Chrome uses separate settings for its New Tab page, the pages that open when Chrome starts, and the destination of the Home button. On a computer, customize shortcuts from a new tab, set launch behavior under Settings > On startup, and choose the Home button destination under Settings > Appearance. Android has its own homepage and shortcut settings; Chrome for iPhone and iPad does not offer a homepage setting.
How do I customize my Chrome homepage?
First, distinguish the three things people commonly mean by “homepage”:
- New Tab page: the page Chrome displays when you open a new tab. Its shortcuts and appearance are customized on that page.
- Startup page: the page or pages Chrome opens when you launch the browser.
- Homepage: the destination Chrome opens when you select the Home button.
Google Chrome Help notes that the homepage and startup page “aren’t the same unless you set them to be.” Google’s computer instructions cover the startup and Home button settings.
How do I add or remove shortcuts on Chrome’s New Tab page?
On a computer
- Open a new tab in Chrome.
- Select Customize Chrome.
- In Shortcuts, choose My shortcuts to manage shortcuts yourself, or Most visited sites to have Chrome show frequently visited sites. Select the option to turn off Show shortcuts if you want none displayed.
- To change one shortcut, use its menu to edit or remove it.
Google says this New Tab customization requires signing in to a Google Account and using Google as the default search engine; availability can depend on the search engine. On Android
Chrome for Android has New Tab page controls for shortcuts and cards. You can add, pin, edit, rearrange, and remove custom shortcuts. Google says custom shortcuts do not sync to other devices. The available controls are described in Google’s Android New Tab guide.
How do I change Chrome’s startup page?
On a computer, open Chrome menu > Settings > On startup. Choose the behavior that suits what you want to see when Chrome launches:

How do I show the Home button in Chrome?
On a computer, go to Chrome menu > Settings > Appearance and switch on Show Home button. Then choose its destination: the New Tab page or a custom page. This choice affects the Home button, not necessarily the page Chrome opens at startup.

How do I set a Chrome homepage on Android?
In Chrome for Android, open Chrome menu > Settings > Advanced > Homepage. Turn on the homepage setting if needed, then choose Chrome’s homepage or enter a custom page. Android’s homepage setting is separate from its New Tab shortcuts and cards.

Why can’t I change Chrome’s homepage or startup page?
- Work- or school-managed Chromebook: an administrator may control startup and homepage pages, preventing you from changing them yourself.
- Settings changed unexpectedly: Google says an unexpected homepage, startup page, or search engine change may indicate unwanted software. Follow Google’s guidance to reset Chrome settings through its homepage and startup help page.
