Rocks that fell from a cliff and split open in a sheep field in Finnmark, northern Norway, revealed a three-dimensionally preserved fossil of Charnia, a soft-bodied Ediacaran organism. The University of Cambridge dates it to about 560 million years ago. Its relief reveals subtle ridges along its branches that are difficult to see in the flattened fossil impressions more commonly found from this period.
What did researchers find in the Norwegian rocks?
The rocks contained an assemblage of Ediacaran fossils, including a specimen identified as Charnia, a frond-shaped organism. The fern-like appearance is a visual comparison, not evidence that it was a plant. The University of Cambridge describes the fossil as about 560 million years old.
Cambridge reports this as the first confirmed Charnia find in Scandinavia and calls the locality the first new major site of its kind in Europe in decades. The fossils came from Finnmark in the Norwegian Arctic, where geologists had previously observed traces interpreted as evidence of organisms anchoring to an ancient seafloor, but had not found the organisms themselves. The discovery occurred when cliff-fallen blocks split open in a sheep field.

Researchers suggest that such discoveries may indicate a wider geographic distribution for early organisms than the familiar sites alone imply; the Norwegian locality does not, by itself, establish the extent of that range.

What makes this fossil’s preservation unusual?
Many Ediacaran organisms had soft bodies and no hard skeletons, so they were difficult to preserve. Their fossils are often compressed into two-dimensional impressions. This Norwegian specimen retains three-dimensional relief: its shape stands out from the surrounding rock rather than appearing only as a flattened outline.
That relief makes fine details easier to see. Researchers report subtle ridges, called keels, running along the branches. They had not detected these ridges in flatter examples. The specimen therefore offers anatomical information that may be obscured when a soft-bodied organism is compressed.

How might the organism have been preserved?
The researchers interpret the surrounding sedimentary deposits as evidence that a dense underwater sediment flow rapidly buried the organism. Such a flow—sometimes described as an underwater avalanche—may have carried sediment into or through the soft body, helping preserve its three-dimensional shape. This is a geological interpretation of the deposits, not a directly observed event.
What was Charnia?
The researchers describe Charnia cautiously as an early animal-like organism. It was soft-bodied and frond-shaped, with no known mouth, organs, or visible means of movement. Cambridge compares it loosely to a sedentary jellyfish, but it was not a modern jellyfish; its precise biological classification should not be treated as settled.

“Ediacaran” refers to the period in which it lived. “Three-dimensional” describes how the fossil retains form and relief in the rock, in contrast to a compressed impression. The paper’s term “turbiditic deposits” refers to deposits associated with underwater sediment gravity flows.

The study, titled “Charnia and other late Ediacaran macrofossils preserved in turbiditic deposits of the Indreelva Member (Finnmark, Norway),” was published in Palaeontology in 2026. Its DOI is 10.1111/pala.70082. The available reporting identifies the organism and broad preservation interpretation, but does not establish details such as exact dating methods or specimen measurements.
