Chrome can automatically remove a website’s permission to send notifications when the site has very low user engagement and sends a high volume of notifications. Google announced the feature on October 10, 2025, for Chrome on Android and desktop. It excludes installed web apps, and users can review or restore removed permissions—or turn off automatic removal.
What Chrome’s automatic notification removal does
The feature revokes a website’s notification permission; it does not uninstall Chrome or disable every notification on your device. Google says it applies to websites, not installed web apps. Chrome notifies users when it removes a permission. You can then restore access through Safety Check or by revisiting the site and allowing notifications again. Google also says users can turn off auto-revocation.
Google describes the trigger as a combination of very low user engagement and a high volume of notifications. Its October 10, 2025 announcement does not define a fixed inactivity period, a numeric notification-volume threshold, or an engagement cutoff. It also does not provide a Chrome version number or rollout schedule, so availability may vary.
How to review or change notification permissions
On desktop Chrome
- To manage site permissions, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications. Add a site to the allowed or blocked list as needed.
- To review permissions removed from unused sites, open Settings > Privacy and security, then select Go to Safety Check in the Safety Check section. Look for a Safety recommendations entry such as “Permissions removed for [n] sites.”
- To restore a particular site’s permission, use Safety Check or visit the site and allow notifications again.
On Android Chrome
Google’s August 11, 2026 security article documents the route as More (⋮) > Settings > Notifications. Automatically revoked permissions can be reviewed and regranted in Safety Hub. Labels and paths can differ between Chrome builds, so follow the wording shown on your device.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How this fits with Chrome’s other notification protections
Automatic removal for low-engagement sites is one measure, not a guarantee that every unwanted or deceptive notification will be caught. Google describes several separate protections:
- Repeated suspicious-notification warnings: Chrome can revoke permission from sites that have repeatedly received such warnings. Users can review and regrant automatically revoked permissions in Safety Hub.
- Abuse-network detection and throttling: Google says it looks for coordinated abusive behavior using signals such as service-worker activity. For the Firebase Cloud Messaging Push API, Google describes a server-side limit of 1,000 messages per minute for disruptive domains, with HTTP 429 responses above that threshold. The limit can scale with repeat offenses and resets after a period of non-disruptive behavior; it is not a setting users control in Chrome.
- Android notification warnings: Google says an on-device machine-learning model can analyze notification text for potentially deceptive or spammy content, without sending notification contents to Google for this analysis.
- One-tap unsubscribe: Google has also described tools that let users unsubscribe from notifications. In September 2024, it reported a 30 percent reduction in notification volume on supported Pixel devices from that earlier feature; that figure is not a result of automatic permission removal.
What Google has reported about the feature
Google’s October 10, 2025 announcement said that less than 1% of all notifications receive any user interaction; it did not specify the measurement period. Google also reported that its testing of automatic permission removal produced a “significant reduction” in notification overload with “only a minimal change” in total notification clicks, and that lower-volume sites saw increased clicks. The post did not publish effect sizes, sample size, or experiment dates.
