If Chrome Headless cuts off the right edge, first check that the requested viewport is wide enough, then inspect any screenshot clip rectangle. In Puppeteer or Playwright, also distinguish a viewport screenshot from a full-page capture and compare CSS-pixel dimensions with the output image’s pixel dimensions. Those checks narrow down the cause; without your command, page, and browser versions, no single cause can be assumed.

1. Check the requested width and capture bounds

Chrome command line

Set the window dimensions explicitly with --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT. Chrome’s documented headless example uses an explicit size alongside --screenshot: Chrome Headless command-line reference.

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,1000 https://example.com

Replace 1440,1000 with the CSS viewport width and height you intend to capture, and replace the URL with your page. If the intended layout is wider than the configured viewport, a viewport screenshot will not show the entire horizontal layout.

Puppeteer and Playwright

Inspect the configured viewport and any clip passed to the screenshot call. A clip captures a rectangle defined by its x, y, width, and height; if x + width does not reach the intended right boundary, the result is clipped regardless of the page’s full width. See the Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions reference and Playwright screenshot parameters.

2. Decide whether you need a viewport or full-page capture

A standard screenshot captures the visible viewport. In Puppeteer, fullPage defaults to false; set it to true when you want the full page. Playwright describes fullPage: true as capturing the full scrollable page instead of only the visible viewport. Full-page capture concerns the page’s scrollable extent; check horizontal width and clipping separately.

Puppeteer’s captureBeyondViewport controls whether a screenshot can capture beyond the viewport. Its default depends on whether a clip is supplied: false without a clip, true with one. If your clip reaches outside the viewport, inspect this option as well.

3. Compare CSS pixels with output image pixels

The configured viewport is generally described in CSS pixels, while the saved image has pixel dimensions. Playwright’s screenshot scale option distinguishes css (one image pixel per CSS pixel) from device (device-pixel resolution, which can produce a larger image on high-DPI displays). A larger or differently sized output image is not, by itself, proof that the right side was cropped. Compare the saved image dimensions with the viewport and scale setting.

4. Check horizontal overflow and browser versions

  1. Capture the page without a clip, using a known viewport size.
  2. Check whether the page’s rendered content extends horizontally beyond that viewport; compare its scrollable width with the intended layout width.
  3. If the viewport and clip cover the intended range, reproduce with the same Chrome or Chromium and automation-library versions. Note whether the issue started after an upgrade.
  4. Record the exact browser and library versions, launch arguments, viewport, device scale factor, screenshot options, output dimensions, and measured page scroll width before changing multiple settings.

A Puppeteer issue opened December 12, 2023 describes a particular interaction involving captureBeyondViewport, deviceScaleFactor, and Chromium compatibility. It is a reason to check versions when the symptom is version-specific, not evidence that this explains every crop.

5. ScreenshotNeo: capture without managing a browser

For a recurring capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. Its API takes a URL in one GET request; it can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. The call below requests a WebP image; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

6. Common causes and fixes

Symptom or check Likely explanation What to do
Right edge is missing in a Chrome CLI screenshot The requested window width is narrower than the intended viewport. Set an explicit, sufficiently wide --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT.
Only a selected region is missing its rightmost content The clip’s horizontal interval ends too early. Check x and width; ensure their sum reaches the intended right boundary.
Screenshot shows only what was visible on screen The capture is a viewport screenshot rather than a full-page screenshot. Use fullPage: true if the goal is the full scrollable page, then verify horizontal bounds separately.
Saved image dimensions seem unexpectedly large The screenshot may use device-pixel scale instead of CSS-pixel scale. Compare the scale option, viewport dimensions, and output image dimensions before diagnosing a crop.
The issue appeared after changing browser or library versions A version-specific capture behavior may be involved. Reproduce using the exact versions and options; inspect the Puppeteer issue report as a lead, not a universal explanation.

7. What to include in a bug report

  • Exact Chrome or Chromium version and Puppeteer or Playwright version.
  • Launch arguments and configured viewport width and height.
  • deviceScaleFactor and screenshot options, including clip, fullPage, and captureBeyondViewport.
  • Output image dimensions and the page’s measured scroll width.
  • The URL or a minimal reproducible page, if it can be shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does `fullPage: true` make a screenshot wider?

It requests the full scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport. Check horizontal dimensions and any clip independently.

Why is my screenshot wider in pixels than the viewport setting?

A device-pixel screenshot scale can produce more image pixels than CSS viewport pixels, particularly on high-DPI displays.
