Use JavaScript’s built-in Date for straightforward timestamps and local or UTC operations. Choose Temporal when your code needs to distinguish an exact moment from a calendar date, a wall-clock time, or a time in a named time zone. Consider Chronera only after confirming that the specific features you need are implemented and supported in a published release: its package description characterizes it as pre-1.0 and at the architecture stage.
What are Chronera and Temporal?
Here, “Temporal” means JavaScript’s date-and-time API, not the separate Temporal workflow platform. Temporal is a standardized ECMAScript API; the TC39 proposal repository lists it at Stage 4. Chronera is a separate JavaScript/TypeScript toolkit whose package description outlines a proposed model for dates, times, calendars, eras, locales, and time zones. Those are different maturity claims: Temporal has documented API behavior and reported runtime releases, while Chronera’s description says its implementation is pre-1.0 and architecture-stage.
Chronera’s listed capabilities should therefore be read as project intentions, not as proof that each feature is available or production-ready. Its package description says support claims depend on a green release matrix. Check the published version, documentation, and support evidence for the exact capability you plan to use.
Why use a date-time library instead of JavaScript Date?
Date can represent an epoch timestamp, but its component-based behavior is limited to UTC and the device’s local time zone. It cannot by itself represent an arbitrary named time zone or a date or wall-clock time that has no time zone. Its setters also mutate the object, and parsing date-time strings is not consistently specified for every format. MDN describes Temporal as designed to replace Date with a more explicit API. MDN’s Temporal reference explains the distinction.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The key question is what the value means in your application. A birthday is a calendar date, not an instant. A recurring “open at 9 a.m.” rule is a wall-clock time, not a duration of elapsed seconds. A timestamp from a log is an instant on the timeline. Mixing these concepts can produce bugs when converting, comparing, or displaying values.
How Temporal models date and time
Temporal uses purpose-specific types rather than asking one mutable object to represent every kind of date-time value. Its objects are immutable, according to the TC39 Temporal proposal repository.

| Type | What it represents | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
Instant |
A point on the timeline | Events that happened at a specific moment, such as a recorded transaction |
ZonedDateTime |
An instant combined with a time zone and calendar | Displaying or calculating a moment in a named zone |
PlainDate |
A calendar date without a time or zone | Birthdays, holidays, or due dates defined as dates |
PlainTime |
A wall-clock time without a date or zone | A daily opening time or another time-of-day rule |
PlainDateTime |
A date and wall-clock time without a zone | A local appointment time before a zone has been chosen |
Duration |
An amount or difference of time | Representing a length of time separately from a timestamp |
A time-zone name is not interchangeable with a fixed UTC offset. Zone rules can change and may differ across dates, including because of daylight-saving changes. If an application needs to preserve local time in a particular region, keep the zone identity rather than reducing it to today’s offset. Temporal’s ZonedDateTime is designed to keep the instant, zone, and calendar together.
When to choose Temporal
- Your data has different date-time meanings. Use the type that matches the domain: for example,
PlainDatefor a birthday andInstantfor an event timestamp. - You need named-zone calculations. Use a zoned value where regional time-zone rules matter; a fixed offset does not preserve those rules.
- You want a standard API. Temporal is an ECMAScript API with official documentation and a TC39 proposal repository that reports shipped implementations.
- Your supported runtimes can run it. Confirm exact browser and server versions, or decide whether an acceptable polyfill fits your project.
When a separate library may still make sense
A separate date-time library can be appropriate when target environments lack the needed built-in support, its ergonomics suit the project, or the application requires domain behavior that its chosen built-in API does not provide. Temporal also has calendar-aware objects and integration with Intl; verify that the exact operation you need is supported in your target engines.

For Chronera in particular, first establish that the feature you need exists in a released version. Its package description proposes explicit value semantics, calendars and eras, locales and numbering systems, strict parsing, and time-zone projection, but also describes the project as pre-1.0 and architecture-stage. A specification-level feature list is not confirmation of shipped behavior. The available description also does not establish comparative speed, correctness, or developer experience.

| Runtime | Reported version | Reported ship date |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox | 139 | 2025-05-27 |

These are the versions and dates reported by the TC39 proposal repository, not a guarantee for every browser, embedded webview, or deployment environment. MDN’s reference, last modified 2025-12-08, still labels Temporal as limited availability. Check current compatibility for all target runtimes before relying on native support.
If a required runtime does not support Temporal, evaluate a maintained polyfill and test its compatibility, behavior, and deployment cost for your use case. TC39 lists polyfill projects and warns against using the proposal repository’s own non-production polyfill.

A practical decision checklist
- Name the value. Decide whether it is an instant, a zoned local date-time, a date only, a time only, a local date-time without a zone, or a duration.
- Identify the time-zone rule. If the application needs a region’s changing rules, retain a named zone rather than only a UTC offset.
- Check every runtime. Confirm support for the exact browser, server, and other JavaScript environments you ship to; plan for a polyfill if needed.
- Verify library maturity. For Chronera, confirm that the published release implements the required behavior and has documented support before adopting it.
- Test domain edge cases. Check conversions and calculations around relevant zone transitions, date boundaries, and calendar rules for your application.
