Cisco says an unauthenticated remote attacker can send crafted HTTP requests and, if successful, run commands that lead to root access on the affected FMC host. Cisco reported active exploitation in August 2026 and urges customers to upgrade to a fixed release.
The case illustrates an architectural point: a firewall’s management interface can be a high-value perimeter of its own. Restricting its reachability reduces exposure, but Cisco says that is not a fix for this vulnerability. The advisory describes root access to the affected FMC device; it does not say that every firewall managed by that device is automatically compromised.
What CVE-2026-20079 does
Cisco attributes the flaw to an improperly created system process at boot time. Crafted HTTP requests to an affected device can bypass authentication; a successful attack can run scripts or commands and obtain root access on the underlying operating system. Cisco classifies it as Critical, with a CVSS 3.1 base score of 10.0. That score is a severity metric, not a count of victims or an estimate of losses.
Cisco says the vulnerability was found by Brandon Sakai during internal security testing. Its advisory was first published March 4, 2026, and updated September 16, 2026. In the update, Cisco said its Product Security Incident Response Team became aware of active exploitation in August 2026. The advisory does not identify an attacker, campaign, victim count, or attack volume. Cisco’s CVE-2026-20079 advisory is the authoritative source for current product and version details.

Which Cisco products are affected
Cisco says the vulnerability affects Cisco Secure FMC Software and SCC Firewall Management regardless of device configuration. The SaaS-delivered SCC Firewall Management fix has been deployed; Cisco says users of that offering do not need to take action.
Cisco lists Firewall Device Manager (FDM), Secure Firewall ASA Software, Secure Firewall Threat Defense (FTD) Software, and Security Cloud Control (SCC), formerly Defense Orchestrator, as not affected. Its distinction matters: SCC Firewall Management is affected, while the broader SCC product name appears in the not-affected list. Do not treat those labels as interchangeable.

Find the fixed release for your train
The first fixed versions in Cisco’s September 16, 2026 advisory vary by Secure FTD / Secure FMC release train:

Cisco says these hardening releases include the fix and other internally discovered vulnerabilities. Check the installed version and supported upgrade path against the advisory and Cisco Software Checker; the table is not a recommendation to jump from one train to another without validating that path.

Why management-interface exposure matters
Cisco’s advisory states: “If the FMC management interface does not have public internet access, the attack surface that is associated with this vulnerability is reduced.” A management interface reachable from the public internet gives a remote attacker a path to attempt the bypass; limiting access reduces who can reach that path.
Reachability and remediation are different. Cisco says there is no workaround that addresses CVE-2026-20079, so an isolated interface is not a substitute for installing the applicable fixed release. The lesson behind “management planes are the real perimeter” is not that the advisory proves every firewall product or managed device is vulnerable. It is that a management host with powerful control over security infrastructure deserves its own access boundaries and prompt patching.

How to check for a possible exploitation indicator
Cisco provides a log search that may identify a lead for investigation. In FMC expert mode, run:
zgrep "package_info.*license" /var/log/messages*Cisco’s example output includes a command invoking /usr/local/sf/bin/package_info.pl /var/tmp/license.tmp --lsm. If matching output includes /var/tmp/license.tmp, Cisco says the vulnerability may have been exploited on that device. The indicator is not proof of compromise by itself.

What to do if you suspect compromise
- Contact Cisco TAC immediately. Cisco directs customers who suspect exploitation to TAC for recovery options; organizations can also use their contracted maintenance provider.
- Do not treat a preventive hot fix as incident recovery. Cisco warns that hot fixes intended to prevent future exploitation may not address an existing compromise.
- Plan the fixed-release upgrade. Use the advisory and Software Checker to confirm the appropriate version and supported path for the installed train.
