Claude Code’s Plan Mode creates an editable plan.md before execution, but Anthropic’s documented CLI controls cover planning permissions and session resumption—not browsing, archiving, or versioning plan files. The official documentation reviewed does not establish a universal plan-file path or guarantee how a plan persists between sessions.
What a Claude Code plan file is for
Anthropic describes Plan Mode as asking clarifying questions and then building a user-editable plan.md before Claude executes the work. The file is a planning artifact: it gives you a chance to inspect or revise the proposed approach before implementation begins. Anthropic’s Opus 4.5 announcement describes that role, but does not specify the file’s directory, how its name is generated, or a separate lifecycle for the artifact.
What the CLI can do
Launch in plan permission mode
The CLI reference documents --permission-mode plan as a launch option. It selects a permission mode for the session; it is not documented as a plan-file browser or management command. See Anthropic’s CLI reference for the available command-line controls.
Continue or resume a session
--continue loads the most recent conversation in the current directory. --resume resumes a session by ID or through an interactive selection. These options help return to a conversation, but the CLI reference does not say they list, locate, or manage plan artifacts.

Where the file is saved—and what remains unconfirmed
The official sources cited here do not establish an exact plan-file directory, a filename convention beyond the documented plan.md description, or whether the artifact persists across session transitions. Avoid relying on an assumed path or automatic recovery behavior. If you need a particular plan later, preserve the content using a workflow you control rather than assuming Claude Code will provide a plan archive.
Behavior can change between releases. For a question about a specific installation, check its version and consult the matching documentation and Claude Code release notes. Anthropic’s setup instructions document claude doctor as a way to check installation details; see Set up Claude Code.

Are named, persistent plans available?
A proposal in the official Claude Code issue tracker describes a separate plan-management layer, including concepts such as creating, listing, updating, and executing named plans. Issue #30438 is marked “Closed as not planned.” Its proposed operations should therefore be treated as a requested design, not as shipped Claude Code features.

If the plan must remain available independently, save a copy through your own file-management or version-control process. Do not assume a particular automatic location or archive feature.
