Survey findings pointed to growing use of multiple clouds and strong interest in hybrid cloud, while organizations were still working through workload placement, security, spending, governance, and skills. The numbers below come from separate vendor-commissioned surveys and an analyst report summary, not a single census of all enterprises.
What enterprise cloud adoption looked like in 2018
Forrester’s October 2018 public summary said enterprise cloud adoption had accelerated in 2017 and was expected to continue growing through 2020. It did not publish detailed adoption figures on the summary page, so it supports the direction of change, not a precise market-wide rate. Forrester’s report summary
Other surveys show why “adoption” needs qualification: they asked different questions of different groups. In a Nutanix-commissioned 2018 survey conducted by Vanson Bourne, approximately 2,300 IT decision-makers across industries, organization sizes, and the Americas, EMEA, and APJ were surveyed. Ninety-one percent called hybrid cloud the ideal IT model, but only 18% said their organization had that model at the time. An ideal preference is not the same as deployment. Nutanix defined hybrid cloud as using at least one private cloud and at least one public-cloud service, with some integration between them. Nutanix’s survey announcement
Why multi-cloud and hybrid cloud gained attention
RightScale’s January 2018 State of the Cloud survey included 997 technology professionals. Respondents reported running applications in an average of 3.1 clouds and experimenting with 1.7 more, or 4.8 in total. This is a snapshot of survey respondents’ reported use, not a count of providers used by every enterprise. RightScale’s 2018 survey release

In that same survey, AWS adoption was 64% and Azure adoption 45% among all respondents; among enterprise respondents, the figures were 68% for AWS and 58% for Azure. These percentages describe respondents reporting adoption, not cloud-provider market share.
Hybrid cloud appealed for more than its cost profile. In Nutanix’s 2018 survey, respondents’ leading primary benefits were interoperability between cloud types (23%) and the ability to move applications across clouds (16%). Cost (6%) and security (5%) ranked lower as primary benefits. These responses suggest that integration and portability were central to the appeal, even as security remained a major factor in choosing where a workload should run.

How enterprises weighed workload placement
Nutanix respondents identified data security and regulatory compliance as the top workload-placement factor (71%). Other reported factors were performance (62%), ease of management (53%), and cost (52%). These are reported factors from the Nutanix-commissioned 2018 survey, not universal priorities for every organization.
The practical choice was therefore workload-specific. A regulated or sensitive application could favor an environment with suitable controls and oversight; a performance-critical application might need a different placement; and an organization seeking portability had to consider whether its tools and architecture could support movement between environments. Hybrid cloud did not mean that every application moved freely or that integration happened automatically.

What made adoption difficult
Security and compliance
In RightScale’s 2018 survey, 77% of respondents cited security as a cloud challenge. That finding sits alongside Nutanix’s result that security and regulatory compliance were the most frequently cited workload-placement factor. Cloud deployment did not remove the need to decide how data, access, and regulatory obligations would be managed.
Spend control
RightScale reported that 76% of respondents considered cloud-spend management a challenge. Its release also said 35% of cloud spend was wasted, quoting RightScale CEO Michael Crandell. Separately, Nutanix reported that among public-cloud users in its survey, 6% came in under budget and 35% overspent. These findings come from different surveys and populations; they should not be combined into a single estimate of enterprise cloud waste or budget performance.

Governance and staffing
RightScale found that 57% of enterprise respondents had a central cloud team or center of excellence, while another 24% planned to establish one. Nutanix reported that 54% of its respondents cited difficulty retaining hybrid-cloud talent as part of the hybrid IT talent challenge. Together, these results show that cloud adoption involved operating-model changes as well as technology decisions: organizations needed people and processes to coordinate platforms, skills, and policy.

The surveys are useful signals, but they are not interchangeable. RightScale surveyed 997 technology professionals in January 2018; Nutanix commissioned Vanson Bourne to survey approximately 2,300 IT decision-makers. Their populations, questions, definitions, and sponsors differed. Forrester’s public page provides a broad adoption trend but not detailed figures. Accordingly, the figures here describe what each survey’s respondents reported, not a harmonized measure of all enterprise cloud adoption.

Nutanix chief marketing officer Ben Gibson framed the shift as a response to demand for “stronger application mobility and interoperability.” That is a vendor executive’s interpretation of the survey, rather than an independent survey result. The underlying pattern is clearer when the evidence is kept distinct: adoption was expanding; multi-cloud use was already reported; hybrid cloud was widely considered desirable; and organizations still faced implementation and operating challenges.
