Claude for Government has an administrator audit log, and administrators can export usage and audit records. Anthropic’s public materials do not specify a universal Government audit-log retention period or a complete list of logged events. The 180-day export window described in Anthropic’s Enterprise help article is for Enterprise; it is not confirmed for Claude for Government.

What Claude for Government audit logs capture

Anthropic says that administrative actions are recorded in an audit log for organization administrators to review. Administrators can also export usage and audit records. However, Anthropic’s public Government product page does not list every event type or field included in those records.

That means the public description confirms the existence of administrator-facing audit records, but it is not enough to determine exactly which actions or details an agency’s export will contain. For the event taxonomy and fields that apply to your deployment, consult your agency-specific documentation.

Do audit logs include prompts and responses?

Anthropic says conversation history stays on the agency-managed device. That statement describes conversation history; it does not establish what appears in an audit-log export. The public Government materials do not say that audit logs contain prompts or responses, nor do they provide a complete Government-specific schema that would settle the question.

Anthropic’s separate Enterprise help article says Enterprise audit logs include event and actor details, among other fields, and that chat and project titles and content are not exported there—only unique identifiers are. Those Enterprise details should not be treated as confirmed behavior for Claude for Government.

How long are Claude for Government audit logs kept?

Anthropic’s public Government materials do not state a standard audit-log retention duration or export lookback period. The Government product page confirms that administrators can export usage and audit records, but does not say how far back those exports reach or how long the records are stored.

Anthropic’s Government onboarding article says a detailed data-control, visibility, and retention overview is available and can be tailored to an agency’s configuration. Ask your agency administrator for that overview, or obtain written confirmation from the Anthropic government account team, before setting a retention rule or promising a particular history window.

Does Enterprise’s 180-day export window apply?

No Government-wide 180-day window is established by the public sources. Anthropic’s Enterprise audit-log help article says organization owners can export logs from the past 180 days. That is Enterprise guidance, not a published retention or export commitment for Claude for Government.

Enterprise also has a separate custom-retention article covering chats and projects. It describes a 30-day minimum for custom retention, with timing tied to the last chat message or project update. Those chat-and-project settings do not establish a Government audit-log schedule.

What agencies should confirm before setting a retention policy

Because public materials do not supply a universal Government schedule or full event schema, agencies should verify the details for their own configuration. Confirm these items in the tailored Government overview or with the responsible administrator:

  • Which administrative, usage, and other events are recorded, and what fields each record contains.
  • Whether any exported record contains message content, or instead contains metadata or identifiers only.
  • How administrators export records and the available historical lookback period.
  • How long audit records are retained, how deletion works, and whether the agency can configure those settings.
  • Which agency configuration and product boundary the documentation covers.

Claude for Government is described by Anthropic as its FedRAMP High-authorized product, while Claude Enterprise is a separate commercial product. Similar features across those offerings are not proof that their audit schemas, export windows, or retention behavior are identical. Anthropic also says Government conversations and uploaded content are not used to train its models by default and that data is encrypted in transit and at rest; those data-handling statements do not specify audit-log retention.
