Small functions help when their names make a fragment’s purpose clearer—not simply because they have fewer lines. Treat function length as a prompt to look for a useful intention to name, then extract it in small, behavior-preserving steps and check the result with tests.
Why small functions can make code easier to read
A well-named function works like a signpost: it lets a reader follow the larger operation without first studying every implementation detail. The call site can show the sequence of intentions, while the function body remains available when someone needs to know how a particular step works.
That benefit depends on the name. An extracted function that merely restates trivial mechanics may add a layer of navigation without making the code clearer. The goal is not to minimize line count; it is to make the code’s purpose easier to see.
How long should a function be?
There is no universal line-count threshold established by the sources here. In his 2016 article, “Function Length,” Martin Fowler says that size guidance is a proxy for the more important question: when does code belong in its own function? His preference for functions of a few lines is a personal heuristic, not a rule for every language or codebase.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Fowler describes his mostly Ruby website codebase as roughly 15 KLOC. He reports that about 45% of its method bodies were two lines or less, counting non-comment, non-blank lines and excluding the def and end lines. This is an observation about one codebase, not a benchmark for quality or proof that a particular function length improves maintainability. The sources do not establish an ideal length through an independent comparative study.
When is a fragment worth extracting?
Fowler’s practical test is whether understanding a fragment takes effort. As he puts it: “If you have to spend effort into looking at a fragment of code to figure out what it’s doing, then you should extract it into a function and name the function after that ‘what’.” The key is to name what the code is doing or why it exists, rather than merely label its mechanics.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Extract when: the fragment expresses a distinct intention and a clear name would help a reader understand the containing function.
- Pause when: the proposed name only repeats a simple operation, or the call would force readers to jump through layers without improving the overall flow.
A function name can be longer than the code it names and still be useful. Judge the split by whether the name makes the caller more expressive, not by whether the extracted body looks substantial.
How to extract a function without changing behavior
Refactoring means restructuring code to make it easier to understand or modify without changing its observable behavior. The official Refactoring site recommends a series of small transformations: keeping the system working as the structure changes helps reduce the chance of error.

- Find the confusing fragment. Identify code that takes effort to understand or obscures the purpose of its containing function.
- Choose the intention. Ask what useful purpose the fragment serves. If you cannot give it a clear, meaningful name, extraction may not help.
- Extract and name it. Make the new function’s purpose visible at the call site, without changing what the program does.
- Check a small step. Keep the code compiling and run the existing tests as you proceed. Clare Sudbery’s 2020 walkthrough describes this approach in a real C# codebase, including having tests in place before refactoring. It is a practical example, not a controlled study of optimal function size.
- Read the caller again. If the larger operation is easier to follow, the extraction helped. If the name and extra navigation make it harder, reconsider the split.
This is a practical workflow, not a process every project must follow identically. Its guiding idea is to make changes small enough to inspect and verify while preserving behavior.
How to compare two possible designs
When deciding whether to keep code inline or extract it, consider these questions together; they are practical checks, not a numerical scoring system.

- Behavior preservation: Does the refactor leave observable behavior unchanged?
- Change safety: Are the steps small enough to identify and correct a failure, with tests available to check behavior?
