Cline is an open-source AI coding agent that can work across project files and developer tools—not just suggest code as you type. It can read and edit files, run terminal commands, use a browser, and help carry out coding tasks from natural-language instructions. You choose a model provider and how much autonomy to allow; the software is free for individual developers, but model inference may cost money.
What is Cline?
Cline describes itself as “an AI coding agent that lives in your editor and your terminal.” In practice, you give it a task in natural language and it can inspect a project, propose a plan, make changes across files, and use connected tools to help complete the work. That is a different role from inline autocomplete, which primarily suggests code while you write.
Cline is open source. Its official materials describe a product family that includes editor integrations, a CLI, a desktop offering, and an SDK for building agents and integrations. Availability and feature coverage can change, so check Cline’s current official materials for the particular application or component you plan to use. This overview reflects information available on September 29, 2026.
What can Cline do in a coding project?
Cline’s repository describes an agent that can read and write project files, run terminal commands, use a browser, and monitor outputs such as build or linter results. A request can therefore involve several steps—for example, examining related files, changing more than one of them, and checking the result—rather than producing a single code completion.

- Work across files: ask for a change that touches related parts of a project, then review the proposed differences.
- Use the terminal: let the agent run commands relevant to the task, subject to your configured approval and permissions.
- Use a browser: bring browser interaction into a task when it helps the agent inspect or work with a site.
- Check outcomes: use build, test, or linter output as feedback for a follow-up step.
- Recover from changes: the repository describes diffs, checkpoints, and undo as ways to inspect or reverse work.
These capabilities do not mean every task will be completed correctly or that a successful-looking change is verified. Review the code and run the checks that matter to your project.
How Plan and Act change the workflow
Cline’s Plan and Act workflow separates deciding what to do from carrying it out. In Plan mode, use the agent to reason about the task and its steps; in Act mode, it can execute work such as editing files or running commands. This separation can be useful when a task is broad or when you want to agree on an approach before changes begin.
- State the outcome and constraints. Explain what should change, what must remain unchanged, and any relevant conventions or acceptance checks.
- Ask for a plan when the task is uncertain or spans multiple areas. Review the proposed scope before asking Cline to act.
- Approve actions deliberately. Review file changes and understand terminal commands before allowing them to run.
- Check the result. Inspect the diff and run appropriate project checks; use their output to guide any correction.
The repository says edits and commands require approval by default, while auto-approve can enable more autonomous operation. Treat approval behavior as a configurable workflow, not a guarantee of safety: permissions, connected tools, and the consequences of a command still matter. Auto-approve is a convenience with a corresponding reduction in step-by-step control.

Where Cline runs and how it connects to tools
Cline’s official overview lists VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, JetBrains IDEs, Antigravity, and Zed, and describes Neovim support through ACP mode. The current repository also presents a CLI, a JetBrains plugin, Kanban, and an SDK. Because this list and individual capabilities can change, confirm current compatibility and availability in Cline’s own materials before choosing an installation path.
Cline also describes MCP servers and plugins as ways to connect external tools and services, including databases, APIs, and infrastructure. Those connections can expand what an agent can do, but they also expand the set of systems and data it may interact with. Before connecting a service, consider what access it grants, what actions it permits, and whether the task actually needs it.
Which model provider should you use?
Cline lets users choose among hosted model services and local runtimes. Its provider documentation lists Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, AWS Bedrock, OpenRouter, Azure, GCP Vertex, Groq, Cerebras, DeepSeek, and other OpenAI-compatible endpoints. Named local runtimes include Ollama and LM Studio. These are options documented by Cline, not a comparative rating of the providers or models.

There is no source-backed universal “best model” for Cline: the reviewed official materials do not provide a controlled comparison of model quality, speed, or productivity. Choose against your own task and constraints, and check the selected provider’s current terms and rates.
Is Cline really free?
Cline’s official pricing page says its open-source offering is free for individual developers. That is the cost of the software, not a promise that each task has no cost: AI inference can be billed by the provider based on usage, either through Cline’s model access or with credentials you bring yourself. Cline lists enterprise as custom and names centralized billing, team management, access controls, and support among its features.

Will your code stay private?
Cline’s FAQ says its open-source client runs locally. It says that when you bring your own API keys, requests go from your environment to the selected model provider; requests made with Cline credits pass through Cline infrastructure. Cline also says code and prompts are not used to train models. These are Cline’s statements, not independent security verification.
Data handling depends on your configuration and the provider you use. Before working with sensitive code, check Cline’s current privacy policy, the selected provider’s terms, and your organization’s rules. Also consider what project content is sent in prompts and what access is granted to connected MCP servers or plugins.

Cline is worth considering when you want an agent to take on a multi-step coding task, work with files and tools, and give you opportunities to review or approve actions. It may also suit developers who want to choose among hosted providers or local runtimes rather than use only one model service.

- Consider it if you want to delegate bounded coding work, inspect diffs, and choose the degree of approval and autonomy.
- Plan the setup carefully if your project contains sensitive material, your team restricts model providers, or you intend to connect external tools.
- Do not assume that “open source” makes inference free, that approval prompts remove all risk, or that a model will reliably complete every task.
There is no independent study or controlled performance benchmark in the reviewed official materials to support a numerical productivity claim or ranking. Evaluate Cline on a low-risk task representative of your own work before relying on it for consequential changes.
Common setup and task problems
The following checks are practical ways to diagnose an unsuccessful task; they are not claims that a particular error is unique to Cline.
- The agent cannot complete the requested change: narrow the request, identify relevant files or constraints, and ask for a plan before execution. Break a broad task into reviewable steps.
- A command or edit is waiting for approval: inspect what it will do and approve only if it fits the task. If you enabled auto-approve, review that configuration and the permissions it grants.
- The result does not build or pass checks: inspect the diff and the build, test, or linter output. Give the relevant failure details to the agent and ask for a targeted correction, then run the checks again.
- A connected service is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly: verify that the MCP server or plugin is available and configured for the service, and review its access and permissions. Cline’s documented integrations do not guarantee that every external service will work in every setup.
- Inference is more expensive than expected: check which model and provider handled the task and review that provider’s current rates and usage records. Software being free does not make provider inference free.
- You are unsure where a request goes: identify whether you are using your own API credentials or Cline credits, then consult the applicable Cline and provider privacy terms.
