Linux users can back up to the cloud with either an integrated service and Linux client, such as IDrive, or a dedicated backup program connected to cloud object storage, such as Restic with Backblaze B2. The first approach brings the client and storage together; the second offers more control but leaves configuration, credentials, scheduling, retention, and billing for you to manage. The right choice depends on how you want to operate backups and restore files—not just on the advertised storage price.
Two ways to back up Linux to the cloud
Integrated backup service
A managed service supplies a Linux client and cloud destination as one offering. IDrive documents a Linux desktop client for immediate or scheduled backups, restores, and remote management through a web console. This can reduce the number of separate systems to configure, although you still need to check which Linux distributions and plans are supported.
Backup software plus object storage
With this model, you select a backup client and a separate storage provider. Backblaze’s Linux guidance lists tools including Restic, Duplicity, Duplicati, MSP360, qBackup, GoodSync, HashBackup, and Duplicacy. The client determines much of the backup and restore workflow; the storage provider determines where data resides and how storage, transactions, and downloads are billed. Backblaze’s [Linux options and integration directory](https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-storage/integrations) documents this ecosystem.
How the main options compare
| Option | Product shape and workflow | Protection and restore details established by the sources | Cost and operational responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| IDrive Linux | Integrated service with a Linux desktop client, scheduled or immediate backup, and web-console management, according to IDrive. | IDrive states that it supports incremental backup, continuous data protection, restores, default or user-defined private-key AES-256 encryption, and recovery of up to 30 previous file versions. These are vendor-stated capabilities. | Check current plan terms and Linux distribution support. Keep any user-defined private key safe; losing it may prevent access to encrypted backup data. |
| Restic with Backblaze B2 | Separate, command-line-oriented backup software and object storage. Backblaze documents Restic’s connection to B2 through its S3-compatible API. | Restic uses snapshots and block-level deduplication; Backblaze describes encrypted, deduplicated chunks and backups of changed data. Restic can restore from snapshots, and mounting snapshots as a restore option requires FUSE. | You manage repository configuration, credentials, scheduling, retention, and restore testing. B2 storage and download charges are separate from the backup client. |
| Duplicity with Backblaze B2 | Separate backup software and object storage, with a guide showing a Duplicity-to-B2 workflow and an example folder restore. | Backblaze’s guide describes encryption, compression, and retention options. It recommends Duplicity 0.8.08 or later for the B2 pairing in that guide; the guide was published July 24, 2023, so check current commands and compatibility. | You must configure and maintain the client and storage account separately. Confirm current licensing and B2 charges before choosing. |
| Duplicati with Backblaze B2 | Separate backup software and object storage. Backblaze lists Duplicati as open-source software. | Backblaze lists incremental support and AES-256 encryption for Duplicati. The cited integration information does not establish a universal retention or deletion-recovery policy for every configuration. | Check the client’s current retention settings and the storage provider’s current fees; configure and test restores yourself. |
The table reflects features documented by the vendors, not a head-to-head test. The cited materials do not provide a complete, current Linux distribution, architecture, or version matrix for these options, nor a comparable restore-speed test.

What each option asks you to manage
Restic and B2: control with command-line responsibility
Backblaze’s Restic integration guide describes using B2’s S3-compatible API and covers bucket and application-key setup. Backblaze says a newly created application key is shown only once, so save it securely when you create it. A lost or exposed credential can put backup access at risk.
Restic is a reasonable candidate if you are comfortable configuring a command-line workflow and keeping it reliable over time. You need to choose what to back up, set up the repository and credentials, schedule jobs, decide how snapshots are retained, monitor failures, and know how to restore. FUSE is required to mount snapshots for one restore method; many Linux distributions include it, but it may need to be installed separately.

Duplicity and B2: check guide age and commands
Backblaze’s Duplicity-to-B2 guide includes an example folder restore and describes encryption, compression, and retention options. Because the guide dates to July 24, 2023, treat its version recommendation and commands as a starting point rather than proof of current compatibility. Verify the current Duplicity and B2 documentation before relying on a production backup.
Duplicati and B2: distinguish backup from sync
Backblaze lists Duplicati as an open-source option with incremental support and AES-256 encryption in its integration directory. Review the settings you will actually use, especially what is retained and how deleted or changed files can be recovered. A copying or synchronization tool is not automatically a versioned backup: rclone, for example, is documented for copying, syncing, and mounting buckets, but that alone does not establish point-in-time recovery or retention.

IDrive Linux: an integrated client, with terms to verify
IDrive’s Linux backup support page describes a desktop client for immediate and scheduled backups, restores, and remote management through its web console. It also states that an account can back up multiple Linux computers, and lists incremental backup, continuous data protection, and recovery of up to 30 previous file versions. Confirm the current plan limits and distribution compatibility directly with IDrive; the stated version limit is the vendor’s claim, not an independent test.
Encryption, retention, and recovery deserve equal attention
Know who controls the keys
For IDrive, the cited Linux support page says encryption uses AES-256 and offers a default or user-defined private key. If you choose a key that only you control, keep a secure recovery copy: cloud storage cannot decrypt a backup for which the necessary key is unavailable.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
With a separate client and storage provider, check the backup software’s encryption configuration and where its keys or passwords are stored. The provider’s storage security and the backup client’s encryption are related but separate decisions. A credential for accessing a bucket is not necessarily the key that decrypts the backup.
Check what survives deletion or ransomware
Before enabling a job, establish whether it keeps older versions or snapshots, how long those copies remain, and what happens when a source file is deleted or encrypted by malware. Retention depends on the selected product and configuration; the cited sources do not establish one universal deletion or ransomware-recovery policy across all the tools. A backup that mirrors deletions without keeping recoverable history may not protect against accidental deletion.

Test the restore path
A successful upload does not prove that you can recover what you need. Restore a few files to a separate location, confirm they open, and practice the steps for restoring a larger set. Keep the required keys and account credentials accessible without storing them only on the machine being backed up. Also arrange a way to notice failed or overdue jobs; an unattended schedule is not useful if failures go unseen.

Backblaze’s integration FAQ states a B2 storage price of $6.95 per TB per month, free uploads, downloads free up to three times average monthly storage, and $0.01 per GB beyond that download threshold. These are the figures on the [Backblaze integration directory](https://www.backblaze.com/cloud-storage/integrations), accessed October 5, 2026; pricing can change, so verify the current terms before budgeting.
For a practical estimate, account for the amount of data retained, not just the size of the current source folder. Older snapshots and versions can add to stored data, while large restores may cross the stated download allowance. The cited price information does not provide a complete estimate for every transaction, client license, or workload, so check the current provider and software terms for your specific setup.
Quick Recap
Choose by workflow, then validate with a small backup
- Prefer a desktop client and centralized management: consider an integrated option such as IDrive, after confirming that your distribution and plan are supported.
- Prefer a command-line workflow and control over client and destination: consider Restic with B2, but be prepared to maintain credentials, scheduling, retention, and restore procedures.
- Already use a particular backup client: check its current B2 integration, encryption, version retention, and restore workflow before moving important data.
- Considering a sync tool: verify how it handles historical versions and deletion recovery; copying files to a bucket alone does not establish a recoverable backup history.
- Confirm compatibility: check the current client documentation for your Linux distribution and version, and verify any required components such as FUSE for Restic snapshot mounting.
- Define the recovery target: list the folders to protect, how far back you need to recover, and how quickly you expect to restore. Configure retention to match that need.
- Secure access: store account credentials and encryption keys in a protected location separate from the backed-up machine. For B2, save a newly created application key securely when it is displayed.
- Run a limited backup: start with a small set of noncritical files and confirm that the job completes and reports status in a place you will check.
- Restore and verify: recover files to a different directory or machine, confirm that they are intact, and record the steps and dependencies needed to repeat the restore.
- Review cost and retention: estimate stored versions and likely download volume against current provider terms, then revisit the configuration periodically.
