Claude’s published usage guidance is easier to describe in broad terms, but neither assistant offers a universal, guaranteed message allowance. Anthropic gives Claude Pro and Max users a five-hour reset frame and average message estimates; OpenAI says ChatGPT limits vary by plan, model, and—on managed accounts—workspace settings. For your own remaining use and reset timing, check the usage information shown in your account.
Does Claude or ChatGPT have a message limit?
Yes, both services limit usage, but a message count is not a fixed allowance that applies to every user or task. Anthropic says Claude usage varies by plan and is affected by message length, attachment size, conversation length, tool use, model choice, and artifact use. OpenAI likewise says ChatGPT limits depend on plan and model, and may also depend on workspace settings for managed accounts. Anthropic’s usage-limit guidance and OpenAI’s ChatGPT limit guidance describe those factors.
That means two users on the same plan may not get the same practical number of tasks from an allowance. A long conversation with files or tool use can consume capacity differently from a short exchange. Model and feature choices matter, too.
How do Claude and ChatGPT limits reset?
Claude Pro and Max: a stated five-hour window
Anthropic says Pro and Max rate limits are shared between Claude and Claude Code and reset every five hours. That scope matters: this statement is about those plans and those two tools, not a guarantee that every Claude product or tier follows an identical limit schedule. Anthropic’s Claude Code plan guidance gives the reset detail.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ChatGPT: check the displayed reset time
OpenAI says ChatGPT shows a reset time when one is available. The guidance also says a user can wait for a reset or choose another available model after reaching a limit. Since ChatGPT limits vary by plan and model, there is no single reset cadence to apply to all ChatGPT use. OpenAI’s limit guidance explains the account-specific approach.
How many messages can you send before hitting a limit?
Claude’s estimates are averages, not quotas
Anthropic estimates that average Claude use may allow about 45 messages per five hours on Pro, about 225 on Max 5x, and about 900 on Max 20x. These are illustrative average-user estimates, not guaranteed caps; Anthropic notes that actual usage depends on the factors above and that capabilities can change. The same plan-comparison guidance describes capacity as Limited for Free, Standard for Pro, 5x Pro for Max 5x, and 20x Pro for Max 20x. The Claude Code plan article provides the message estimates, while Anthropic’s plan guide describes relative capacity.

ChatGPT’s figures depend on the model and plan
OpenAI publishes some model-specific allowances rather than one overall ChatGPT message count. For example, its GPT-5.6 and GPT-6 Pro help article lists GPT-6 Pro allowances of 200 messages per week for Pro $200, 50 per week for Pro $100, 15 per month for Business Standard, and 50 per week for Business Premium. These figures apply to the named model and plans in that article, not to ChatGPT generally. The article also explains that some GPT-5.6 Sol Pro use draws from a shared allowance, so switching between those models does not necessarily create a fresh pool. OpenAI’s model-specific allowance guidance has the plan details.
Which assistant is less likely to stop you mid-task?
There is no evidence-based universal winner. Claude has a more easily summarized published frame for Pro and Max—five hours, with rough average message counts—but those counts are sensitive to how you use the service. ChatGPT’s stated limits can be more specific to the selected model and account, which means the practical allowance may require checking your plan details and in-product information. The providers describe different scopes and use different measures, so their figures do not support a direct numerical comparison.

For a long or demanding task, do not plan around a nominal message count alone. Long context, attachments, coding workflows, tool calls, and model choice can alter how quickly capacity is used. Anthropic also notes that content in Projects is cached and does not count against limits when reused, and that similar prompts may be partially cached; this is a usage detail, not a promise of a particular number of extra messages. Anthropic’s best-practices page covers those caching and usage factors.

- Identify the exact plan and model. For ChatGPT, distinguish personal from managed workspace use and check the model-specific allowance. For Claude, verify whether your plan is Free, Pro, or Max and whether Claude Code is part of the workflow.
- Include the features you expect to use. Account for files, tools, long conversations, artifacts, and coding tasks rather than estimating from short text-only prompts.
- Check the in-product usage information. OpenAI says reset timing appears when available; Anthropic describes warnings about remaining capacity. Use these account views for your current status rather than treating published averages as a live meter.
- Recheck official plan guidance before relying on a number. Provider limits may change with product updates, rollout, plan, or workspace configuration.
In practice, Claude’s five-hour frame can make its Pro and Max limits simpler to explain, while ChatGPT’s account and model-specific allowances make the exact ceiling more dependent on what you have selected. Either way, the in-account usage view is the most relevant guide for whether your next task will fit.
