The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) began its announced agitation with a Mumbai protest on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2, 2026, demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over disputed electoral-roll revisions. The Associated Press reported hundreds at the rally, but October 2 coverage does not establish a complete nationwide itinerary or total turnout.
What happened on October 2?
CJP founder and national convener Abhijeet Dipke had said the protest would begin in Mumbai and spread to cities across India if Kumar did not resign. The Indian Express reported the announcement on September 25; Hindustan Times reported on October 1 that the planned agitation would start the following day. The AP’s October 2 report confirms the Mumbai rally, but does not document the campaign’s full subsequent schedule.
The AP separately reported that police stopped student and civil-society groups from gathering at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi that day and detained dozens of protesters and some opposition leaders heading there. That was a separate gathering; the report does not describe those groups as part of CJP’s Mumbai event.
What does CJP want?
CJP’s demands concern Kumar’s tenure, electoral-roll changes associated with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and how future Election Commissioners are appointed. The specific proposals reported by Hindustan Times and the Indian Express include:

Kumar’s resignation
CJP called for the Chief Election Commissioner to step down. Dipke told the Indian Express that if Kumar did not resign by October 2, the party would begin its protest in Mumbai and take it to other cities.
Use of an earlier electoral roll
Hindustan Times reported Dipke’s demand to freeze the 2025 electoral roll and hold elections on that basis. The Indian Express also reported calls to secure the January 2025 rolls and stop SIR-related exclusions.

Investigation and accountability for SIR decisions
The Indian Express reported that CJP wants an independent investigation into decisions made during SIR, identification of officials who authorized disputed changes or directives, and transfer of relevant records and files to the Supreme Court or to an independently supervised judicial inquiry. These are CJP’s requested remedies, not findings that the changes were unlawful.
A different process for appointing the next Election Commissioner
CJP called for a transparent, independent appointment process with civil-society participation, according to Hindustan Times.

Why is CJP protesting the electoral-roll revision?
SIR, or Special Intensive Revision, is the Election Commission’s exercise to revise electoral rolls. CJP and other critics argue that the process has been handled improperly and risks excluding eligible voters. The Election Commission says the exercise is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries while ensuring eligible people remain registered. The AP reported that the Commission and government deny wrongdoing; the allegations of manipulation, political bias or improper exclusion remain disputed.
There is also a dispute about internal Election Commission notes. The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected at least 14 times over 10 months to decisions and processes tied to SIR. The Commission acknowledged notes but described them as part of its decision-making process; the account did not explain how the specific concerns were resolved. In its October 2 report, the AP said the Commission disputed calling the notes formal written objections, describing them instead as differing views and deliberations. The accounts do not establish that Kumar acted illegally or alone.

What do the reported figures show—and what do they not show?

The 13-crore claim and the AP’s regional percentage describe different reported figures and should not be treated as corroborating measures of the same nationwide total.
What is known about CJP’s earlier protest?
The Indian Express noted that CJP had earlier protested at Jantar Mantar over the NEET examination paper-leak issue, before Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on July 25. That sequence is background; it does not establish that CJP alone caused the resignation.
