Clonezilla is still one of the strongest free choices for cloning or imaging a drive—if you are comfortable booting into a text-based environment and can work with its offline, whole-disk workflow. It is not the best fit when you need to clone a running system, browse an image to recover one file, or have a graphical interface guide you. Clonezilla SE development dates to 2004, according to the project; that is not the same as a verified first public release date.

Is Clonezilla still the best free way to clone a drive?

There is no evidence that establishes one tool as universally “the best.” Clonezilla is a particularly capable free and open-source option for offline disk and partition imaging or direct cloning. It makes most sense if your priorities are software cost, broad filesystem and partition-layout support, and the ability to save an image or copy a drive without relying on a desktop GUI.

The trade-off is its workflow: you boot a separate Clonezilla environment, navigate menus, and ensure the source partition is unmounted. If you need a graphical interface, online cloning, or convenient single-file recovery from an image, those requirements point elsewhere.

When Clonezilla is a good fit

  • You want a free, GPLv2-licensed tool for a full disk or partition image, or a direct disk-to-disk clone.
  • You can boot from USB, CD/DVD, PXE, or another supported boot device and follow a menu-driven process.
  • You can take the source partition offline and have a destination with enough capacity for the partitions being copied.

When to consider another workflow

  • You need to clone a system while it is running: Clonezilla’s official overview says online imaging and cloning are not implemented.
  • You want to browse an image and restore just one file: Clonezilla images cannot be directly explored or mounted for that purpose.
  • You want a graphical interface rather than a text-based menu.

What does “over 20 years old” mean?

The Clonezilla project says its Server Edition (Clonezilla SE) “has been developed from 2004.” That supports describing the project’s server-edition development history as more than 20 years old; it does not establish 2004 as the first public release date for Clonezilla or Clonezilla Live. The project describes Clonezilla Live as the edition for one machine, while its server editions are intended for larger deployments. Clonezilla Live overview

What Clonezilla does—and what it supports

Clonezilla can save and restore disk or partition images, as well as clone directly from one disk to another. The project lists Clonezilla Live for individual machines, Clonezilla lite server, and Clonezilla SE for larger deployments. Clonezilla Live requires an x86 or x86-64 processor, 196 MB of RAM according to the project’s undated minimum-requirements listing, and a boot device such as USB, CD/DVD, PXE, or a hard drive. That memory figure is a published minimum, not a recommendation for a modern general-purpose computer. Clonezilla project overview

Filesystem handling is not identical for every format. The project says Clonezilla uses Partclone to save and restore used blocks on supported filesystems; for unsupported filesystems, it falls back to sector-by-sector copying with dd. Its listed support includes Linux filesystems, Windows FAT, NTFS and exFAT, macOS HFS+ and APFS, BSD UFS, Minix, and VMware VMFS3/VMFS5. The project marks Btrfs as testing. It also lists LVM2, LUKS, and both MBR and GPT partitioning. Check the current project documentation for your specific filesystem and layout rather than assuming every listed format has the same level of support. Clonezilla project overview

How to clone a drive with Clonezilla Live

Clonezilla Live runs from bootable media, such as a prepared USB drive. Its official usage guide covers disk-to-disk cloning as well as saving and restoring images. The source partition must be unmounted, so this is an offline operation—not a clone of an actively mounted system partition while you continue using it. Clonezilla Live documentation

  1. Prepare and boot Clonezilla Live media. Create or prepare boot media, then boot the computer from it. If the machine starts its usual operating system instead, use its firmware boot menu or boot-order settings to select the Clonezilla device.
  2. Choose the disk-to-disk workflow. Follow the Clonezilla Live menus for cloning directly from a source disk to a target disk. For an image-based backup instead, choose the image-saving workflow and a suitable storage location.
  3. Identify source and destination carefully. Confirm which disk contains the data you want to keep and which is the target. The clone or restore writes to the destination; selecting the wrong disk can overwrite the wrong data.
  4. Check an image before restoring it. For image-based recovery, use Clonezilla’s image-integrity check before restoring. The project recommends checking because without it you may not know whether the image is damaged.
  5. Run the operation and verify the result. Allow the clone or restore to finish before relying on the destination. Keep a separate backup of important files; a cloning operation is not a substitute for an independent backup.

Will cloning to a larger drive use all its space?

Not automatically. Clonezilla’s documented example copies a 20 GB disk to a 60 GB disk with the original partition sizes unchanged, leaving unused capacity on both source and target in that example. The guide points to proportional partition-table creation as an option for allocating more of the larger destination to partitions. A successful clone and an expanded partition layout are separate outcomes: check the selected sizing option and the resulting layout before assuming the operating system can use the entire drive. • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Capacity must also be sufficient at the partition level. Clonezilla’s overview says destination partitions must be equal to or larger than their source counterparts. A larger total drive does not by itself guarantee that every destination partition meets this requirement if the target’s partition layout differs.

What are Clonezilla’s main limitations?

  • No online cloning: the source partition has to be unmounted while it is imaged or cloned.
  • No incremental or differential backup: the project says these backup modes are not implemented.
  • No direct single-file browsing: Clonezilla images cannot be directly explored or mounted to retrieve an individual file.
  • Destination partition sizing matters: each target partition must be at least as large as its source counterpart.
  • The workflow is menu-driven: Clonezilla Live boots into a dedicated environment rather than offering a standard desktop-style cloning interface.

These constraints make Clonezilla more suitable for planned, offline disk work than for continuous backup or quick file-level recovery.

Is Rescuezilla a better choice if you want a GUI?

Rescuezilla is worth considering if Clonezilla’s menu workflow is a barrier. Rescuezilla describes itself as graphical and says it can restore Clonezilla images and vice versa; it also advertises image browsing. Those are Rescuezilla’s own compatibility and feature claims, not independent comparative tests of reliability, speed, or ease of use. Confirm current compatibility for the image and system you plan to use. Rescuezilla features

The choice comes down to what you need the software to do: Clonezilla offers an established offline imaging and cloning workflow, while Rescuezilla presents a graphical alternative with advertised image-browsing capabilities. Neither description establishes comparative performance.

Which Clonezilla version should you download?

Version information on Clonezilla’s official pages does not line up as a single build number. The stable download selector showed 3.3.3-15 when checked, while the release notes describe Clonezilla Live 3.3.3-37, based on Debian Sid as of 2026-09-13, with Linux kernel 7.1.13-1 and Partclone 0.3.50. These are entries from different official pages, not evidence that the builds are interchangeable. Use the official download selector for the current stable download rather than relying on a version number repeated elsewhere. Clonezilla downloads · Clonezilla Live release notes
