To clean a used device safely, power it off, unplug it, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for its exact model. Start with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth; use a compatible wipe or a lightly dampened cloth only if the maker permits it. Never spray liquid directly onto a device or let it pool in openings. Alcohol is not safe for every finish, mesh, or accessory.
Before cleaning, identify the device and its surfaces
Cleaning guidance can differ between products from the same manufacturer, and even between surfaces on one device. Find the instructions for the exact model before choosing a cleaner. The maker’s directions take priority over a general electronics-cleaning method.
Gather a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. Have a compatible wipe or cleaning solution only if the manufacturer allows it. Remove a case and detachable accessories where appropriate, then power the device off and disconnect its cables or power source. HP specifically advises against cleaning a product while it is on or plugged in; Apple also says to disconnect external power and cables.
Do not charge or power the device again until it and any removable parts are fully dry.

Use this low-moisture cleaning sequence
- Remove loose dirt. Wipe exterior surfaces gently with a clean, dry, soft lint-free cloth. Avoid paper towels, abrasive materials, and rough scrubbing.
- Wipe permitted hard surfaces. If the model’s instructions allow moisture, lightly dampen the cloth or use a compatible wipe. Put liquid on the cloth, never spray it onto the device.
- Keep liquid away from openings. Do not let moisture enter ports, speakers, microphones, seams, keyboards, mesh, or charging contacts. Do not push dirt into an opening or improvise with sharp tools around it.
- Follow the drying directions. Let the device and its removable parts dry fully before reconnecting, powering on, charging, or reassembling them.
If grime appears to be inside the device, or the device is damaged, stop rather than flooding it or taking it apart. Consult the manufacturer’s model-specific service guidance.
Choose the method by device, not by a universal alcohol rule
Alcohol-based wipes are permitted for some surfaces but can harm others. The CDC’s electronics guidance is conditional: follow the manufacturer’s directions, and if none are available, consider alcohol-based wipes or sprays containing at least 70% alcohol for touch screens. Dry the surface thoroughly and avoid pooling. This is a fallback, not permission to use alcohol on every device.

For any disinfectant, follow its label, including its required contact time, as well as the device maker’s compatibility instructions. Do not use a product on a surface the maker says is incompatible.
Phones, tablets, and Apple products
Apple recommends a soft, lint-free cloth, disconnecting external power and cables, keeping moisture out of openings, and not spraying the product. Its guidance permits 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes, 75% ethyl alcohol wipes, or disinfectant wipes on hard, nonporous surfaces. That permission does not automatically apply to other materials or manufacturers’ products. See Apple’s cleaning instructions.

Laptops and other HP computers
HP advises using a 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water solution on many exterior areas, with a moist—not dripping—cloth, while keeping liquid out of openings. HP says not to use that solution on PCs with an antifingerprint coating and documents a model-specific painted-bezel exception. Check the guidance for your computer before applying it: HP’s computer-cleaning instructions.
Keyboards and mice
For Microsoft keyboards and mice, the manufacturer says to apply an isopropyl alcohol solution of 70% or less to a soft, lint-free cloth. It also describes using a lightly dampened lint-free cloth or cotton swab with mild soap and water on keyboard surfaces, taking care not to drip liquid into the keyboard. Nintendo Switch and Joy-Con
Nintendo’s UK support guidance says that when disinfection is needed, lightly apply a consumer-grade disinfectant containing about 70% alcohol to a soft, clean cloth, then gently wipe the product. Earbuds need their own model-specific method, particularly around mesh and charging contacts. Samsung’s cited US guidance advises against metal or wire brushes, recommends a dry soft cloth for earbud blades, and cautions against alcohol and organic solvents. Do not transfer a phone’s or controller’s cleaning method to earbuds. Use the exact model’s instructions for the earbuds, tips, and case. Samsung’s Galaxy earbuds cleaning guidance.

Cleaning is not the same as disinfecting
Cleaning removes dirt and impurities. Sanitizing and disinfecting refer to reducing or killing germs with products intended for those purposes; a surface that looks clean has not necessarily been disinfected. Follow both the device maker’s material guidance and the product label. The EPA explains the distinction between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting.
The CDC describes cleaning as an important first step for removing most germs from household surfaces. For electronics, its guidance is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the conditional touch-screen fallback only when those instructions are unavailable.
