Cisco has demonstrated research prototypes and software for parts of that approach, but the networked-computer proof of concept it announced with IBM is still a target for the end of 2030—not a completed system.
What does it mean to link quantum computers?
A conventional network moves classical data between computers. Cisco’s proposed quantum data center would also use a dynamically switchable network to establish entanglement between quantum processors. The aim is to divide work among processors while giving them quantum links needed to coordinate parts of a computation. Cisco describes this as one possible way to scale quantum computing services as an alternative to relying only on a single, much larger processor.
That is the scale-out approach: connect multiple processors rather than scale up one monolithic machine. Cisco frames the challenge in its quantum data center vision as a need to move beyond processors that had advanced from tens to hundreds of qubits toward machines with tens of millions of qubits for useful practical work. That figure is Cisco’s framing of the scaling challenge, not an independently established universal threshold.
In Cisco’s broader vision for future quantum networks, networks could connect quantum computers and sensing devices by distributing entanglement. These are research goals, not a description of a currently available quantum internet or a service that customers can deploy today.

How could a network let processors work together?
Connecting quantum processors requires more than a conventional data-center switch. Information held in a processor is stationary; to connect machines, the system needs interfaces that turn it into “flying” quantum information that can travel through a network. IBM and Cisco say their proposed work requires new connections, including microwave-optical transducers, as well as optical technologies, entanglement distribution and software to coordinate the processors.
- Partition the computation. Software divides a circuit into parts that can run on separate processors.
- Establish quantum links. Network equipment creates and routes entanglement between processors so the distributed parts can be coordinated.
- Coordinate execution. Software schedules the generation and distribution of entanglement alongside the partitioned circuit.
Each step adds technical demands. The network must preserve useful quantum-state and entanglement fidelity while routing information; the software must coordinate processors and network resources. The cited announcements describe approaches and prototypes, but do not establish that this architecture has achieved large-scale, fault-tolerant operation.

What has Cisco demonstrated so far?
Cisco’s April 23, 2026 announcement describes a working research prototype of its Universal Quantum Switch. Cisco says it is designed to route quantum information while translating between encoding modalities. The company reported experimental validation with polarization encoding; time-bin and frequency-bin support were built into the design but remained a next validation step in that announcement.

Cisco’s 2025 announcement also introduced Quantum Alert and Quantum Sync demonstrations. Cisco describes Alert as detecting interception attempts through changes to quantum properties, and Sync as a coordination application; the Sync demonstration used a network simulator with real protocols. These are demonstrations, not deployed services.

What is the IBM–Cisco plan, and when might it happen?
On November 20, 2025, IBM and Cisco announced an intention to collaborate on distributed quantum computing. They set a target of demonstrating an initial proof of concept by the end of 2030. The proposed demonstration would entangle qubits from separate quantum computers in distinct cryogenic environments. It remains a plan, with new interconnects and supporting software still required.
The collaboration announcement describes longer-term ambitions for computations over tens to hundreds of thousands of qubits and potentially trillions of quantum gates. Those are goals, not measured capabilities of a working network. It also describes possible links between processors across buildings or data centers and a future quantum computing internet in the late 2030s.

The sources do not establish which approach will prove more practical or economical, or identify a product winner. Cisco’s prototype results are company-reported, and its collaboration roadmap remains aspirational. Whether networking processors can overcome the additional demands of interconnection and coordination is an open technical question.
