Use Chrome DevTools for a quick, manual capture while inspecting a page; use Playwright when screenshots need to be scripted, targeted, repeated, or checked against visual baselines. They can capture similar page states, but they serve different workflows. For comparable images, align the browser, viewport, scale, page state, and execution environment.
How Chrome DevTools and Playwright screenshots differ

This compares the documented workflows, not every screenshot capability either product may have. Chrome DevTools Protocol, a lower-level interface, includes additional capture controls.
Capture a screenshot manually with Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode if you need a simulated viewport. Set the viewport and other relevant device settings.
- Open More options in the Device Mode toolbar.
- Choose Capture screenshot for the currently visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page, including content beyond the viewport.
- If you want a device frame in the capture, enable Show device frame before capturing in a device-specific mode.
Device Mode also groups viewport simulation with options such as CPU and network throttling and sensor emulation. Its mobile rendering is not a substitute for testing on a physical handset: Chrome describes it as a “first-order approximation” and explains that the code is simulated from a desktop or laptop rather than run on a mobile device. Capture a screenshot with Playwright
Install Playwright and its browser binaries using the setup instructions for your chosen language. The following JavaScript example uses Playwright’s library API and saves a full-page PNG:

Useful screenshot options
Playwright’s Page screenshot API documents options that are useful for testing or downstream processing:

Choose the right workflow
Choose DevTools for an immediate inspection capture
DevTools is a good fit when you are already inspecting a page and want a fast record of the visible state or the full page without writing code. Its documented Device Mode screenshot controls are straightforward, but the capture is a manual action rather than a reusable step in an automation script.

Choose Playwright for repeatable or targeted captures
Use Playwright when captures belong in browser automation, when you need a particular element or clipped region, when you need image bytes for a pipeline, or when you want automated visual comparisons. Playwright Test supports screenshot baselines; its visual comparisons guide explains how to create and compare them.
For matching results, control the environment
Two screenshots of the same URL are not necessarily pixel-identical. Align the browser engine and version, viewport dimensions, device pixel ratio or screenshot scale, page state, and execution environment. For visual tests, keep the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power conditions, and headless mode consistent as well. Playwright warns that these conditions can affect rendering and advises running comparisons in the same environment as the baseline.

Mobile screenshots: simulation versus a real device
Chrome Device Mode simulates mobile behavior on a desktop or laptop. It exposes viewport and device-frame controls, but it does not run the page on the simulated physical phone. Use it for an approximation during development; if the result must represent a particular handset’s actual behavior, test on that physical device. Playwright can configure browser context and screenshot dimensions, but a configured viewport is likewise not proof of output from a physical handset.

Troubleshooting screenshot differences
- The Playwright image only shows the viewport: Set
fullPage: trueif you need the whole page. Full-page capture is not the default. - The output dimensions differ: Check viewport dimensions and
scale. Device scale can create a larger image than CSS scale on a high-DPI configuration. - A component is missing or incomplete: Make sure the page has reached the state you intend to capture. Wait for a meaningful selector or other application-specific condition when a generic load event is insufficient.
- Visual tests fail across machines: Compare browser version, OS, headless mode, settings, hardware, and page state. Run the baseline and comparison in the same environment where possible.
- A mobile capture does not match a phone: Device Mode is a simulation. Confirm behavior on the physical device when handset-specific rendering matters.
