Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Both can display photos from Google Photos, but the setup and day-to-day use differ—and feature availability varies by device and region.
How the two options differ
| What matters | Chromecast or Google TV | Google Nest Hub |
|---|---|---|
| Where photos appear | On a connected TV; uses the screen you already own if it is compatible. | On the smart display’s built-in screen. |
| Best suited to | A large shared display, ambient photos while the TV is idle, or deliberate casting from a phone. | A dedicated photo frame in a kitchen, office, or other spot where a TV is inconvenient. |
| Ways to show photos | Ambient screensaver and, on compatible Android devices, active casting of a photo or album. | Photo Frame while the display is idle; users can also interact with displayed photos. |
| Where settings are managed | Google Home for older Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra ambient settings; Google TV Ambient mode settings for Google TV devices. | Google Home or the display itself. |
| Compatibility | Depends on the exact Chromecast or Google TV product, software, account, and region. | Depends on the display, Google Photos account, region, and supported Assistant language for voice controls. |
These distinctions reflect Google’s documented device features rather than a universal ranking. Google lists Chromecast, Google TV, Nest Hub, and Nest Hub Max as eligible photo-frame destinations, while cautioning that availability varies by device and region (Google Photos: eligible devices for photo frame).
Can Chromecast show Google Photos?
Yes. The workflow depends on which product you mean by “Chromecast.” Older Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra devices can use Google Photos as an ambient screensaver, while Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, and Google TV televisions use Google TV’s Ambient mode settings. Google’s instructions separate these products, so do not assume they share identical menus or features.
Ambient photos on older Chromecast devices
For Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra, set the ambient screensaver in the Google Home app, choose Google Photos, and select private or shared albums. A Google Photos account is required. Photos in Archive are not shown by this ambient feature, and a factory reset removes ambient screensaver preferences. See Google’s Chromecast ambient mode instructions.

Ambient photos on Google TV
On Google TV devices, choose Google Photos as the screensaver source in Ambient mode, then select albums and configure available slideshow options. Google describes dynamic and basic slideshow modes on supported devices, along with slideshow speed and attribution settings. Dynamic slideshows are limited to eligible Google TV devices globally with at least 2 GB of RAM. Follow the product-specific steps in Google TV Ambient mode setup.
Cast a photo or album from an Android device
To show something immediately rather than wait for the TV’s screensaver, use Google Photos on a compatible Android phone or tablet. The mobile device and Chromecast should be on the same Wi-Fi network; select a photo or album to cast, swipe through photos, and stop casting in the app when finished. This is useful for a planned slideshow or sharing a particular set of pictures. Google’s steps are at Show photos on a TV with Chromecast.

Can a Google Nest Hub work as a digital photo frame?
Yes. Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max have a Photo Frame feature that can show selected Google Photos albums while the display is idle. In the settings, choose Photo Frame and select albums; you can instead display art-gallery images or clock faces. Configure it in the Google Home app or on the display itself. Google describes moving to the previous or next photo by touch or voice, and removing or favoriting a displayed photo. Voice interaction depends on whether the Assistant language is supported. See Google Nest Hub Photo Frame setup and controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which is better for your photos?
Choose Chromecast when the TV is the right screen
- You already have a compatible TV and want to reuse it rather than add a separate display.
- You want photos large enough for a shared room.
- You are comfortable setting up ambient mode or starting a cast from your phone.
Choose a Nest Hub when you want an always-available frame
- You want a dedicated screen in a place where a television would be impractical.
- You want to advance, remove, or favorite displayed photos using the screen, and possibly voice controls.
- You value having an interactive smart display as well as a photo frame.
Neither choice guarantees a particular image quality: that depends on the exact TV or display hardware. The practical decision is whether you want to use a TV you already own or have a smaller, separate screen available for photos and interaction.

Check compatibility before setting it up
- Identify the exact product: older Chromecast, Chromecast with Google TV, Google TV Streamer, a Google TV television, Nest Hub, or Nest Hub Max.
- Confirm that Google Photos and photo-frame functionality are available for that device and in your country or region. Google notes that the feature is not available on all devices and in all countries and regions (Google Photos availability details).
- For casting from a phone or tablet, use a compatible Android device and keep it and the Chromecast on the same Wi-Fi network.
- For Nest voice controls, check that the Assistant language in use supports the interaction you want.
