If Chrome shows “Your connection is not private” on a client site, don’t enter a password, payment detail, or other sensitive information on that page. The warning means Chrome can’t validate the secure connection as expected; the cause may be the site, your device, or the network. Start with the exact error code, then use the checks below to work out who can fix it. The “2-minute” framing is a quick triage, not a guaranteed completion time.
Start with the error code and device clock
Read the code on the warning page before trying fixes. Chrome lists certificate errors such as NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID, ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID, NET::ERR_CERT_WEAK_SIGNATURE_ALGORITHM, ERR_CERTIFICATE_TRANSPARENCY_REQUIRED, and NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID. The code helps distinguish a device clock problem from a certificate or server configuration issue. Google’s Chrome Help guide explains these errors and the relevant troubleshooting steps.
- If the page says the clock is ahead or behind, or shows
NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID: Check that your device’s date, time, and time zone are correct. Correct them if needed, then reload the client site. - If the code names an authority, certificate name, or weak signature: Continue with the network and browser checks below. The code alone does not establish whether the site, device, or network is responsible.
- If you see
ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH: This points to a TLS or cipher configuration problem on the site, not a reason to weaken Chrome’s protections.
Check whether the network needs a sign-in
On cafe, airport, hotel, or other guest Wi-Fi, a sign-in portal may need to be completed before secure sites load correctly. Open an http:// page in the browser to prompt the network’s login page, complete the sign-in, and retry the client site. If you are not on a network that requires sign-in, move on to the next check.

On a computer, open the same client-site URL in a Chrome Incognito window. If it loads there but not in your regular window, an extension may be interfering. Disable extensions one at a time and retry the page to identify the cause. If the warning also appears in Incognito, that test does not point to an extension as the explanation.

Update the operating system
Chrome includes an up-to-date operating system among its troubleshooting steps for certificate errors. Install available operating-system updates, restart if required, and try the client site again. This is a device-side check; it will not correct a misconfigured certificate on the website’s server.
Test HTTPS scanning only as a temporary diagnostic
Some antivirus products inspect encrypted traffic through a feature labeled “HTTPS protection” or “HTTPS scanning,” and that inspection can trigger a certificate warning. If you suspect this feature, temporarily turn it off only long enough to test the page, then turn it back on. Do not leave protection disabled as a fix. If the warning disappears during the test, contact the antivirus provider or your IT administrator for a safe configuration.

Know when the fix belongs to IT or the site owner
Work device or managed network
On a work computer or managed network, proxy software may inspect HTTPS connections. If Chrome reports NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID, a required proxy certificate may be missing. Contact your IT administrator rather than installing a certificate yourself. Chrome cautions: “It isn’t recommended that you install a certificate on your own, as it’s usually a security risk.”
Problem limited to the client site
If the client site continues to fail after the basic checks—and other sites work—the site owner may need to correct an expired or misconfigured certificate, or server security settings Chrome rejects. Send the owner the exact URL, the time of the failure, your browser, and the displayed error code. Those details help them investigate the certificate or server configuration.

TLS or cipher mismatch
For ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH or a weak-security error, the remedy is on the server, not the visitor’s device. Chrome’s guidance for the cited mismatch is to use TLS 1.3 and TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256, while retaining TLS 1.2 and other ciphers for older clients. A visitor should not change browser security settings to work around a server configuration Chrome rejects.

Quick decision tree
- Clock visibly wrong or date-invalid code: Correct the device date and time, then retry.
- Guest Wi-Fi before sign-in: Open an HTTP page, complete the network portal login, then retry.
- Page works in Incognito: Check extensions in the regular Chrome window.
- Work device or managed proxy: Contact IT; don’t install a certificate independently.
- Only the client site still fails: Send the owner the URL, failure time, browser, and exact code.
