Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and Cursor do not provide one comparable measure of “hours used.” Their screens report different things: a current-session estimate, plan limits, API usage or cost, requests, and tokens. To interpret them correctly, first identify your billing mode, then match the scope, time window and unit before comparing figures. None of the cited product documentation establishes a shared log format or a common measure of developer time.
Why coding-agent usage figures can mislead
A number in a usage screen is meaningful only when you know what it measures. A token count is not a request count; a plan limit is not an invoice; and dollars spent do not reveal how many hours you worked. These products expose different reporting scopes, so adding their figures together or comparing them as if they were the same kind of meter can produce a false picture.
- Session: usage associated with a particular active session.
- Plan allowance or limit: usage or capacity under a subscription, often subject to a reset or applicable credits.
- API account or workspace: recorded API activity and cost for the account or organization shown.
- Requests and tokens: activity units that may inform metering, but are not elapsed time.
The official documentation for these products does not establish that local transcripts, dashboard records and billing totals reconcile exactly, or that their logs share a schema. Treat each number according to the surface and account that produced it.

How to check Claude Code usage
First identify the billing mode
Anthropic distinguishes Claude Code usage included with an organization plan from API-key use billed by token to the configured Console or cloud account. Check which sign-in and billing arrangement applies before interpreting any usage figure. The relevant guidance is in Anthropic’s Claude Code models, usage and limits help page.
#1 Best Overall
Use the session view for API-key usage
For API billing, Claude Code’s /cost command shows token and dollar usage for the current session. It is a session-level view, not a report of plan subscription charges. For broader API spend monitoring, Anthropic directs API-key users to the applicable Console or cloud-provider dashboard.
Use Console reporting for account-level costs
Anthropic’s Console cost and usage reporting provides account-level reporting, including charts and token- and tool-use costs. Access is limited to specified Developer, Billing and Admin roles, so an individual user may not see the same reporting surface.

How to check OpenAI Codex usage
For a ChatGPT plan limit or active CLI session
OpenAI directs Codex plan users who are nearing or at a limit to Settings or the usage dashboard; an active Codex CLI session can show status with /status. Usage can count against normal Codex limits and applicable credits or billing. See OpenAI’s Codex plan guidance for the relevant plan context.

OpenAI’s API Usage Dashboard is a separate reporting path for current and past billing periods, with project filters and exports. It does not combine usage or cost across organizations. Use OpenAI’s API usage and cost instructions when the question is about recorded API activity, rather than how close a Codex plan is to its limit. Do not assume this API dashboard captures all subscription-based Codex activity.
Where to see Cursor usage
Individual usage and token breakdowns
Cursor says users can see requests and token breakdowns on the dashboard. Its Models & Pricing documentation also says model selection affects consumption because agent usage is metered according to model/API pricing. Plan quantities and examples can change, so consult the current documentation rather than relying on an old quota figure.
Team reporting and admin-only views
Cursor’s team dashboard documentation describes billing, usage and team settings. Its Admin API documentation describes daily metrics and filtered usage events for team admins, including model, usage category, request costs and token usage when an event is token-based. The analytics documentation describes team reports with request categories and subscription/API usage fields. These administrative views should not be assumed to be available to every individual user.

Compare usage without mixing units
To compare agent usage, make one row per product and record the fields below. If a field is unavailable or the rows use different scopes or units, label the figures non-comparable instead of converting them by guesswork.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Account and billing mode | Plan seat, API key, team account or other applicable mode. |
| Reporting surface | Session command, plan usage screen, API dashboard, individual dashboard or team-admin report. |
| Time window | Date range and timezone; note any rolling reset or billing-period boundary that applies. |
| Model | The model used, particularly where model choice affects metering. |
| Unit | Tokens, requests, utilization, currency or another unit shown by that surface. |
| Allowance versus additional usage | Whether the figure reflects included plan usage, applicable credits or additional billed use. |
| Figure type | Dashboard observation, session figure, plan-limit status or billed amount. |
Only compare values when their scope and unit match. If one figure is a session token-and-dollar view and another is an account-level API total, the difference may reflect what each view covers rather than an error in either record.

How to measure developer hours
The cited vendor documentation describes tokens, requests, limits, session cost and spend; it does not define a common developer-hours metric. If you need time spent, use a time-tracking source that measures elapsed or active time. Do not convert token totals, request counts, quota percentages or dollars into hours unless you have a documented method that supports that conversion.
