Yes, the reports are based on real development—but regular Chrome for Android still does not offer a general Chrome Web Store extension experience. Chromium source changes from 2024 through April 2026 show Google enabling and testing extension infrastructure in an experimental Desktop Android configuration. That is evidence of technical work, not a consumer launch announcement or a promised release date.

What the Chromium code actually shows

The evidence is a series of Chromium engineering changes, rather than a hidden setting documented for the Play Store app. In September 2024, Google described experimenting with desktop-Android configurations for Chrome and said the general extension API system was functional there. That work covered renderer bindings, injected extension JavaScript, argument serialization, browser-side API handling and extension URL handling. Chromium change, September 4, 2024

A separate September 2024 change enabled extension unit-test work and referenced Android desktop ARM64 and x64 compile bots. It also noted that browser tests were not yet supported in Desktop Android builds at that stage. Chromium test change, September 11, 2024

The work continued in March and April 2026. Commits refer explicitly to “extensions on desktop Android” and use ENABLE_EXTENSIONS_CORE for extension-platform behavior. Other changes add or adapt metrics, permissions, enterprise policy, chooser behavior, password-manager integration, activity-data cleanup and performance-manager support:

Together, these changes indicate a substantial platform effort. They still do not prove that Google has enabled extensions in the ordinary Android phone application.

Does Chrome for Android support extensions today?

Environment What is established
Regular Chrome for Android No verified, general-purpose Chrome Web Store extension experience for normal phone users.
Experimental Desktop Android Chromium/Chrome builds Extension-related runtime and browser infrastructure exists in development configurations.
Other Android browsers Some provide extension support through their own implementations or Chromium forks; they are not the regular Chrome app.

Do not assume that a Chromium flag or command-line switch can safely activate the feature in the Play Store build. The available evidence does not establish a reliable consumer activation path.

What “Desktop Android” means

Desktop Android is the name used for an Android configuration intended to provide a more desktop-style Chrome environment. It remains Android underneath, but it is not necessarily the same product configuration as phone-oriented Chrome. The term could become relevant to large screens, desktop-mode sessions or experimental builds, yet no cited source defines it as a specific tablet, foldable or phone feature.

This separation gives Chromium somewhere to solve extension-runtime, permissions, policy, user-interface and compatibility problems before deciding whether to ship a broader Android product. It also explains why source support can exist without an Extensions menu appearing on your handset.

What is still missing before a public launch?

A real consumer feature would need more than build support. Watch for these signals:

  • A user-facing extensions management page or menu.
  • A documented installation and distribution path, including a clear Chrome Web Store experience.
  • Stable permission and site-access controls, updates and rollback behavior.
  • Published Android compatibility limits and documentation.
  • Support guidance for crashes, battery impact, abuse and privacy complaints.
  • A Chrome release-note or Google announcement naming supported devices and versions.

Google’s public Chrome Android release page says Chrome 151 was being rolled out in July 2026, but that note described stability and performance work rather than general extension support. Chrome Releases, 2026 No verified public launch date has been announced.

Would every Chrome extension work?

No. Extension support means that a browser can run some extension APIs; it does not guarantee desktop parity.

Desktop-only assumptions

Extensions may depend on desktop windows, menus, downloads, file-system access, native messaging, USB, printing or protocol handlers. A phone-sized interface can also make a desktop extension unusable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android lifecycle and permissions

Android manages background processes and battery more aggressively than desktop operating systems. Extensions would need rules for background execution, memory pressure, permissions and site access that may differ from desktop Chrome.

Manifest platform limits

Google is phasing out Manifest V2 and moving Chrome toward Manifest V3, citing security, privacy, performance and trust goals. Google’s Manifest V2 phase-out announcement Chrome Enterprise documentation says Chrome 138 was the final version supporting the ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy. Chrome Enterprise policy documentation Any future Android implementation would most likely follow the current platform rather than preserve every older Manifest V2 behavior.

What this means for ad blockers

“Extensions on Android” would not automatically mean that every powerful desktop ad blocker works unchanged. Compatibility would depend on the APIs Google exposes, the filtering model, permissions and the extension’s manifest version. In particular, do not equate a future Android extension menu with guaranteed support for a desktop Manifest V2 implementation such as the traditional uBlock Origin architecture. Manifest V3 changes how request filtering and other capabilities are implemented; it does not justify the blanket claim that all ad blocking is impossible.

  • Mobile screens leave less room for extension controls and configuration.
  • Android’s battery and background-process rules complicate persistent extension work.
  • Desktop APIs for windows, downloads, files and native integrations do not map cleanly to phones.
  • Google would need installation, update, abuse-prevention, permission and support systems designed for mobile.
  • Page-modifying extensions introduce security, privacy and stability risks.

Commercial tension around advertising is a plausible analysis, but it should not be presented as Google’s stated reason for the missing feature.

Could support be limited to tablets or desktop mode?

Yes, that is one plausible product shape, but it is not confirmed. Google could:

  1. Launch extensions first in a desktop-style Android environment.
  2. Limit them to tablets, foldables, external displays or desktop-mode sessions.
  3. Adapt a reduced extension model for phones later.
  4. Keep the project experimental without shipping it in stable Chrome.

The source evidence establishes the Desktop Android target, not which hardware Google may eventually support.

What Android users can do now

If extensions are essential today, use an Android browser that explicitly documents extension support. Chromium-based alternatives may provide it through their own forks or implementations, but check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The official publisher, update history and privacy policy.
  • The browser’s requested permissions and the permissions of each extension.
  • Whether the browser supports the extensions and manifest versions you need.
  • How its synchronization, Safe Browsing configuration, telemetry and update process differ from Chrome.

Avoid modified APKs and unofficial browser builds unless you understand their security and update risks. You can keep Chrome for sites, account sync or compatibility and use another reputable browser for extension-dependent tasks.

Bottom line

Chrome for Android extension support is no longer purely hypothetical. Chromium’s Desktop Android work shows Google is making the extension platform technically viable in an Android-based desktop configuration. But the normal Android Chrome app still has no verified general extension rollout, no announced launch date and no promise of full desktop compatibility. Treat the commits as development progress—not a feature you can turn on today.
