The company says it is redirecting investment toward silicon, optics, security and artificial intelligence. It has not publicly itemized which roles or locations are affected.
How many people is Cisco laying off?
Cisco’s stated figure is fewer than 4,000 jobs. Reuters-syndicated coverage described the cuts as about 4,000, but that is a rounded description; Cisco’s own wording is “fewer than 4,000.” The company said the reduction represents less than 5% of its total employee base.
Cisco’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K reports approximately 82,400 employees as of July 25, 2026. That is a dated company headcount, not a published breakdown of the employees selected for the restructuring.
Why is Cisco cutting jobs while AI orders are growing?
The restructuring is framed as a reallocation of investment, not as evidence that demand for Cisco’s products has fallen. Cisco says it wants to invest in silicon, optics, security and AI, and its leadership has described the changes as preparation for AI-era growth and a shift in how work is done. A Reuters-syndicated report carried by GV Wire also noted that the cuts came as orders surged.

Those facts can coexist: a company may see demand in one area while changing its workforce and spending priorities across the wider business. Cisco’s disclosures do not establish that AI itself is replacing the employees affected, or identify a direct link between particular job losses and specific AI projects.
What will the restructuring cost, and when will it be completed?
The amounts below reflect different stages of Cisco’s disclosures, not interchangeable totals. The initial estimate was a forecast; the later annual filing reports costs incurred and an updated completion expectation.

| Disclosure | Cost or timing | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| May 13, 2026 restructuring filing | Up to $1 billion in pre-tax charges; approximately $450 million expected in fiscal Q4 2026, with the balance in fiscal 2027 | The estimate covered severance, other one-time termination benefits and related costs. Cisco’s SEC filing stated the original forecast. |
| Fiscal 2026 Form 10-K | $511 million incurred in fiscal 2026; substantial completion expected by the end of fiscal 2027 | The filing gives a later reported amount and expected completion horizon; it does not say the job reductions were all completed. Cisco’s Form 10-K reports these figures. |
Cisco initially said the workforce reduction would occur in Q4 of fiscal 2026. Its later filing moves the expected substantial-completion date out to the end of fiscal 2027. The disclosures do not provide a final employee count for the completed reductions.
Which Cisco employees are affected?
Cisco has not publicly released a complete role-by-role or location-by-location list in the cited disclosures. Without such a list, it is not possible to say which teams, offices or individual employees are included. The stated workforce figure and schedule are company guidance and may change as implementation proceeds.
