In ChromeOS Canary in April 2021, a developer flag changed Crosh’s presentation: instead of opening in a regular browser tab, it appeared in a standalone system-app window. The report also noted a redesigned icon. It documented a Canary experiment—not a current rollout across all Chromebooks.
What changed in the Canary report
Chrome Unboxed reported on April 14, 2021 that enabling the crosh-swa flag made Crosh open as a system web app (SWA) rather than as an ordinary browser tab. The report said users still opened Crosh with Ctrl+Alt+T; the change was to how the interface was presented, not a documented redesign of Crosh’s command functionality. Chromium’s flag description states: “When enabled, crosh (Chrome OS Shell) will run as a tabbed System Web App rather than a normal browser tab.” Chromium flag descriptions
How the two presentations differ

Chromium’s developer guide distinguishes a System Web App from a System Web Dialog: an SWA has a standalone app presentation, while an SWD is a dialog designed to remain on top and not be resized. What the new icon looked like
The report described the updated Crosh icon as using yellow and red, with a vertical bar replacing the underscore in the earlier design. Its description of the colors is the reporter’s observation, not a technical specification or an objective quality judgment. Chrome Unboxed’s April 2021 report
What this means for Chromebooks today
The report is evidence of what was seen in ChromeOS Canary in April 2021, not proof that the system-app presentation is enabled by default on every Chromebook today. Chromium’s Crosh-related source includes web-app handling, but the available source snapshots do not establish a single current default across stable-channel devices or managed environments.
