Short answer: there is no reliable, universal Chrome flag that makes every computer faster. Chrome flags are temporary experiments that can change, break, or disappear without notice. Start with Chrome’s supported Performance settings and ordinary troubleshooting; test a flag only for a documented, device-specific reason, one at a time, with a rollback plan.
Why a “faster flags” list is unreliable
Chrome flags are internal, experimental controls. Google warns that they can change, break, or be removed without notice, and that changing them can risk browser data, security, and privacy. Most users should not need to modify them.
A flag that helps one Chrome release, operating system, processor, or workload can do nothing—or cause crashes, graphical problems, battery drain, or lost work—on another. The official Chrome guidance does not provide a current, cross-platform catalog of flags proven to improve stable-channel speed. Treat any online list of “best flags” as version-specific advice that must be checked against the description shown in your own browser.
Use this order instead: fix common causes, select a supported Performance setting for your goal, then test one narrowly documented flag if you still have a reproducible problem.

Use Chrome’s supported performance controls first
On desktop, open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Settings, then Performance. These controls are maintained features, so their behavior and trade-offs are clearer than experimental flags. Google says the personalization options described here cannot be customized on Android or iOS; mobile Chrome therefore should not be assumed to expose the same settings.
Memory Saver: recover RAM from inactive tabs
Memory Saver deactivates tabs you are not currently using so other tabs and applications have more memory. When you return, Chrome reloads the tab. Google describes three levels:

Chrome may keep a tab active when it is playing media, handling a call, sharing your screen, downloading, holding a partially completed form, pinned, or connected to a device. Those exceptions mean Memory Saver is not a substitute for closing a runaway page.
Energy Saver: trade background work for battery
Energy Saver reduces image capture rate and other background tasks when the device is unplugged or its battery is low. It is available on Windows, Mac, and battery-equipped Chromebooks. The trade-off is visible smoothness: Google notes that gaming and video performance can change. It is a battery-life setting, not a guaranteed speed boost, so disable or adjust it when animation, scrolling, or playback becomes less smooth.

Preload Pages: make likely navigation feel faster
Chrome can preload pages you are likely to visit, reducing wait time when you follow a link or search result. The choices are Standard and Extended. Preloading consumes network and storage resources, and Google notes that it can use cookies and may encrypt and send pages through Google to hide your identity from sites. Choose Standard when you want a conservative balance; choose Extended only when quicker repeat navigation is worth the additional data and privacy implications.
Diagnose the real bottleneck before touching a flag
- Update Chrome. Google says Chrome works best on the latest version. Install the offered update and relaunch before judging performance.
- Close unused tabs. A large tab set can consume memory even when you are not looking at it. Save anything important before closing.
- Disable or remove unnecessary extensions. Open the extensions menu, select Manage extensions, and switch off add-ons you do not need. Remove ones you no longer trust or recognize.
- Inspect Chrome Task Manager. Press Shift+Esc in Chrome, sort by the Memory footprint column, and identify tabs, extensions, or background pages using unusual resources. Select a task and choose End process only after saving work; ending it can discard unsaved form data.
- Review Performance settings. Use Memory Saver for RAM pressure, Energy Saver for battery life, and Preload Pages for faster likely navigation. Test one change during the same workload so you can tell what helped.
- Only then investigate a flag. You should have a specific symptom and a reason the flag’s current description addresses it—not simply a promise from a copied “top flags” list.
How to test a Chrome flag safely
- Type
chrome://flagsin the address bar. - Search for the exact flag name and read its full description, including platform and security notes. If the flag is absent, do not substitute a similarly named setting.
- Record the original value and your Chrome version. Change one flag only.
- Click Relaunch when Chrome requests it. Save work in every tab first.
- Repeat the same workload—such as the same set of sites or web application—for long enough to notice responsiveness, memory use, graphics behavior, and battery impact.
- Keep the change only if it solves your specific problem without introducing errors. Do not assume a subjective feeling is a measured speed gain.
- If Chrome behaves badly, return to
chrome://flags, choose Reset all, and relaunch. Google also recommends Chrome Beta for trying experimental features before they reach the stable browser and for sending feedback.
Never change several flags together: if startup fails or a site breaks, you will not know which setting caused it. Avoid experimenting on a browser profile that contains irreplaceable sessions or unsaved work.
The documented Hyper-Threading flag is narrowly scoped
Google’s Chromebook Help documents Scheduler Configuration, available at chrome://flags#scheduler-configuration, for Hyper-Threading on relevant Chromebook processors running ChromeOS 74 or later. It is not a general desktop-Chrome speed switch, and every current Chromebook is not guaranteed to expose it.
Hyper-Threading is off by default because Google warns that enabling it may pose a security risk. Google also says some users may notice slower performance in certain applications and games when it is disabled. That documentation is not evidence that enabling the option improves Chrome generally. Consider it only when your Chromebook, processor, ChromeOS version, and security requirements match the documented scope; otherwise leave the default unchanged.

What to do when a flag makes Chrome slower or unstable
Chrome crashes, hangs, or will not start normally
Reopen chrome://flags and select Reset all, then relaunch. If the browser cannot stay open, use Chrome’s recovery or profile troubleshooting steps rather than repeatedly changing unrelated flags. Re-enable extensions only after Chrome is stable.
A page displays incorrectly or video becomes choppy
Reset the last flag you changed, then test with extensions disabled. Energy Saver can reduce image capture rate and background activity, so check that setting when the problem occurs on battery. Hardware-accelerated graphics problems should be diagnosed separately; do not assume a random rendering flag is a fix.
Tabs keep reloading
Check the Memory Saver level. Higher savings deactivate tabs sooner, and returning to one reloads it. Lower the level or add an exception for a site that must retain state, while recognizing that pages with forms, calls, downloads, media, pinned tabs, or device connections may already be protected from deactivation.
Browsing feels slower after enabling preloading
Preloading trades network and privacy costs for faster likely navigation. Switch from Extended to Standard, or turn preloading off, then compare the same connection and sites. A congested connection can make extra speculative requests counterproductive.

A flag disappeared after an update
This is expected behavior for experimental controls. Flags may be renamed, removed, or limited to a different platform without notice. Do not search for an unofficial replacement unless its current description and risks are clear; use supported Performance settings instead.

Chrome flags are not a dependable speed-tuning checklist. Update Chrome, reduce tab and extension load, inspect Task Manager, and select Memory Saver, Energy Saver, or Preload Pages according to your actual goal. If you test an experimental flag, verify its scope, change one setting, measure the same workload, and use Reset all to undo it. The Hyper-Threading setting is a Chromebook-specific, security-sensitive exception—not a universal Chrome optimization.
