Cloud computing architecture is the plan for how cloud components work together to deliver an application or other workload. It organizes resources such as compute, storage, networking, software, and security; it is not the infrastructure itself. A sound design connects the user-facing client to backend services and plans how the workload will be managed, secured, monitored, and recovered.
What cloud computing architecture means
Cloud architecture describes the components of a cloud solution and the way they interact. AWS summarizes the idea as “how components work together in a workload” in its Well-Architected Framework. The infrastructure—such as servers, storage, and networks—is among the resources the architecture organizes.
There is no single required cloud stack. Components and boundaries vary by workload and provider, so it is more useful to understand each component’s role than to treat one vendor’s diagram as a universal blueprint.
What are the components of cloud architecture?
A useful functional model separates the parts that users interact with from the backend that processes their requests. Google’s cloud architecture explainer groups the broad picture into frontend, backend, service model, and network.

Frontend: the user’s point of access
The frontend includes the user interface, client-side software, and the device or network a person uses to access the cloud service. A browser or mobile app is often the visible part, but the frontend also depends on the client software and connection needed to send requests and display responses.
Backend: applications and resources
The backend performs the work requested by the user. Depending on the design, it can include applications and services, compute, storage, runtime environments, virtualization, middleware, management tools, and security controls. Middleware and platform services can connect application components or route work to the resources that perform it.

Network: the path between components
The network carries requests and responses between clients and cloud services, and may connect cloud environments to one another or to an organization’s on-premises systems. Network design must account for internet access, private or dedicated connections where needed, and connectivity between environments. AWS’s VPC connectivity guidance outlines these connection patterns.
Management and security: operating the design
A working architecture also needs ways to manage resources, control access, observe system health, and respond to failures. Identity and access controls, account governance, monitoring, and recovery planning are not extras to bolt on after deployment; they shape how the components can be operated safely and reliably.

How does cloud computing architecture work?
At a basic level, a client sends a request through a network to a cloud service. Backend software and middleware route or perform the requested task using the available platform or infrastructure. The service then sends a response back to the client.
- The client makes a request. A user action in a browser, app, or other client produces a request for data or a service.
- The network carries it to the cloud. Internet or configured private connectivity transports the request to the relevant service.
- Backend components process it. Application logic, middleware, and platform services direct the work to compute, storage, or other resources.
- The service returns a response. The result travels back through the network for the client to display or use.
Real systems need more than this request path. They also need monitoring and operational controls, security at appropriate layers, and recovery arrangements for failures. The architecture defines how those functions fit with the workload rather than assuming that a provider’s infrastructure handles every responsibility.

Service models are different from deployment models
Cloud service models describe what the provider supplies and how much of the stack the customer manages. Deployment models describe where the cloud environment is arranged and who uses it. These are separate choices: an organization can combine a service model with a deployment arrangement that suits its workload.

| Model | What it describes | Typical responsibility balance |
|---|---|---|
| IaaS | On-demand infrastructure such as compute, storage, networking, and virtualization. | Comparatively high customer control over the resources and their configuration. |
| PaaS | A platform with hardware and software resources to build and run applications. | The provider manages more of the underlying infrastructure, while the customer focuses more on applications and data. |
| SaaS | A complete application stack delivered as a service. | The provider maintains the application stack; the customer uses and configures the application within its available controls. |
These are broad distinctions, not a guarantee that every provider draws the responsibility boundary in exactly the same way. Google’s cloud computing overview describes the service models and their general scope.

Deployment arrangements
- Public cloud: Cloud resources are owned and operated by a provider and commonly serve multiple customers, with logical separation between them.
- Private cloud: A cloud environment is dedicated to one organization. It can provide greater control, but also brings added responsibility, expertise, and cost.
- Hybrid cloud: Public and private environments are combined so workloads can be placed according to their requirements.
- Multi-cloud: An organization uses services from more than one cloud provider. This is not another name for hybrid cloud; a multi-cloud design may or may not include a private environment.
How to choose an architecture for a workload
There is no best arrangement for every application. Start with the workload’s constraints and compare the trade-offs rather than choosing a model because it is popular.
- Control and responsibility: Decide how much infrastructure and operational work the organization wants to manage. More control can also mean more work and expertise are required.
- Data and compliance: Identify applicable data-residency, privacy, and regulatory requirements before selecting where data and processing will live.
- Latency and data processing: Some workloads may need data or processing to remain close to users, devices, or existing systems. AWS notes that retaining systems on premises can be appropriate for latency, data-processing, or data-residency needs in its architecture guidance.
- Reliability and recovery: Determine the level of resilience the workload requires and how it should recover from component, network, or site failures.
- Performance and portability: Consider whether the design meets workload performance needs and how difficult it would be to move applications or data between environments.
- Management effort and cost over time: Account for ongoing operations and consumption, not only initial setup or infrastructure purchases.
For a practical design process, document the architecture and important decisions, keep the design understandable, and plan for change. Use decoupled components when they help teams change or scale parts of a system independently. Define identity, network connectivity, DNS, account governance, tagging, observability, and recovery as part of the design. Provider guidance can help identify questions, but it must be applied to the workload’s business and regulatory context.
What are the benefits and limitations of cloud architecture?
Cloud architecture can make capacity and provisioning more flexible, but those possibilities depend on how a workload is designed and run.
- Flexible scaling: Capacity can be adjusted with demand, which may reduce the need to buy for peak capacity in advance.
- Less upfront infrastructure procurement: Using provider resources can avoid some initial purchases of infrastructure, though it does not eliminate ongoing costs.
- Faster provisioning: Teams may be able to provision resources more quickly than through traditional procurement processes.
- Access to managed capabilities: Providers offer services that can reduce the amount of infrastructure a team must build and maintain itself.
These benefits are not automatic guarantees of lower total cost, continuous availability, or stronger security. Cloud cost depends on workload and consumption, while reliability and security require deliberate architecture and operation.
Provider frameworks offer useful review lenses rather than a single mandatory industry standard. Google’s Google Cloud Well-Architected Framework organizes guidance around operational excellence, security, privacy and compliance, reliability, cost optimization, performance optimization, and sustainability. AWS’s Well-Architected Framework uses six pillars: operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability.
