hourly prices of $0.587 for g4dn.xlarge and $2.1888 for c6i.12xlarge, which could nearly sustain three simultaneous streams in its example.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Those are AWS-published benchmark results and benchmark-era example prices, not independently reproduced measurements, current price quotes, or a forecast for one particular prerecorded file. They show why a GPU is worth testing when throughput or concurrency matters; they do not prove it is cheaper for a single stream. AWS also notes that CPU encoding can suit cases where output file size is critical. Hardware encoding should not be treated as an automatic quality-equivalent replacement for software encoding. Read the AWS benchmark and its test context.

Calculate cost per streamed hour

Use the candidate’s current hourly price for the region and pricing model you would actually buy. For a job that takes a measurable amount of time to encode, compute cost is hourly price multiplied by runtime. For a live feed that must run at real-time pace, calculate the machine cost for the hours it must stay running. Normalize the result to one streamed hour or one completed source-video hour, and add applicable storage and network charges.

  1. Choose the actual workload. Use the same source file, duration, codec, resolution, frame rate, target quality or bitrate, audio, FFmpeg version, and filters on each candidate.
  2. Measure runtime or real-time capacity. Record whether the machine can keep the outgoing feed at real-time pace, and how long a finite encode takes. Include setup, restart, and monitoring needs in your operating plan.
  3. Check output quality. Compare the outputs against the same quality requirement. A faster encode is not a saving if the result is not acceptable.
  4. Price the actual schedule. Multiply the current regional hourly rate by billable runtime, then add relevant storage and transfer charges. Include idle periods if the machine remains on between streams.
  5. Compare equivalent outcomes. Report cost per streamed hour or completed source-video hour, plus concurrent stream capacity if you need more than one.

AWS’s pricing page explains that price depends on instance configuration and operating system, and that charges such as EBS optimization or data transfer may be additional. Rates also vary with region and pricing model, so check the current quote for your configuration rather than carrying over benchmark-era numbers. AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing.

Run a fair CPU-versus-GPU test

Test a representative section with motion and audio, not only a static or unusually easy passage. Check that the output remains at real-time pace without dropped frames, assess quality and stability, and estimate the bill for the full schedule. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, monitoring stream health, and leaving upload bitrate headroom. YouTube’s live encoder settings and recommendations.

For GPU encoding, NVIDIA documents FFmpeg paths using NVENC for encoding and NVDEC for decoding, including GPU-side scaling examples. This requires compatible hardware, drivers, and an FFmpeg build enabled for NVIDIA acceleration; the setup dependency is part of the practical comparison. NVIDIA FFmpeg documentation.

Configure the outgoing YouTube feed

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm the currently available options and target settings in your Live Control Room for the channel and workflow; these recommendations do not specify what your source file should be. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Live encoder settings.

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
  2. Configure the encoder to send to that URL using the key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to the channel’s event.
  3. Set the chosen codec, frame rate, constant bitrate, and keyframe interval in the encoder, following YouTube’s current requirements for the selected ingest setup.
  4. Start a test feed, monitor stream health, and confirm that the server keeps pace before relying on it for a long-running broadcast.

YouTube’s verified-encoder listing describes AJA’s PlayToStream as supporting scheduled prerecorded media sent directly to YouTube Live without a computer. That confirms a prerecorded-media workflow exists, but it does not establish that the hardware is a cost-effective choice for a rented GPU-versus-CPU comparison. YouTube verified encoders.

Other cost and operations factors

  • Runtime pattern: A continuously running server may incur substantial idle-time cost; a short-lived encode job has different economics.
  • Concurrency: If you need several simultaneous encodes, compare cost per stream at that concurrency rather than the cheapest single-instance hourly rate.
  • Storage and transfer: Include source-file storage, output or cache storage, and network charges that apply to moving or sending the video.
  • Quality and file size: CPU and GPU encoders may behave differently at the same nominal settings. Validate the actual output before treating faster throughput as equivalent.
  • Maintenance: GPU drivers, supported hardware, FFmpeg build options, restarts, and monitoring add operator effort that a machine-rate comparison does not capture.

AWS also offers VT1 video-transcoding instances and advertises up to 30% lower cost per stream than selected G4dn instances and up to 60% lower than selected C5 instances for its stated live-encoding scenarios. These are AWS vendor claims tied to those workloads, not guaranteed savings for a single prerecorded YouTube stream. AWS VT1 instance information.
