CISA’s September 8, 2026 alert identifies two Windows vulnerabilities as actively exploited: CVE-2026-81963 and CVE-2026-85880. That alert does not establish which Microsoft update fixes either one. Check the Microsoft Security Update Guide entry for the specific CVE and your Windows product before choosing a patch.
What CISA’s alert says
CISA added CVE-2026-81963, described as Windows Link Following, and CVE-2026-85880, described as a Windows Heap-Based Buffer Overflow, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog based on evidence of active exploitation. The alert also lists vulnerabilities affecting Adobe Commerce/Magento and N-able; those are separate issues, not Windows flaws. Read CISA’s September 8, 2026 alert.
KEV listing is the urgent signal: organizations should prioritize checking whether their systems are affected and applying the confirmed fix. It does not, by itself, identify the applicable Windows editions or the update package.
Which Windows update fixes the vulnerabilities?
The available release-history information does not confirm a CVE-to-update mapping for either flaw. Microsoft’s Windows 11 release history records KB5124008, released September 8, 2026, as a baseline update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. That same-date release is not proof that KB5124008 fixes either CVE. Do not install or report it as the remedy for these vulnerabilities without confirming the matching CVE record and KB details.

Microsoft calls its Security Update Guide the authoritative source for Microsoft security updates. Search there for each CVE separately, check the affected product and version, then open the associated KB article for installation caveats and known issues. The consulted sources do not establish whether both vulnerabilities affect Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, which Windows Server versions may be affected, or whether package prerequisites apply.
How to check and install the applicable update
For an individual Windows PC
- Identify the Windows version and edition installed on the PC in Settings > System > About.
- In the Microsoft Security Update Guide, search for CVE-2026-81963 or CVE-2026-85880. Confirm that the affected-products list includes your Windows release and note the update Microsoft associates with that CVE.
- Read the linked KB article for prerequisites, installation guidance, and known issues.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install the applicable update offered for the device, then follow any restart prompt.
- Return to Windows Update to check for further updates. If the update does not appear, do not substitute a package based only on a matching release date; recheck product applicability and the KB instructions.
Microsoft says Windows security updates are generally categorized as Important and downloaded and installed automatically through Windows Update. Windows 11 monthly security updates are cumulative, but that general servicing model does not prove which update fixes a particular CVE.

For managed devices or manual deployment
Administrators can use Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or obtain standalone packages through the Microsoft Update Catalog. Microsoft advises checking the Security Update Guide and the relevant KB article before manual installation. Verify the target product, package, and prerequisites for each device before deployment.
Who must prioritize remediation?
CISA encourages all organizations to prioritize vulnerabilities in its KEV Catalog. A separate directive, BOD 26-04, applies specifically to U.S. federal civilian executive branch agencies and sets risk-based prioritization duties; it is not a federal mandate for every business or individual. The directive also sets expectations for covered agencies to check in specified cases whether threat actors compromised a system before its patch was applied. Read BOD 26-04.

Does installing the update tell you whether a device was compromised?
No. Installing a fix addresses the vulnerability going forward; it does not establish whether an attacker accessed a device before patching. If there is a possible intrusion, follow your organization’s incident-response process and assess the system separately rather than treating a successful update as evidence that no compromise occurred.
